0:50 Odd voice directing choice in dub to not have that "1-2-3" syllable voice sync, especially "Ni-ge-ro" and "Run-Aw-ay" have the same amount of syllables (and thus naturally match the direction of the scene).

YES! I'm glad someone else said it. I was expecting three syllables to match the three frames that kinda zoom in a bit. The two syllable "Run Away" made me unreasonably upset. Sub > dub 100%, but dub is ok as far as dubs go. Not as good as FMAB or Death Note, but it's not too cringe like AOT dub or HxH dub.

It was the “stop it” instead of “stop” like who saw this and was like that’s good 😢 does not a single person in those dub studios care about their jobs and the product they make ? Like why bother then, this why I almost always always watch subs cause the Japanese voice actors feel alive and in the action, they don’t sound like random sound samples assembled together separately. You can feel in the sub version that they put some soul into that. Like is it just a culture difference? Is the west just content with mediocrity while Japan expects to receive a good product for their money? I’m genuinely asking

  • @jordanf00

I think that the sub has the advantage of Japanese being a very measured language. Syllables are very defined. Makes everything he says just naturally sound more punchy. Also, easily my favorite power in the series. "Everything I say happens" is so badass.

I think it’s also just the genuine quality of the work. There’s English dubs that have immersion cause the voice actors sound like they in the action not like they in a booth talking in a mic and not giving a crap.

I'm really sad they didn't use the same speech pattern for when he says to "run away" because that was where most of the impact of that scene came from and it has the same amount of syllables in english as it does in Japanese so it could've been done very easily.

The dub sounds more deep and cool than the sub, but there's something about Inumaki's japanese voice that I prefer to the English dubbed, I think it's because his sub voice sounds more like how he looks. His Japanese voice sounds more shy/quiet, it felt like when he used his cursed words he was showing a very different side to him, whereas his English voice sounds the same. I have no idea if anybody gets what I mean but that's the best way I can describe it.

Thats because Japanese actors and culture speak more animated and freely like a cartoon character. In English sometimes the VAs are alot more reserved and im p sure majority never took an acting class, like a physical drama play. I say this because acting on stage really allows actors to fully become said characters and animated how the character should behave. You can tell in English anway when a VA is fully immersed into a character and as you said it requires skill. Hiding behind a screen and only using their own voice without emotions gestures and physical actions just doesnt cut. Thats my opinion anyway.

  • @ItsToColdInMN

@@semekiizuio i think its the opposite, english VAs always are the ones that sound cartoonish where as japanese VAs atleast more commonly actually sound like voice actors and like they’re having actual conversations. I can’t stand english VAs nowadays it almost feels like they flip flopped at some point. I think subs were cringe in the early 2000s but have come around and most modern anime are all pretty great in terms of VA, where as dubs used to be pretty great in the 2000s but have all been plagued with this deally weird cartoonish cadence that feels like a mix of 2005 nickolodeon and heman masters of the universe. I never watch any modern dubs for this reason, the chainsaw man dub was pretty good tho i’ll give them that.

@@eclipseXyZ yeah they’re are a couple really talented ones, I thought the haikyu dub was pretty great and gojos is really well cast and like i said denji from chainsaw man. But for every good one there are a LOOOOT of terrible ones. My least favorite modern one is eren in aot, he is the perfect example imo of the “tryhard” english VAs, he almost makes the dub unwatchable for me. I think he gets somewhat better later on but holy moly the first couple seasons of “kid bryce papenbrook” is difficult to get thru considering how unbelievable yuki kajis portrayal is. I think if I really had to put a finger on it I think I just have confirmation bias now, I was so used to all the losers who naruto ran in the halls and I just remember how all of them talked and how it was just a mirror image of like early dragon ball or something. Its unfortunate but while the japanese market sorta realised how you can put some really good stories into animation and to take it seriously, where as its still not completely gotten over here yet but its starting to as anime becomes more of a mainstream thing. At the end of the day I just want my show to feel “real” ive never watched a sub where I was taken out of the story by a performance whereas atleast a couple times every dub episode I have to hear what sounds like the most cut together random conversation that doesnt make sense, complete with mismatched cadences and inappropriate gravitas at times

The voice actors basically have no say in what they have to act. They have to follow the script mostly at all times, even if they themselves don't like the lines or want to execute a scene in their own interpretation. So it's definitely not their faults on why dub conversations sound so unnatural.

If everyone is wondering why Inumaki's voice is so deep for a young guy, its because Xander Mobius has a deep voice in general for anyone who plays Super Smash Brothers, he is the announcer and also Joker from Persona 5. Personally although he has a great voice over all, I feel someone like Brad Swaile (voice of Light Yagami in Death Note) would suit Inumaki more only cause although he's definitely not a young man anymore, his voice would suit a young guy like Inumaki and youd hear the power in his voice when he yells. Studios often don't want to reanimate lip flaps so they try and get the English VA's to FIT the lip flaps of the original Japanese... Whcih is impossible when BLAST AWAY is 2 words English, and like one quick out of Japanese. Like how he had to say "Stop it" in English because if he just said "Stop" it wouldn't fit properly. The director for the VA's and the studio are the ones who are in charge of the quality control for the product. It can be VERY hit or miss for English which sucks. But IMO JJK has a perfect Eng dub. Pairs beautifully with the Japanese original dub! If Funimation was in charge of this.. You'd have a 55yr old sounding Yuji, Chris Sabat using his regular shitty voice for Gojo, the old teacher dude, principal, Geto, Aoi, Jogo.. And then a plethora of just GARBAGE VA's that don't fit at ALL the voices. You'd have My Hero Academia Eng dub quality.. One of the absolute WORST dubs for such an amazing Anime. Funimation needs to find ACTUAL talent now.

Oh damn.. I can't believe so many people actually appreciate DUB. Glad people are realizing its not as bad as they say. I watch i prefer dub bc i can watch it in 1.5 and i rewatch epic fight moments in sub on KZread.

@@craerae As I said in the comment section of another video people just want to feel special just because they can read subtitles, they talk about the sub being great (which would be the case most of the time since it was original made in Japanese), but they keep shitting on dub for now reasons and keep trying to make the dubbed version of anime seem much more terrible than it actually is... Dub watchers have no problem whether someone prefers dub, sub, or both, but a majority of the sub watcher seems to always find some sort of problem with the dub of any anime (no matter how good the voice acting is), and are always whining and bitching about the voice not matching the character, or speech sounding weird or some other random crap.

@@Alexi-Raener93 Everytime I watch anime I watch it in sub then if I end up liking the show I’ll watch it in dub and every time theres always scenes where i prefer dub and some part where I prefer sub, Sub elitist never like to admit that the dub voices are good even though they know they are, but i got to admit they kinda failed with Toge i see his voice actor working better with someone like Todd Haberkorn

@@ota9007 toge literally speaks few words. I watched sub and dub of Jujutsu kaisen. I didn't find anything wrong with dub. Everyone has different opinions and tastes. But nobody have right to disrespect other living creature. ( Just rewatched silent voice so I'm 😭😛)

Idk why people love the jp version more than the dub But i find the dub to be cold as hell Like that "don't move" was fire
