I think what hit me the hardest was that by the end of the war Paul was no more than 18 if even. I think the horrors for the men who served was not what happened during but what happened after. How could anyone return to a civilised society after enduring this kind of trauma. It saddens me greatly that some of the current generation of young people can't even tell you what years the great war took place.

In the book, there's a passage where Paul returns home for vacation and it talks about how he perceives everything that used to be normal to him. Like how he now fears to be smelling gas or flinched when a loud sound occurs. Or how the local generals lecture him about war, even though they know nothing of what is really going on in the fields. The book has a lot of interesting writing styles and description of what the soldiers think and see, with a difference between their young academic spirits and their broken minds of war and cruelty

1:04 That leafless tree scene made me think when I saw the movie. I thought "that scene is too big just for some trees, it must have been just to set the mood". I started reading The Guns of August because of this movie (the book that portrays the first world war very well) and there is a chapter called "At home before the leaves fall" that reminded me of this scene. Briefly, the Germans were so confident they would win the war that they thought it would only last 4 months at most. When the Kaiser declared the troops departing the first week of August for Belgium, he told the soldiers "You will be home before the leaves fall from the trees" (we all know what happened next). I don't know if that was the intention of this scene but it made me reflect on it (I used google translator to write this text, I know English but I was too lazy, so...)

the movie did a very great job at potraying the soldier's life realistically, there's no 'hero' or 'villain' it's just young men trying to survive, we can see this in the intro when our 1st main character got introduced, then died when he charges towards no man's land, then we got explained the life of the soldier represented by paul baummer, and then paul died to repeat the cycle when we see our new main character looking at paul's dead body, it's to tell the story that even if you have so many experience, friends, loved ones in the end you're just another body

This is one of the few edits I've seen that doesn't try to glorify the warfare. Especially that first jump cut, it epitomizes everything this movie was trying to achieve. It didn't show the life at home, how the troopers felt at "home" seeing the now unfamiliar faces, then coming back to the trenches once again to annihilate one another, the books depitcs that very well. On top of that the continuation book "The Road Back" decipts the War's end, what a torture of a life began back at home for everyone.

Still can't get over how amazing this movie is
Although dramatized and embellished for the sake of the message, this movie might be the closest depiction of war in film I have seen in a while.
“War is just old men arguing and young men dying.”
(Spoiler alert) the sad thing about this movie is, just before the war started the main character had a lot of friends and a perfect life. His friends went to sign up and also he did. But by the end all his previous friends had died and the friends he made on the way also died. The absolute thing that got me crying was at the end when he literally got stabbed 2 seconds before the armistice. This war was truly horrid and could’ve been prevented. This movie depicted it very well.

@@idkanymorelol46The extent of the war was avoidable. The issue is large alliances. It drew so many countries into what could’ve been just a regional conflict within the Austro-Hungarian empire’s sphere of influence. It’s why pacts like NATO are so risky, especially when they’re indefinite in length.
The first 20 seconds of this video incapsulate, in my opinion, the greatest transition to have ever been created in any type of moving imagery.
This video, AND this movie, are pure art.
I love the way the directors potrayed the horrors of war using color, from what i can tell they colors were disappearing as the boys journey progresses (although i havnt watched the full movie so feel free to correct me). Amazing use of symbolism to illustrate the horrors of war.

Out of all the WW1 movies I have watched so far, this one hits the hardest. Emotionally. Aside from example, saving private ryan or fury, this one actually made me tear up and gave me a important message. We should never forgot those who fought to save the future. . . and that future is us. Most forget them, or some forget to tell their children that these brave men fought for us to have freedom. Best edit for the movie and great song choice👍 keeps me coming back!
Literally just finished watching this. Brutal and sad but good movie
Oscars 2023 just announced pretty much good results snubbed the batman but well things happen. Congratulations to Everything Everywhere all at Once for the Best Picture award. At the End I would say. Naatu Naatu 🕺🏻🕺🏻 sweep
This movie had me at the edge of my seat from beginning to end, truly a tragic and good movie. And your edit is just a masterpiece 👍
Your edit is by far the best one I've seen it goes very well with the music thank you for this masterpiece.
The thing that terrifies me isn't the images from the war. I expected those. The thing that terrified me is the beginning. They knew exactly where they were going and what the would do/go through yet they were so brainwashed and made to believe that they were going to some kinda kids game...
Such an incredible edit. In particular, that transition from him cheering the war to the first shot of him IN the war is very effective and genius. I don't know what it is about the slowed version of this song. But it is so good to show sadness and terror, and isolation. Please do an edit of "The King" with Timothee Chalamet. Use this same song also
I’ve watched this for hours
ive watched it thousands times, thank u
Great movie. No silly moment. No jokes. Just the reality.
This movie really deserved an edit, it's a masterpiece
The best edit I've ever seen in my entire life. Great work
