I’ve had my 5.1 for 7 years now and I can safely say (even if I had the money) I wouldn’t be buying this. I’m with you, this has made mine a very much sought after Van. Thanks VW for well and truly cocking this up. The beauty of the previous model was the fact it was based on a commercial vehicle, that’s what made them special. The white collars in Wolfsburg have a missed a trick and are obviously detached from the VW cult following. Clueless

I expected a lot from the final version, but I was disappointed. I see that VW has simply gone backwards in several solutions: - The table hides behind the mattress, which takes up luggage space. Why couldn't they keep the existing side door solution? - Detachable seat headrests, in the T6.1 they are simply hidden and this solution is easy to use and very practical. - No blinds on the front window of the car. The curtains take up the luggage space and, to be honest, I thought that this version would finally have blinds on the driver's and passenger's side doors too. - Only one gas burner in the stove, one too few. In the concept version, the solution with two different power sources was really interesting. - Narrower lower bed, it was 114x195 cm and now it is 106x198 cm. That is, the bed is as much as 8 cm narrower. - The car itself is also longer - it is 517.3 cm long, while it was 490.4 cm long, which is a total of 27 cm longer. Currently, with the T6.1, when we mount a bike rack on the rear door, it can be difficult to fit into the outline of the parking space. - Side wardrobe opens only on one side, not on both sides and with a mirror as in the T6.1. - Connection for refilling water inside the car. It is more convenient to refill water without opening the rear door. Additionally, the concept had better solutions: - Drawers in the kitchen, which simply had more (cutlery, cups, spices, plates) and opened on both sides. I also don't know why a curtain for the drawers is needed. I think it is unnecessary and this design solution has been present since previous versions of the California. This is where Marco Polo is better thought out. - The power and USB connections located under the stove were more accessible and not hidden at the back, as it is now. - It's also a pity that the idea of a retractable shower hose was not used. Now the Ford Nugget has such a solution, with the option of heating water. - When it comes to the fridge, the idea of it being an openwork drawer is completely illogical. Every time it opens, all the accumulated cold will escape from it. As a result, more energy will be needed to cool the fridge again to the set temperature. - No electric grill or lamp by the side doors. Personally, I still miss: - solar panels on the roof, - a self-folding tent, - factory-installed, sliding mosquito nets on side doors (above solutions can be seen in the new version of Ford Nugget) - Window blinds with material that reflects sunlight, which will additionally reduce the temperature inside the car during hot weather. - AC, so far, no car of this type has introduced parking (with the engine off) air conditioning, which is a pity. - and at least one plastic window in the roof tent, for rainy days. To sum up, although I see the advantages of the new version, there is still a lot to do. And all the VW need to do is just to listen to user opinions.

Totally agree with everything you said. The only thing I wish my T6.1 had is an electronic hand break, and hot water tap ( l'm not sure if the T7 has got it). Otherwise my T6.1 4motion is a keeper, it's an instant classic now! No desire to „upgrade" it from what I see.

AC off...buy the Plugin, which has AC in off Mode like any EV, too. Use this very often in Passat GTE and our Multivan eHybrid.

Totally agreed. I would just add that especially the Beach version is a complete disappointment. It used to be a good choice for someone who needs a practical daily van and also a basic camper. Now it's not a good van, because of the drawer that takes up most of the trunk and the downstairs bed is just horrendous, with the inconvenient folding and middle backrest in the way of legs. So not a good camper either. I am pretty sure this will be a tough sell. Whoever approved that needs to find something else they're good at. Yeah, and I was excited about the plug-in hybrid camper because of the large hybrid battery would be great for camping. But they couldn't make that work either. Because of warranty issues? Oh my. So, waiting for the next gen Nugget.

Not sure if this is the ultimate camper, but it is the ultimate VW review for sure. Thomas should ask VW to pay him as this is better than any of tv ads for this van.

As a person who lives in California, a place this vehicle would be perfect for, it annoys me so much that VW USA refuses to bring these vans to the US market. Not saying it would sell millions here but they’d sell plenty.

What would the "very wealthy" do with such a vehicle , camping at 1 star campground ? Yeah, don't see that happening.

I'm glad to own a T6.1 California Ocean 4Motion!! I wouldn't change for no money (maybe only without kids) Why? - There is way more storage space (under the rear-seats and the kitchen) in the T6.1 - It's much easier and quicker to change for the bed downstears - It's way easier to shade the windows in the T6.1, especially for the front window - We often use both gas-burners. The T7 only has one - There is a inside-table in the T6.1 that is always ready What I don't understand with the new one: - isn't the weight a problem with the hybrid version (if you need 4x4)? - the argument of the high-voltage battery for camping mode doesn't make much sense for me... Maybe just a cost-optimizaton for VW to not add additional control-units (?) For sure the T6.1 has some things that could be better as well. But the T7 is a step back from my point of view!

Previous California Beach had up to 7 seats with downstairs bed and enough space between bed and front seats for toilet and fridge. 🤔 VW is selling a square trying to convince us that this is a better design of a wheel. 😉 Lars Krause: “New California offers more of everything. @@januszzgiet time will tell but the e-golf’s are still working fine after 10 years. Sure there is degradation but still useable. Out of spec bought the cheapest one in the country for 3 grand and it works fine 🤣. That’s not always the case tho. Especially not with other brands…

Top review. The ocean interior a bit disappointing compared to the concept version last year. 6.1 still a very good modern camper.

