Great video. I bought the 3400 some time ago following your video primarily because of room perfect. For RP to give perfect bass you need to place the speakers against the wall when running the program otherwise it works but not as well. Most speakers don’t perform best against a wall. I have now moved my set up to a room with better acoustics and I added treatments. Getting better sound and soundstage now without roomperfect turned on with my speakers spaced from the front wall. You didn’t mention the built in crossover which is what’s really making me keep this unit. The crossover will integrate two subs perfectly whether or not you are using roomperfect. Also for those considering this I learned it’s not possible to run this as a preamp with a power amp and subs. The pre outs are such that you have to choose full range for a power amp or crossover settings for a sub. Lyngdorf confirmed this. Further the amp design prohibits connecting speaker outputs to a powered sub using high level inputs. It will fry the Lyngdorf. Love your videos Thomas!

Hi Patrick, I hope you see this. I was interested in your comment "Also for those considering this I learned it’s not possible to run this as a preamp with a power amp and subs." I am seriously considering buying the 3400 to use as a preamp/room processor for my Dynaudio active speakers and a new sub. I would therefore want to use Room Perfect on the RCA and XLR outputs, with a high pass signal on one (for the Dynaudio actives) and a low pass signal on the other (for the sub). Are you saying that won't be possible? My understanding was that you can configure each output individually and even switch off the speaker output stage. I was also going to use the digital output to feed an external headphone DAC/amp as I've read that the on-board headphone output is pretty average. As you're an experienced 3400 user I would love your thoughts on all this.

All room correction systems except RoomPerfect will change your speakers to match a pre-determined target curve. This means your speakers don’t sound the way they should. RoomPerfect is unique in creating a target curve based on the sound of your speakers. It is the only system that preserves the characteristics of your speakers while removing room errors, however its set up process is completely different to all other systems and must be followed correctly.

Hi. First of all, great channel. What is your opinion on matching this with the LS 50 Metas? This amp is true to the source, and as far as I know the Metas is also very «clean» sounding and true to the source. In that regards I will get an «unfiltered» sound from whathever source I use…

Hi Thomas, when I saw you were going to be reviewing this I went and ordered one straight away as they are in short supply in the UK already, it arrived today and I set up while listening to your review which was fun ;) I just upgraded my speakers to Klipsch Heresy IV and have a Marantz NR1200 for AV convenience with the family and then a Schiit Freya (not the + so it has a bit of hiss in tube mode) and a Schiit Vidar which is lovely but gets very hot and the hassle of swapping cable from the amp or 2 sets of speakers was a bit busy in my room so all getting in the way of simplicity visually and hassle. This Lyngdorf has solved it all, my speakers are 99db so power no problem. Has the convenience now of the Marantz AV amp and the sound quality on par as the Schiit Vidar. The Freya I notice still adds a little extra to the sound stage/warmth (more buttery smooth) so I may keep that or I may be lying to myself as it just looks so good and I’m looking for an excuse to keep it ;) RoomPerfect and the voices is a joy and just amazing as my speakers have to be close to a wall.

Do the TDAI Series produce a balanced but slightly ‘Sterile’ sound, as I’ve heard a few reviewers note? I’m unable to audition these unfortunately so your suggestions will help immensely.

Sounded like 2 quite different amps to me & i was surprised at the difference i heard. With correction off, i thought the sound was a bit 'veiled' throughout all the frequemcy range, with clarity suffering. And with 'correction on' the track seemed to come to life, clarity improved as that 'veil' was gone, which i much prefered. I don't know if it was just frame of mind but i don't think so & with 'correction on' it was the best ive heard this song sound & i must have done 3 or 4 re- comparisons & that opinion never deminished but became more obvious, that's how it struck my senses.

(edit: sorry, you already mentioned in your video that it has a pre-out👍) I have some relatively annoying room acoustic challenges, so it would be very good if they could be handled well by introducing a unit like this, even 'only' as pre-amp with a room correction..

  • @ThomasAndStereo

You can use it as a room correction / DAC unit with your own power amp if you find it unable to drive your speakers. Ideally, I like to see it driving over 90db efficient speakers but some people have reported success with less efficient speakers. Remember to go listen first and don't buy blind because this is a digital amp and you have to be sure you like the sound.

I have one running Kan 2s which are a similar sort of efficiency and reputably difficult to drive and they sound better than they did powered by Naim NAP 180, particularly the bass using Room Perfect. Not familiar with these speakers but given the number of inputs they appear to have perhaps you could do something clever using the Lyngdorf speaker output for the mid to high frequency and use a power amp for the bottom end and treat them like stereo subs? Just a thought!

