Deanna Tikhonov WHNP-BC breaks down what the mini pill is and how effective it is. Ever heard of the "mini pill" but not sure how it works? Wonder if it is as effective as the regular birth control pill? Recently had a baby and wonder why you were given a different birth control pill?
Today's video is an overview of the "mini pill" or progestin only pill. In this video I discuss why someone would start the mini pill and how it needs to be taken in order to be effective.
As a Women's Health Nurse Practitioner I am here to provide ladies with the education we need about our bodies, our birth control options, changes that occur in pregnancy, and everything there is in between that us females go through!
As a lady I get it! There is A LOT of information out on the internet and spread amongst friends & family that is not always true. Anecdotal information is commonly over generalized causing confusion and fear. I am here to help teach you about your body and empower you to play an active role in your health!

    I had a horrible OB-GYN experience a few days ago in which I tried to have this conversation with her since I struggle with migraines (and have had friends complain in the past). She was so rude/intent on getting me out of there we had NO discussion at all. I mentioned getting frequent migraines (especially around my cycle) and she completely ignored me. I was written off a prescription for the patch and within 24 hours of putting it on got the worst migraine of my life. I am sitting here watching this series in actual tears wishing I had found this before I put something on I didn't want to in the first place - feeling bullied by a doctor who made me feel small and humiliated on the table after making a comment about the tattoo I have for my mother down there. I feel a lot more informed and even though I couldn't get a conversation at the doctor this makes me feel so much better. Going to a new OB-GYN and consulting primary care as soon as I can and asking about this option since I have been diagnosed with chronic migraines for several years now. Thank you so much!

    @@TheLadysGuide revisiting this video from a year later to say thank you so much for this! After visiting the newer OBGYN I was prescribed the mini pill since I have chronic migraines (often with aura) and it has been so much more pleasant for me than other forms of birth control. I didn’t experience as many negative symptoms like I had with others - such as interfering with my migraines or suicidal thoughts. Having this video a year ago empowered me to advocate for myself and a year later I’m on a birth control method that works for me. Having your series helped me open more conversations with my doctor that I wouldn’t have thought to ask about. Thank you so much, and as someone who’s struggled with estrogen based ones or implants this information was a life saver. Much love ❤️

    I’ve been on the mini pill since 2010. I had been on the combination pill a year prior to that and it made my periods right on the dot every month. I was switched to the mini pill due to being diagnosed with lupus and having a higher risk of clots. The first year my periods were all over the place. Then my periods stopped for about 2 years. Then they slowly came back and became more regular. In the past couple years my periods slowly got more unpredictable and now I have been bleeding for 5 weeks! Sometimes it will stop for a day or two but then it starts again. It is very light, almost like spotting but 5 weeks is a first for me on this pill. I am 41 now so I don’t know if age is part of it or not but can this happen after years of use? Help! My gyno ran tests and says nothing is wrong to be causing it but I don’t know how to get the bleeding to stop.

    Hi Anastasia, I'm sorry to hear you are going through this! Unfortunately some women do experience non stop spotting/bleeding while on the mini pill which is a common reason for stopping. Typically by 3 months, the body adjusts and periods regulate but if this is still going on for you, it's reasonable to discuss an alternative birth control method with your provider. Your quality of life is so important!

    Hi Erdene Mashbat, the spotting can occur more often with the mini pill because there is only one hormone in the pill and sometimes it does not do the best job at regulating bleeding. It effects everyone differently so it’s not possible to know how you will respond until you try it for at least 3 months.

    Hi Georgia! So you are correct there are no sugar pills. As long as the pill is taken every day around the same time they are effective against pregnancy and it is extremely unlikely for pregnancy to occur. Some women taking this pill get a period, some women will not get a period. It takes about 3 months for the body to adjust and see how you respond to the pill.

    Hi Lauren! Good question! So the combined pill is the first pill typically offered because it is considered slightly more effective then the progestin only or mini pill and is less likely to cause irregular bleeding. However when the mini pill is taking daily at the same time it is just as effective as the combined pill and many people won't experience irregular bleeding on it. Many things can cause headaches, the combined pill being one of them. Many times lifestyle habits (diet, specific foods, caffeine and stress) are big factors leading to headaches as well. I understand why your GP switched you. I recommend maybe trying to have a discussion with her exploring possible causes for your headaches other then the pill. If you receive any push back on this, it might be time to find a new provider. Good luck! For more support you can find me on instagram @_theladysguide.

    Does the mini pill cause a lot of weight gain and acne? I get migranes with aura so I don't have many options, I tried the non hormonal iud twice and my body expelled it which threw away all my hope of being healthy and having normal hormones. The nexplanon scares me as I have read reviews on it causing a lot of weight gain more then the mini pill. I was on the mini pill for about a year and notices acne and weight gain but I worked out and was strict with my diet. I took a break for four months and noticed weight loss and clear skin so it makes me nervous to take the mini pill again but I dont have many choices. I think condoms ruin the mood and I dont enjoy them either. Any thoughts on the mini pill on weight gain and acne?

  • @TheLadysGuide

    @TheLadysGuide

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hi Han, the foods you eat tend to play a much bigger role on weight gain and acne because they are the building blocks to your hormones. Certain foods help to improve estrogen dominance and increase progesterone levels. I find that when women eat in a way to support your hormones prior to starting a hormonal birth control method, then it tends to work better, avoiding unwanted side effects. It's not about eating strictly but looking at food as hormone medicine. On my instagram page @_theladysguide I share a lot of tips how to balance your hormones.

    The Lady's Guide The Lady's Guide I understand. I eat very healthy for my body but maybe I am doing it wrong? I started the mini pill today and I’m worried of how it will effect me. So what you are saying it shouldn’t cause weight gain if I don’t change my diet? And I will look at your insta. I know you have 4 stages during your cycle where the the first two stages is when your estrogen is higher and your metabolism is slower then when u are in your lunar and menstrating phase metabolism is sped up and progestin is increased so you should eat 279 more calories. When I am on the mini pill I don’t get periods so eating for my horomones is impossible because I will have a high level of progestin in my body since that is all the mini pill has in it. So I’m still a bit confused