The Ford F150 and other eclectic vehicles were marketed with the V2L as one of their USP. "Power your home in a blackout" and things like that. So I think the explanation with the warranty is not plausible. More likely the whole hybrid system is not engineered for such applications, or they have to change many parts in order to make it so, which wouldn't be cost effective. Hence 2 more lumps of lead acid batteries.

You should have talk about removing the back seats for more space, (For couple trip or single) space that can be use for an electric bike for exemple or water gears. How back can be put the front sit for a nap ? How large is the table ? How much water do you get ? How do you charge water in and out ? How heavy is the hybrid version ? :)

I don't understand why VW got rid of the the bench seat in the back?? Only 1 burner seems like a mistake.

Fascinating just how good camper vans have become, though at a price certainly for the fully specced Ocean. On deciding whether to get the Beach or the Ocean, it seems to me the key decision is whether you are going to do much cooking or DIY food. If you are going to eat out you might as well get the Beach for the extra interior space and price saving. I think my camping days are over so I would probably spend the €100k on something else.

if you never heve been in a camper before: they are indeed clever design solutions. but they just done work when camping.

On the Beach version the rear central seat is a BIG mistake, it should fold like the two others, without the need to turn it backwards to set up the bed.

I would definitely love to rent such car for a trip to a countryside. Thanks, Thomas )

No fold out table and no rear bench seat these for me are major compromises very narrow seating sadly vw have lost their way on these things very nice camper but flexibility and design were always first as a vw camper owner myself I have the T 6.1 outgoing model glad I did only time will tell if they have made a big mistake with the practical design changes.

Great review as always! The beach version with a fridge in the back for me!!! Besize de Marco Polo would be great to find out abaut the Nugget! And please tell VW Guys that PHEV 4X4 is a must have in Tiguan for example... otherwise I´ll need to buy a Mazda, a Ford, a Jeep or an Alfa Romeo to get that 4X4 PHEV expirience!!!

In the ocean version , VW suggested you can stand and cook from outside. Does the lid covering the sink and gas ring come off? Otherwise it would seem to prevent that option . Thanks

Let's not forget that it is much more expensive than a Camper Van, which is only 23 cm longer ( 540 cm) , but which has: toilet, shower, normal bed and bed in the roof !

The AWD PHEV system from this T7 would be perfect for us for the new Tiguan🥲 245hp is more than enough and we need AWD!!

Love the video thank you! Do you know if it is possible to still charge the PHEV battery through the leisure battery plug? If you are on a campsite will you need to charge the leisure battery and the PHEV separately?

Thomas tried to let it look good. Did he ever see the T6.1? The most nice items are already in the T6.1. But this is not good enough to go camping off grid with 4 persons when the weather isn't good. Missing storage, 2 burners in the kitchen, a big table inside,... The good new thing: removable canopy. Stuppid things: outside table at the kitchen/sliding door, filling water in the tailgate, ac connection and 2nd batterie as an option,...

Good and detailed test. Low quality materials on dashboard like piano black and hard structures. Unpractical for everyday use on the trip if each day you change location.

I'm so jealous, I want this so bad! 😞 I'm driving the T6.1 California Coast 2.0 BiTDI and its great for camping. I would highly recommend going camping for a long term test 😀 Thomas I noticed that the Ocean variant you tested, does it not have electric closing rear door? Does it have option for privacy glass in side sliding doors?

Mine is the simple 150ps Tdi, not the BiTDI, i find it a real joy to drive, no problems so far and super quiet, and i have AT tires so it should be noisy. But good luck with the new Hybrid Multivan, nothing like having the complexity of a ICE mixed with the integration of EV on a platform that is not optimized for neither😅

It’s got no storage compared to the T6.1 Ocean. I think the bonnet must be longer. The bed has less space between the front seats.

Hello Thomas. Please ask someone from VW if all T7 are getting that infotainment software version. It looks like something very similar to new Tiguan and Passat (version 4.0 or something) . Are they going to update also already sold T7 to this software or is it only for new hardware version? Thanks. And great review as always. Looking forward for your driving test of 4motion version.

They probably will. VW tends to update the MIB during model year cycles, the ID. 3 just got MIB4 as well.

Great video Thomas, but I can't help thinking these vehicles are a bit of a practical downgrade to the T6.1 California range. The internal hob on the 6.1 Beach is genius, on this Multivan it has the useless kitchen where you have to open to tailgate, not at all practical if you want to stop off somewhere for a quick cup of tea! Coupled with the fact they are longer, so again less practical for parking, they seem to have taken something which wasn't broken, then 'fixed' it

$93,790 for the basic trim level Wagon California TDI340 California Beach.

Needs a little bit of lift and a permanent 4wd and could be a great overlander.

Where is the shower curtain or enclosure? What about a compost toilet?

That second car I would say is the best version, 5 seats and not that meaningless kitchen. But why not the same seat for the 5th seat, now it is way to much work to use the bed..

It's a great car for camping. However, it is unfortunate that it costs over 100 million won. Next year, Kia will release a PBV worth around 40 million won, and I plan to aim for Kia’s product.

Too bad this will probably not hit North America. I know some tear drop owners and families with kids playing traveling sports whom would love something like this in the States. One tear drop owner I know had to deal with the township when they threw a fit about his camper being parking in his drive.