  • @ThomasAndStereo

Yes, I tried an external amp and noticed I did not need to use an external DAC. I asked them about it and this is what they said " The pre -outs on the TDAI-1120 are analogue - see them as an alternative to the speakers outputs. The 1120 also has an AD in it for the phono stage to accept MM cartridges. Thus the pure digital configuration is only in play when you are using the on-board amplification of the Lyngdorf products. If you use the pre outs to go to another amplifier then yes, you can still engage the room perfect to calibrate the system."

Yes Thomas, THIS amp has really everything, not the Buchardt I150. And on the top its room correction is a real full spectrum correction unlike the Burchardt's only low-freq correction. In my opinion the Buchardt still has a lot of work, to get close Peter Lyngdorf.

I wish to test the said Lyngdorf first hand with my Mozart string quartet collection. If it sounds more realistic than my current rig, I'll buy it. Sadly, virtually all of the amp based room correction schemes I've tried recently have that graphic eq signaure tone that I've abandoned (disliked) since the early 1990s due to relatively affordable SET tube amps and solid state amps tuned to sound like SET tube amps.

Well, you have to be careful. Cause it might reduce your bass and for some people, it is not as satisfying. If you have an AVR and it comes with room correction, try it. So, it will optimize the sound from an 'audiophile' point of view but it might be not be the 'fun' sound you are enjoying.

I recently got to compare the 1120 with the 2170 which got discontinued but is still being sold off. The 2170 has neither streaming nor the app included but sounds clearly better than the 1120. The 1120 was not bad, but sounded more "class d" (less full, highs not as nice) compared to the 2170.

interesting product, i had that one in mind, but it was to big of a unit, i was hoping it was half U unit. On a side note, how about a Minidsp shd studio and Nad C268 power amp combo at same price as the lyngdorf. To me that seems like a more flexible system, and smaller main using and the power amp can be place more hidden, think the dsp is more flexible also, and more inputs like usb. the minidso also require dac's since its completely digital, but any cheap used one would to for starters. I am really curious how good the minidsp shd studio is as a preamp as the only audiophile review i seen is The Hans Beekhuyzen Channel.

My question is are all DSP equal? I would love to compare Roomperfect against MiniDsp. As I mentioned, one measures the power response while the other frequency response. (I am assuming that) So if that is the case, the result can be really different which I am very curious.

@@ThomasAndStereo i agree, its all interesting with dsp implementation. i have not used mic assisted dsp, or presets. Hello Thomas! After watching your last video I thought of seeking your advice trying to be as thorough with what I am looking for. I am looking into a set of speakers. I have 3 vintage amps. My favourite is a Sansui 551. I use it with a set of vintage JVC speakers. 95% I listen to streaming music. I have heard the KEF LS50s and don't like them, I find them tiring. Where I live (Greece) it is difficult to audition equipment before you buy. I emphasize on midrange and bass and I think I prefer warmer sound...I think. After researching, I was between the the Wharfedale Diamond 11.3, Diamond 11.4 and Q Acoustics 3050 or 3050i although I may have a missed a better choice. The room is 20,6ft by 26ft with a corridor opening on one 20,6ft side and the other 20,6ft side consists pf a 4 pane aluminium glass sliding doors. I have no curtains and during summer those doors are open. The walls and ceilings are unpolished lime based mortar. a kind of adobe, unpolished, so it is porous and has a high mass. Floors are satin finish marble. As it is my living room/kitchen, I would prefer the speakers not to workoff axis too. I read about Ohm Walsh and maybe they fit the bill, but they are over budget and not available here anyway. My budget, I am sorry to say, is up to 1000Euros. As funds become available I will upgrade in the future. Also in my future plans a chifi integrated tube or tube pre and class D combo as I find them intriguing. Thank you.

  • @ThomasAndStereo

    @ThomasAndStereo

    3 жыл бұрын

You sound like some of my audio buddies who prefer a roll off smooth top end as opposed to the more analytical hyper detail speakers like KEF. The only Wharfedale I tried was the Diamond 225 and the top end is smooth so I can see if the 11.3 have the same sound signature, it might be to your liking. 3050i depends on the amp you pair with, there is a slight bump in the upper mids and with the wrong amp, it can be a big shouty. Only way to know is to try. In your case, you probably are better off with floorstanding speakers since you have a big room. Given you have glass doors and marble floor, yeah, you probably don't want bright sounding speakers. If you can audition, perhaps the EVO line would also work for you. You probably don't want to go class D route but stay with class AB since you want amps that on the smoother side.
