"All For the Best" with Stephen Nathan and David Haskell.

Ойын-сауық

The two original cast members playing Jesus and Judas.
Godspell (an archaic spelling of the word gospel) is a 1970 musical by Stephen Schwartz and John-Michael Tebelak. It opened off Broadway on May 17, 1971, and has played in various touring companies and revivals many times since. Several cast albums have been released over the years and one of its songs, "Day By Day" from the original cast album, reached #13 on the Billboard pop singles chart in the summer of 1972.
The structure of the musical is that of a series of parables, taken primarily from the Gospel of Matthew. These are then interspersed with a variety of modern music set primarily to lyrics from traditional hymns,[citation needed] with the passion of Christ treated briefly near the end of performance. It started as a college project performed by students at Carnegie Mellon University and moved to La Mama in Greenwich Village. It was then re-scored for an off-Broadway production that was a long-running success, but most people are familiar with the film version or have seen a local high school production of the musical.[citation needed]
The musical opened a year after another religiously-themed successful rock musical, Jesus Christ Superstar.
David Haskell died of a brain tumor in 2000.

    My earbuds are twisted so I've been listening to this with my right ear. Interesting thing: Untangling them and trying to listen to it with my left ear just taught me that people have a dominant ear, because it sounds a lot better in my right ear despite being the same earbud.

    David Haskell left us way too soon. Godspell is never the same without him. I knew him in the role in the original Cherry Lane play, the road show and the movie. I have never seen this performance till 2024...I am so blessed for modern technology. Thank you!

    After a lifetime of adoring Godspell (and doing it in High School like half the world), I just found out TODAY that Mr. Nathan (Exec. Producer of Bones, a show which I enjoy) is THE Stephen Nathan that played Jesus in the original Godspell! God knows that that recording (as well as the movie version w/Victor Garber as Jesus) played a major part in my developmentr when I was a teen ager in the 70's and as an actor later on in life. Way to go Stephen!

    For those who like musicals and have a sharp eye, Stephen Nathan also played the Courier in the film version of "1776". He sang "Momma Look Sharp."

    Indeed, were it not for scoring the role of the Courier, he was the first choice for the role of Jesus in the film of Godspell, whose shooting schedule coincided with that of 1776. (Might be misremembering that, but I seem to have heard that a long time ago.)

    "Momma Look Sharp" is one of my favs from 1776. It points out that underneath all of the political so socio-economics about the arguments for or against Independence, men and boys are dying, and it's the mothers who have to go find them.

    We had to learn and sing this for a school music competition when I was 11. It was hard to learn and sing, and the judge said he couldn't hear the words very well because it was so fast. I never knew where the song had come from until I saw this. Even with these pros performing it's not always easy to hear what the words are!

  • @nonyabusiness2510

    @nonyabusiness2510

    absolutely. You have to have a keen ear. But they sing it faster the second time. The similar approach with the Major General song in Pirates of Penzance. When they really pick up the tempo you've already heard the lyrics once so it's not as much work understanding. However you have to have incredible diction and breath control to pull it off.

    What the heck happens at 0:41? Nathan comes in with the accompaniment, but drops a beat after singing "deep blue", yet is still with the accompaniment for "You bet that Job". That beat was apparently missing from the accompaniment (which seems prerecorded) and Nathan knew this and compensated for it. Weird.
