I think we can all see this coming. With unbridled lawlessness, businesses will leave and the city will spiral into an even deeper economic hellhole. Ten years ago, these didn't happen. While there is the occasional shoplifting, it's nothing compared to the "raids" we see these days. Add to this police inaction and/or ineffective legal action, businesses no longer have confidence to invest and do business in that city. With them closing, thousands of jobs will go. And with this, more bankruptcies, social problems and homelessness.

But I was let go, because the other stores complained that their shoplifting increased by me staying in one store. The other stores forced my store to let me go because of their greatly increased shoplifting, thus things went back to normal and my store started getting shoplifting back, good luck.

In 2005 the unincorporated area of Cedar Mill in Oregon was successful in keeping Walmart out of our neighborhood. We lobbied we fought and ultimately won against the giant. Walmart stores are against our beliefs in what a good steward of a community should be. Their wages and benefits are below the industry standards. The goods they sell are mostly of inferior quality. The customers they attract to their stores tend to face challenges in life that can affect the surrounding communities negatively. Walmart has a place in small towns with limited resources not in the higher end neighborhoods that don’t shop there. Why would anyone from Oregon shop at a Walmart when we have Fred Meyer. They have quality goods at fair prices and have been a steward in our community for over 100 years. Walmart doesn’t belong in every state and they are slowly learning this. Businesses need to realize their business practices don’t work in every community.

The people who actually bought things were too scared to shop there. So they closed. Next thing you know we have those people at our nice mall. Then the shootings and shoplifting started. People quit going and now most of the stores have left. Because again, the people who actually shop are too scared to go.

But when it's executives and lawyers in suits literally stealing over $320 Million in wages, this is seen as a normal way to break down communities... Perhaps businesses should actually have employees do the checking out of customers goods. Perhaps businesses should have loss prevention departments that have employees. Perhaps businesses should not run on skeleton crews. Perhaps you should stop spreading lies. There is a cop for every 1000 citizens in Portland. There is only so much you can do, unless of course you want to live in a police state, and pay double your taxes? Then, you can stamp out theft.

Here we have another guy in the comments who thinks he knows all about running a business, when likely his only experience with economics is buying and selling at auction houses in MMORPGs. All of these things are the consequence of policies that encourage shoplifting, discourage police from doing anything, have little money or ability to hire more workers, and realize that it makes more sense to just close than try to invest millions to fight against a system rigged against their succeeding. I'd explain it more, but I have the feeling I probably wasted my time and breath already.

Santa Ana Luna - liberals don't think that far ahead. Just dig at them by suggesting that people complain about shoplifting only because they're biased against people of color, and the liberal will say "f--- yeah!" Maybe their brain can't function well enough because their mask is keeping enough oxygen from getting up there. Portland is proudly Progressive, and valuable community stores being shoplifted out of business is the result. I hope the residents like the result.

I used to live in Portland and they're doing this to themselves. Being light on crime such as shop lifting, Walmart has to do something when their locations are not making profit enough to afford the ability to stay. Portland is starting to decay and it shows. The only way to change this all around for them is get tougher on crime and elect city leaders who are willing to do the same.

Walgreens actually reported that shoplifting is now back to reasonable levels and that they overreacted last year to the increase in shoplifting. Walmart’s problem might be that poor people who are suffering from inflation are shopping in dollar stores instead of Walmart. Walmart has spoken about the problem of theft in their stores for a while, and local politicians seem unwilling to directly address the issue. Target Chief Financial Officer Michael Fiddelke said shoplifting has jumped about 50% year over and year in 2022, leading to more than $400 million in losses for Target in 2022 fiscal year alone. Walmart CEO Doug McMillon said this about criminal trends “If that’s not corrected over time, prices will be higher, and/or stores will close.” This is a moment of celebration for all those people who insisted Walmart was bad for their communities. Now the gap in food availability can be filled by all those "mom and pop" businesses that can't wait to get all those shoplifters diverted to their small stores.
