I know we’ve talked about this before, but sound bars are important. People tend to think they’re an up-sell at the electronics store, but the truth is they’re not-and here’s why. Because TVs are getting thinner and thinner, there’s less and less room for a proper built-in speaker that can deliver high quality sound with all the bass we want and the clarity we expect-and let’s not forget when the video is Ultra HD or 4K resolution or better, having sub par audio will really stand out.
I recently had a chance to test out a new sound bar: the 2.1 channel Yamaha YAS-209 with wireless subwoofer, and I’d like to thank Yamaha for sponsoring this video. Their support helps keep the blog and the KZread channel running and I’m grateful for that.

On to what you need to know about the Yamaha YAS-209…
The Yamaha YAS-209 is a 200 watt sound bar that’s meant to be mounted or set underneath your TV and connected via an HDMI cable. The kit comes with a wireless Subwoofer that can be placed on the floor in the room.
One great reason to have a sound bar is the ability to streamline your set up, particularly if you have a wall mounted TV like I do. A sound bar can keep things tidy, but it also means you don’t need to go the full surround speaker route, which makes sound bars great for small spaces too.
A wireless subwoofer system takes this a step further by offering even greater flexibility in positioning. You’ll get intense bass no matter where in the room you put the sub, though it does need to be on the floor and unobstructed, of course.
Size & installation
This sound bar is actually quite compact, running about 36 inches across (or 3 feet) and just 21/2 inches high. It fit easily into my existing set up without much fuss.
The subwoofer is bigger; about 16” tall and deep, but I found a nice spot for it beside my soft since it’s pretty slim.
This sound bar and sub is meant to enhance your overall TV-watching. Use it to get better audio from TV series, movies, and games. Plus with built-in Alexa voice control, DTS Virtual:X virtual 3D surround sound, and Bluetooth streaming all in a simple, sleek setup, you’re getting a lot of good features for a reasonable price.
Setting up Yamaha YAS-209 sound bar
Sound quality Yamaha YAS-209
The YAS-209 features DTS Virtual:X - which means it’s capable of 3D surround sound from a single sound bar. What does that mean and what does it sound like? I’ll see if I can explain…
DTS Virtual:X is designed to simulate an immersive 3D sound experience from just a 2-channel soundbar and subwoofer combo. You should hear a more enveloping sound that feels like it fills the room a bit more, as opposed to sound that’s just blasting at you like a laser straight from the sound bar.
In my listening experience the sound bar sounds great. I started out listening to music from Amazon Music and found the overall audio quality to be clear, and delicate sounds were easy to pick out. The bass in the music was also hugely noticeable and a welcome upgrade.
When it comes to TV watching, dialogue is clear and easily cuts through, thanks in part to special settings which are designed to make your TV & movie listening as sharp as possible.
Alexa Voice Control
The Yamaha YAS-209 sound bar has a secret identity. Amazon’s Alexa digital assistant is hiding inside. Alexa can perform classic voice commands like getting you news, sports and weather updates, she can create lists, and set timers and alarms of course, but there's also built in controls for operating the sound bar too. You can simply ask Alexa to turn the volume up, play movies from Amazon Fire TV, play music and more. Of course if you’re adverse to Alexa listening in your home, you can shut this feature off.
I tested out Alexa on the YAS-209 and found the set up works just as well as with a regular Alexa speaker. You ask, Alexa helps, from playing music, to answering questions, getting the weather, and operating smart home gadgets- all from your sound bar!
Bluetooth Music Streaming
A great feature in this sound bar is the ability to use it as a high fidelity Bluetooth speaker, again, like an Alexa smart speaker, only much higher fidelity.

The Yamaha YAS 209 smart speakers are a good choice of smart speaker for an addition to any kind of a smart home. Inbuilt Alexa makes it super easy and comfortable to work with the gadget while the MediaTek chipset makes it a powerful and reliable one.

Erin, I bought this specifically for its alexa capabilities and am disappointed to find out that it is not currently supported in alexas multi room listening feature. I cannot add the soundbar to any of my groups in the alexa app. I have 3 echo dots connected throughout the house and was going to use this soundbar as my livingroom speaker. Any idea if yamaha plans on releasing an update to make these work with multi room listening? If not then I'm afraid I'll have to return it for the polk or sonos.

