All Aluminum Side Oiler 427 Cobra Has Dual Quads And A Bad Drinking Problem. Fixing The Holley Fog
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
We dropped by Kiwi's to check out this wild full tilt FE powered AC Cobra kit car and put our heads together as to why it's twin 600 Holley's are literally drowning the poor thing in gasoline.

These motors also had a problem with cracked cylinder heads between 1999-2002, casting number 0331. Otherwise, amazing motor, I just put the crank and pistons in mine today.

I have a factory five roadster with a 408 stroker and 5 speed. Probably 450-470hp. I can tell you it’s legit scary. You definitely have to respect it and never get too comfortable and start hot dogging it
In the early 80’s I had the chance to drive an original 427 Cobra on a closed track. It was “only” a $100k car at that time, that car truly scared the heck out of me. Granted I was only 18ish. I didn’t get it very near its full potential but that was the drive of a lifetime.

I can imagine. Look at Holman Moody they actually built 352's that would take 57 Fords for rides through the air. Had potential of 150mph and easily do it. On the streets is the problem little distance and many obstacles. Fast cars, fence posts and huge trees don't make a good mix.

LOL, this week on Dumpster Diving at Kiwi's Classic Creamery...
It's got a single plane Tunnel Wedge intake . Carbs are in need of some work and the plugs are toast . Pull the valve covers and check the geometry and valve action .
If a Holley backfires usually that blows the power valve. They came out with better power valves supposedly but I haven't used them
New daily KZread shorts: "What's in Kiwi's dumpster?" 😂
As someone that owns a real Shelby 427 Cobra with a side oil, that sounds like a lawnmower. Best thing they could do is pull the dual carburetor intake and put on a single 850 double pumper to dial the motor in. The power valve should be around 4.5 It might even have a flat cam.
Thanks for the video - always enjoyable!!!! Words from an old guy who has been there and doen that. Valve guide clearance on an fe engen is critiall the return for the oil on these engines are crazy and the valves a litteraly floating in oil. He liked the 289 body ,but the 427 just came out. So they built him a cobra with a 427 chassis with a 289 body and engine. Of course he's kicking himself for getting rid of it!

Well ya got some shiny wing nuts for your 55 chev wagon project car
Diggin the verbal back & forth. If you can’t give each other shit, it ain’t hot rodding. BTW, the Jeep sounds like an air pump.
Listen to that jeep!!! I know videos amplify noises but it sounds like a flat lobe. Lol. And Tony doesn’t even worry about gas in the back seat. 😂.
I had a problem similar with a 600 Holley it turned out there was fuel dripping down the secondary because it was porous on the secondarys wall. Rebuild another one problem solved.
My neighbour has supercharged auto in his Cobra kit car, makes for some interesting overtaking.
I had that problem with my feet in a Chevy Astro Van automatic! I have size 15 EEEEE feet, 1 of them may not in that footwell by itself, no pedals!
Without air conditioning those things weigh about 2,000 lbs. So a fairly stock 302 from 1993 without air makes maybe two and a quarter horse. Which is more than enough to propel that car really well. So I can only imagine what a 427 would do with close to 600 horse. LOL a lot of fun😎
I mistakenly used the wrong gasket for the meter block on a 600 Holley and had the accelerator pump circuit leaking gas through power valve one has a single hole and the other has radius cut above the PV if I remember flooded engine at idle like that
Band clamps get destroyed so easily, he probably threw them out for a reason. To be fair, I keep a box of roached band clamps for non-essential uses. Like taking a kink out of a heater hose, or holding a heat shield onto an exhaust pipe, etc.
I worked for a guy for 35 years that was always tossing good stuff. I kept an eye on the dumpster.

that 427 side oiler is a bad ass engine. its almost 60 year old design and made almost 100 horsepower per liter on a old ford FE design without boost. thats something that honda still brags about today with 4 cylinders and this is an old big block! Engine technology came a huge way from the begining of the 50's to the begining of the 60's! in 1950 they had flathead v8's making 85 horsepower to making 400 plus horsepower in the begining of the 60's! I love the looks of cars from the late 50's to the mid to late 60's cuz they were just rolling art and were the envy of the world! no i'm not a boomer lol i'm only 37 I just love old cars the older I get!
Score a good pair of wing nuts fir the bolt bin!
Wow Tony, you'd better hurry on that 4.0 - your Jeep ain't sounding so good...
Uncle Tony so busy thieving that he ignored why he was there. 😤
When I noticed that the PCV valve was plumbed into the rear of the manifold and not into the primary side of carburetor I wished I could've reached through the screen and plug it off to see if idle smoothed out. Reminded me of a time when I worked on a chevy truck, and someone swapped the brake booster (normally plumbed into intake runner) and PCV (normally plumbed into carb) and had them hooked up wrong. The PCV flowing back through the intake from the intake runner disrupted the flow throughout the entire intake and caused it to idle really rough. Swapping the two hose connections smoothed it right out... As I watched a little longer, I realized that carb is definitely dumping too much fuel so fix that first, if still idles too rough then maybe consider different PCV vacuum source. Anyway, good luck and thank you for the great videos.
@UncleTonysGarage

Capping off the PCV was one of the first things we tried...just didn't show it. Zero difference
That engine should have 427 Le Mans rods in it. Those rods are just one of the differences between a 428cj and a 428 scj. Although the all knowing Brian Cabral insists that both engines are identical.
@unclesquirrel6951
Жыл бұрын
None of the parts of the 428 SCJ reciprocating assembly interchange with their 428 CJ counterparts. Mixing SCJ and CJ parts can cause severe balance problems. It may be possible to mix components if every component of the reciprocating assembly is dynamically balanced

If its smokin like that at startup its usually the valve guides and seals? The oil is so diluted with gas now its probably 5 weight now.

It's skipping, maybe a vacuum leak into the valley? I had a 375HP 396 Chevelle that was pulling oil from the ancient Winters factory aluminum intake. Had to mill the intake and use superior (printed silicone bead) intake gaskets to fix it.
@rustybritches6747
Жыл бұрын
It does sound like it has an intermittent misfire at idle, at first I was thinking a vacuum leak maybe a bad plug or wire then I was thinking the carburetor was modified or something or something isn't seated properly or possibly a bad seal or gasket inside the carb but after kiwi said it had backfired first thought was the power-valve, thay do not like backfires! Could just be that somebody tightened the idle mixture screws too much and messed up the metering block which would explain why it clears up when you give it gas, it's pulling too much fuel at idle. Either way I can't wait for part 2
Now we know what that prosthetic leg is for .
