All About the Plectrum Banjo #1 Part One
In these videos we explore some of the music played on the four string jazz plectrum banjo. Traditional jazz age songs, other musical genres are presented. A bit of banjo history thrown in for good measure. This ain't your overall wearin', bluegrass chewin', jug drinkin' banjer music, not that there's anything wrong with that. It's Button Down Banjo.

When I think of a Plectrum Banjo I think of the great Eddie Peabody who popularized it.
Jazz players used Banjos because back in the good old days before we had amplification we needed to be able to compete with the horns. Banjos can be heard over the Horns because the Drum Head is acting like a super loud amplifier.
Great video That second tune looked like the words were hitting home with you 😉
Glad I found your page. I have a plectrum banjo and really struggle to find videos for JUST the plectrum banjo. Thanks!
The Martin Plectrum Guitar I just got is basically a Plectrum Banjo neck on a Guitar body.
Great. I love it!
I appreciate you sharing. I just bought a 5 string banjo.
Nice Vid.
Plectrum banjo tuning and tenor banjo tunings? Seemingly hard to find an answer to such a simple question LOL! Most info I find is on 5 strings.

tenor banjo is tuned in fifths CGDA while the plectrum is usually tuned like a guitar's first four strings DGBE

@@clayton56tube traditional plectrum tuning is CGBD
Hi, Just been given my great uncle's banjo. Took me a while to work out the tuning and that it was a 4 string plectrum banjo. It's a Windsor The Whirle banjo probably pre-1935 (copy of 1935 Melody Maker found in the case). I'm interested in getting to know what type of music my great uncle played on the instrument. It may well have been traditional jazz. I found your video interesting and informative. I play guitar so I'm starting to learn the banjo chords and the positions of the chord inversions. I would like to learn more about the plectrum banjo so will check out your other videos. Thanks.

Thanks Gary. I'm glad that you have received a lovely plectrum banjo! Yes, learn a few chords, pick up a book on plectrum playing style, and play along to some youtube tunes. Have some fun! And keep tuned...I plan on doing some more videos soon.

Hi Richard. Mel Bay has a good book of banjo chords. Find the lyrics and chords online for the songs you want to play. Play along with my videos or ones others have posted. But nothing beats taking a few lessons to boost your efforts to begin playing.

Best idea is to find a teacher nearby to start with, just a couple of lessons. Look up a chord chart and start learning the chords and inversions.
Can you just change the strings and tuning, and take off the 5th string, and change a 5 string to a plectrum ? Can a 5 string convert to a plectrum.

Yes you can do that! I have done it in a pinch. The neck length and number of frets are the same . It is tuned CGBD from low to high.

@@buttondownbanjo2759 Lots of great Banjo pickers have removed that Drone String and 5th String tuner from their instrument when they started strumming in a Jazz Band because Horn players like to play in Flat Keys. They also tuned that Low D down a step to a C to get some lower notes.