I bought this Yamaha sound bar and compared it to my sony satalite speakers which are 10-15 years old and the sony str-dn1080 amp wow what are difference the quality of sound at high volumes was incredible the Yamaha couldn't cope so I took it back to the shop and got my money back
Hello. I’m using this product with my Xbox and connecting it with my phone via Bluetooth since a month and it’s so much immersive one with a splendid sound! The Yamaha! Mind blowing!!! But the issue I’m facing is can’t connect with my Bravia LED tv which has no HDMI arc support.. if I wanted to watch a movie by connecting a pendrive on tv - this bar is not supporting on my normal hdmi port. Will be there any solution for this?
Question! While watching a movie, is it hard to get Alexa to activate? Does it hear you over the loud sounds of the movie? Looking to purchase this, so your input would be helpful, thanks!

Erin, I have this exact same soundbar but after a few months a red dot on the Alexa indicator apeared and I can’t get it to work again. Any suggestions? Thank you!

First I’ve heard of this problem… That’s probably very frustrating!
Question, the one annoying thing about this soundbar is the fact that it "times out" very quickly for my liking. Is there any way to adjust this setting? To this point I have not been able to find a way to change this. Appreciate the help!

I just reconnected this to my TV... I'll see. I think I set it up to turn on when the TV is turned on, but I'll have to look again

I think it’s still going to sound great, but that subwoofer does add an amazing low end element. It’s hard to replicate that Rumble otherwise… depends how much you like the bass I guess…
Thanks Erin for your great video. Yamaha is the best for audio. I own a Yamaha RX-V377 receive e since December 2014, it sounds great with great options between movie and music setting. However I am thinking switch to sound bar. Without a doubt Yamaha will be my first choice. May I ask more details regard the best sound setting for this sound bar in order enjoy the best features out of it? Thanks Erin.
Does the subwoofer provide good deep bass even at lower to medium level? Or would a person be better off looking for a bigger unit?

Hi. My Sony Bravia 24'' have only 2 HDMI in ports. Will this soundbar can able to have get tv sound? 2nd question, is this subwoofer will able to give lowest frequency responce so as to experience deeper thump ?

Great presentation and info. Question though...I bought this and hooked up via hdmi arc. However I have to turn it up about 27 or 30 to hear thoroughly. My last vizio soundbar I turned it up to about 10 and it was loud and it used the same hdmi cord and same TV. Is it normal to have to turn it up to 30. This is watching a 4k movie on Netflix.

I think that's what we use it at; it always depends what the makers set their levels at. Plus some will label their levels from 1-10, while others go from 1-100. Every one is different.
Did you try it on low volume to see how it performs?

How important is it not to have or not Dolby Atmos license??? I’m considering buying it but not having Atmos makes me step back..Dts-x can used with any content or it has to be content specifically prepared for it¿? Thanks
Hi Erin. Enjoyed your review and bought the YAS-209. Fantastic sound bar, very happy. QQ. When I switch to 3D Surround, the led indicator is supposed to turn blue. Mine simply goes blank. Not a major issue. Any suggestions.

I’ve been using this bar for quite some time now. Has anybody figured out a way to have an Alexa routine reliably change the input setting? Bonus question: why don’t I see the bar in my “all devices” on Alexa?

I agree with you about most high end HDTVs having poor audio but with the exception of the LG C9 OLED. I bought one last week with the intension of buying a sound bar shortly afterwards but I've been pleasantly surprised with the sound. Its not 5.1 surround sound but it sounds very good and it gets loud if you like that. For most people it sounds perfecty acctepatble but I agree, most HDTVs today have really weak sound.

Good question! I like them both for different reasons. They both sound great but the beam is small and blends in a bit better into my space.
Your intros are pretty good....something I could take with me for my channel.

Buy the Yamaha I have it of course and it’s amazing! Really! I’m an audio aficionado! I love Bose, javra, Sonos, but this thing whith the 3D sound mode on its just amazing!!!!!

I feel like it is worth it. Also, my husband loves it too. We have had a chance to try new ones and he wants to keep this one.
Disappointed unit cannot be used as amazon echo multi-room speaker, would have purchased otherwise. Hope Yamaha/Amazon fix this, then I will buy.

I do not think it is possible to add additional speakers for surround based on what I have read. Hope I'm wrong.
