All-New 2024 Subaru Crosstrek // First look walk around

#2024SubaruCrosstrek
#NewCrosstrek
#CoupleCarReview
This is a Motormouth couple car review of the all-new 2024 Subaru Crosstrek subcompact crossover. Two powertrain options, the base trims get a 2L 4-cylinder Boxer engine matched to a CVT 152 horsepower and 145 lb-ft of torque. Second option on higher trims is the 2.5L Boxer engine with 182 horsepower and 178 lb-ft of torque. Gone is the manual transmission. The two top trims comes standard with the more powerful engine.
Subaru says the new 2024 Crosstrek has a 10% stiffer chassis for improved performance and ride quality as well as a revised AWD system with a faster response time, more agile handling and better control on and off-road. Dual function X-Mode is available on the top two trims and all models feature hill start assist.
Subaru says, the 2024 Crosstrek has been designed around the concept of utility and sportiness that lends itself to an active lifestyle. The 8.7” of ground clearance is the same for all Crosstrek models which is great compared to other sub-compact crossovers in this class. It makes it easy to get in and out of the vehicle.
41” wide rear gate opening making it easy to lift things in and out of the vehicle. Overall cargo space is 54.7 cubic feet/1,549 litres. Ample rear seat legroom and cargo space.
The new 2024 Subaru Crosstrek has a frameless hexagonal grille, compact headlights, a broad stance, black wheel arch cladding and rocker panels, standard 17” wheels, available 18”. Subaru says, there have been some aerodynamic improvements to enhance the SUVs performance and stability. An air outlet at the trailing edge of the front wheel opening allows air to exit from the wheel well more freely contributing to reduced lift of the front tires and improved driving stability. Another air outlet has been added to each side of the rear bumper to reduce body sway due to air trapped behind the bumper.
There are 4 trims available in Canada and the US for the new 2024 Subaru Crosstrek
Subaru says they focused on making the cabin more comfortable with more supportive front seats that are supposed to reduce fatigue on those long drives.
Standard 7” touchscreen, available 11.6” touchscreen with navigation both screens come with wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto.
The 2024 Canadian Subaru Crosstrek model will continue to be built in Japan. However, for the first time, US Subaru Crosstrek models with the 2.5L engine will be produced in the U.S at the Indiana plant. Production of the US Crosstrek 2L Base and Premium models will continue at the Subaru plant in Japan.

Those giant screens are generally disliked by the Subaru crowd. They are slow and form over function isn't a Subaru trait. Glad to see the popularity of the Crosstrek though.

Great overview as always. Still keeping my fingers crossed that my ordered 2023 Outdoor model comes in. Manual ebrake, split info screens, more rugged looking and manual HVAC controls. The 2024 looks okay but is soooo similar, the most changes by model seem to be in the Impreza.

what I Don't like about the Subaru's is the start/stop with the boxer engine. My Outback XT shudders every time the engine reactivates from the stop. Wish they could fix that.

Will the top trim have 8 way powered drivers' seat instead of the usual 6? I am 6 feet tall and without tilting the seat I always feel my thighs lacking support. I really really wish they add 8 way powered seats this time.

I always love the Crosstrek. They always have the best combination of interior space, feature content, performance (especially after they received the much needed 2.5L engine) and proper handling/ride compromise. Although latest Subaru has lost some of its traditional quirky and frumpy character, they more than make up for its build quality and fit-and-finish.

One of the reasons for not liking the big screen is that when you’re not using it there’s a big black void left in the middle of the dash. The other reason is that you’re forced to go through a complicated menu to do the simplest of functions.

My daughter bought a '23 Crosstrek and is not sorry because she prefers the 8" screen and actual knobs for HVAC. I wonder, is that Impreza narrower than the Crosstrek (inside the car, more specifically the width of the 2nd row bench seat. Glad to see you guys at this show!

This channel was instrumental is us buying two 2021 Outdoor models ( Canada only ) ….one in white and one in red. I’ve owned many vehicles in 50 plus years of driving and they have been great. Value for money was one reason for our choice… the 2.5 litre motor was all the Crosstrek needed to make it almost perfect. We are coming up on 20k each and they are very very reliable. One trip out east doing over ten hours behind the wheel was easy, very relaxed and quiet on the highway.

This is why I'm leery of the KIA Sportage which I really like. That dashboard & all the electronics. The Equinox is nothing fancy, but dash & screen clean & simple w/knobs. I have a 2011 Equinox w/85K miles & what was back then top of line interior & power liftgate, heated seats, & tiny back up screen in mirror...lol. It has served me well though & my extended warranty I had took care of many issues w/that year model & oil consumption issues. Was fully covered. So w/in the next year, I'm looking for a car to take me well into my 70's. I bike when it's warmer out & my bike & gardening tools fit nicely in the back of my Equinox. I keep the rear seats down because I seldom have passengers. This Crosstrek looks nice, but I'm not sure subcompacts will suit my needs. Great review of what's coming in 24.

So, um, there are four physical switches for the HVAC, temp: both sides up/down; full on front defrost and rear/mirror defrost. Fan speed, system on/off, AC, fan zones on screen all easily found by positioning a finger on the bottom trim. Pop the system on and all it is on a huge screen is system AC on off on the top, huge, multi-choice temperature adjustment, and flow mode on the bottom. Pop it in auto and hardly ever visit any of these screen buttons.

touch screen stopped touch screening last month in my 2015 crosstrek. Dealer tells me that costs 3g to replace, or buy aftermarket for 1g. Fortunately I still have control with the buttons. Its going to be interesting when these screens fail and the manufacture has also removed buttons like in the 2024 Rav 4.

