My mother worked for Atari in Sunnyvale Ca. I had THE BEST childhood ever . I had every single game plus hundreds that were never released . I loved going to work with her and staying in the arcade rooms all day long at the headquarters. This video was so nostalgic for me . Thank you !

Sigh. What happy memories! I played about half of these. My two favorites were "Star Raiders" and "The Dreadnaught Factor." I actually built my own controller so my best friend and I could play "Star Raiders" simultaneously (one player controlled the ship, the other fired the weapons). Incredible programming. My thanks to all these game designers for making my childhood so happy. :)

The Colecovision was fairly successful for the time, the 5200 wasn't mostly due to it's design and the awful controller

  • @datacipher

This is simply untrue. The CV was successful and came out first. As it was dying down - mainly due to lackluster and few releases later, the 5200 which had started slowly due to lackluster initial lineup was coming into its own with the 2nd and 3rd batch of releases. Outstanding ports like dig dug, joust, ms pac, kangaroo, moon patrol, robot Ron, etc. sadly tempest, jr pac, super pac, and others were virtually complete before cancellation. At the time however the 5200 was already reported by retailers to now be outselling the coleco and coming to the forefront - as reported by the premiere mag at the time EG. The myth about the “hated” controls is a modern day creation. They were subpar… though good gamers simply adjusted… and at that point we also didn’t know how fragile they were. Don’t believe what millennial or gen z people tell you… bc they heard it from another millennial lol.

All of these games in this video are games I'd like to try. The Atari 5200 is a misunderstood console. It gets a bad rep because of the controller. But today the controller is not really an issue. Today you can get refurbished controllers with better parts, or you can fix it yourself. You can also get an adapter to use a sega genesis controller.

@@quirkythestarling5749 That's not Asteroids! I owned a 5200. I also owned Asteroids. Owned it on all 3 systems. Asteroids was an Atari original arcade game. There would have been no need for an alternate title. Notice they didn't bastardize Missile Command, Defender, or Pole Position - all Atari original arcade games.

It's a shame this console flopped as hard as it did. It's a cool idea (heck they just added another 2600 to the original 2600 for crying out loud), but the execution was INCREDIBLY poor. The controller is a mess, the extra adapter is weird, and it could've REALLY used some more support games-wise. But, for some reason, I can't help but wonder what it would have turned out like if those problems were never there and the system became successful. Maybe Atari would still be around today and be an honest rival to Nintendo. I dunno, fun thought.

Stayed for the games, hated the background music. My impression: many of the 5200 games are marginally better than the 2600 versions. There are some however, like Zaxxon that are major improvements. Interesting that Activision titles are almost identical. This is why I favor the 7800. You get some huge improvements on games like Dig Dug and Donkey Kong and the entire 2600 library.

Just go to an art gallery and satisfy yourself there please. Don't force anyone to be exposed to your urges while we're only here for totally something else. OK? please be considerate. By the way, this whole unnecessary production makes me feel very depressed. After watching this, this video killed any possible minuscule chance of being further interested in this console and yes it's due to this fucking disturbing, depressing, irritating and unnecessary production with this shit music.