I can’t stand this trend of bigger screens and removing actual buttons and knobs. It’s one thing to press a button in a static car at a car show, and totally different trying to steady your hand with gloves on while driving down a road with even moderate bumps. Otherwise, I’m a big fan of these crosstreks…so functional, and 8.7 inches of ground clearance beats a lot of large SUVs (nice when we get the foot of snow fall like we just did in Alberta)!

I really love the Crosstrek. Lots of fun to drive in a practical package. You mentioned that you don't understand why people don't like the functionality of the large readout with respect to the climate controls. I really do like the way the large readout is integrated into the dash rather than the look of so many cars that look like a tablet was simply stuck into the top of the dash. But one of the things I always appreciated on the Crosstrek was its simplicity. Previous models had large rotary knobs for the climate controls. I didn't even have to take my eyes off the road to use them. Simple and functional.

If a phone call came in and you were listening to the news for instance, the radio would stop, and resume in the same place when the call was finished. I drive a 2014 Impreza hatchback and whenever I decide to get rid of it I’m looking for a subcompact SUV. I wish Subaru had something else between the Impreza and the Forester besides just a raised Impreza. I feel like I’d be paying more just to get the same car raised a few inches and lower gas mileage than just getting another impreza. I know the Crosstrek is a great car, but it just feels like a more expensive version of the car I already drive and I would be looking for something different if I’m “upgrading”.

The Crosstrek is surprisingly fun to drive. I have not driven the CX-30 as it was a no go for me with the tiny back seat legroom. However the Subaru is all independent suspension where the CX-30 is not. Unless you plan on tossing the vehicle around enough to make passengers sick, I'd say the Crosstrek is plenty solid handling wise. I say that having owned a WRX, C6 Corvette, S2000, and BMW 3 series. All vehicles with world class driving dynamics.

Hi Andrea and Zach, thanks for this awesome review. I ordered my 2023 Crosstrek Outdoor after I saw your 2021 Outdoor review last year. I'm loving my Outdoor! It's practical and reliable in the harsh Alberta winter, with good gas mileage (8 to 9L/100km in the city this winter. It does drop to 9-10L/100km if you warm up the engine longer when it's super cold, like -20 or below). Anyways, I'm glad I was able to get the 2023 model after seeing the changes on the 2024. I like the new exterior styling, but I can't see the new model as much an upgrade. Here's what I think of 2024 model: - the large infotainment screen is a dealbreaker. It makes the car look high tech but it wouldn't work for me. I tend to adjust the HVAC manually often especially in the winter. It takes only a second to reach a knob or button on my 2023 Outdoor. It's safe to do so when driving as I don't need to take my eyes off the road. The 8-inch screen also isn't too overwhelming. Don't forget there's an extra multi-functuon display at the top/centre of the dash. - No StarTex seats in the Onyx trim as in the 2021-23 Outdoor. Cloth seats are a letdown. - the 2024 prices are $2000 CAD more than the 2023 models, which are already $1000 above the 2022 models. (i.e. $3000 more than the 2022 models!). - the gold accents (on the US Sport trim) may make the car stand out, but I also wonder if the car would look outdated sooner. Will the Cdn Onyx version have the same gold accents? - the new wheel cladding style... It feels a little intrusive -I do like the new exterior colours on the 2024, wireless Carplay/Android Auto, and LED headlights, but the wired connection and halogen lights in my 2023 work just fine. There are benefits with the halogen lights and they are bright enough. There's very bright LED fog lights, too), and the phone is charged when plugged in.

@@jamesm.8392 I got the block heater for free and factory installed. The dealership didn't even tell me it was included! Believe it or not, I actually missed that in the purchase process because they didn't point it out to me when going through the bill of sale (both the business manager and salesperson only pointed out items that I was charged for, and I was so focused on checking if the numbers were correct lol.) I'm not sure whether it came standard from Subaru Canada or that particular dealership offered it for their customers. There's remote start through the My Subaru app. Very handy in the winter. If I remember correctly, it's free for the first 3 years.

Let's just say it's built thin. One of Subaru's goals was to provide an AWD compact car with the best fuel mileage. It's popularity besides that reason is kind of surprising as it's basically an outdoorsy Impreza.

  • @PerroneFord

    @PerroneFord

@@ontarioman6301 Subaru's' CVTs were fine. The problem seemed to be that Subaru gave poor maintenance guidance to the dealerships saying that the CVT fluid was a "lifetime" product and didn't need to be changed. When people changed their CVT fluids like they should have, magically most issues went away. Of course there is always going to be the odd issue here and there with anything mechanical, but that's normal. And oil-burning is going to be something that affects a lot of modern cars until we get to CVTs. As manufacturers try to find ways to get more and more gas mileage out of these aging engines, they are making the piston rings looser which reduced friction but allows more oil-by. Combine that with everyone using the lightest, thinnest oil they can (0-30) and you start to get oil burning issues, which leads to other issues like Oxygen sensor fouling and eventually destruction. Subaru tends to spend FAR less money on engine R&D than other manufacturers and thus they get caught with these problems more than most companies. Still a good car, but they spend their money in other places. I can't IMAGINE how much of their budget is spent in marketing.

This Subaru takes the number one spot for a vehicle that I get asked the most about. One huge advantage it HAD was that they were available with a manual at a very approachable entry level price. It's fuel economy. Because Subaru doesn't have hybrids, they are having to meet stringent fuel economy standards with tiny and underpowered ICE engines. They will be getting rid of any options that don't help the numbers. This is their reality until Toyota can give them a viable EV platform they can afford.
