Hi Lyle, great video! Because of all of the information on the channels about the 6.2L AFM system, and my experience with my 2020 GMC 1500 6.2L (all lifters replaced over a total of 10 weeks in the shop), I brought the Range Technologies device with me when I picked up by 2017 Z06 in Pennsylvania last year. Great device - never had one problem with my engine, and in the full V8 mode I have seen 27 mpg while averaging 70 mph on extended trips. Highly recommend the Range device!

Hello Lyle. First of all thankyou for the video. The question I would like for you to answer (if you can) is the following. Given that there have been nearly 200,000 C7 corvettes produced, how many of these have experienced AFM issues? In other words, what is the percentage? I think putting real numbers regarding the problem would be helpful if this is indeed an issue…Thank-you

I have a C7 with the A8 transmission. I bought the Range plug-in and it works great by keeping it in V8. I also had shuddering around 50 mph but a triple flush of the transmission solved this (there is a NHTSA Alert out there about GM using hygroscopic fluid and flushing it resolves this issue). Still have the crappy lifters, but the Range device works great and I never take it out. No dead battery issues as I don’t keep the fob close to the vehicle when it’s parked in the garage.

thanks Lyle. New sub. I've had my C7Z51 for almost a year. I learned of & put the range device on the OBD2 port as you described before I refueled the second time. Had a Chevy service writer recommend it. As you mentioned, GM put this silly system on all their V8s ... the writer had a shop full of Suburbans, Tahoes and pickups with lifter problems. Shifting back to V8 is where the system runs afoul. I wasn't aware of the high volume oil pump. wonderful. smh. I've been pretty particular about checking oil levels after an AX/Drag/Track event. So far, the LT engine has not burned any extra. This is my daily. have put 20K on it in just under 12 months. fun car. though the wheels are not very strong. Have them getting repaired right now. That's really useful mate! I'll add that it is recommanded that you don't leave the AFM disabler in the ODB port because it drains the battery! I have a C7 Z06/Z07 with the 8 speed automatic and I'm using the AFM disabler since I hit 4,000 km, I now have 5,500 km so far so good. I just need to plug it in and out when I enter/exit the car. It is my week-end car as I have a company car to go to work so removing the AFM disabler from the port is mandatory for me. I will now check to install the AFM kit through my mechanics shop thanks to this video as I don't want to have any issue with my car in the future And this I will need to replace the cam shaft, why not going for an aggressive one then and get a small tune out of it?! Lyle, I love all your videos! I did find something out, however, about the AFM disabler you refer to in this edition. I wrote to them and asked them how I actually know that the V4 is not engaging, other than just not getting the indication on the instrument panel. His reply was kinda shocking. Now I was asking about my 2014 Silverado, not my 2003 C5, to which it does not apply. But I have a 6.2L with an A6 transmission, and all the disabler does is put it in M5 mode. So you completely lose the final overdrive gearing, and you are paying $230 for something you can do for free! I am sure it is the same for the C7.....most likely just goes to M7, or the C6! Honestly, to me it is dishonest that they dont tell you this. It doesnt really disable the AFM, just puts you in M5, or M7, which ever is the case. Here is the reply: The device would put the vehicle in M5 mode to prevent the AFM from kicking on. It is most noticeable if you have an aftermarket exhaust, the disabler would prevent the “droning” sound coming from the exhaust when the AFM normally activates. The disablers do reset the emissions readiness modules. We would recommend disconnecting the disabler and driving the vehicle for 50-100 total miles for the readiness system to show a ready status.

I believe you're correct on frequent oil changes. I have a pickup (2008 GMC w a 5.3 V8 iron block LS) with factory AFM on it that I've ALWAYS made sure that the oil is changed at less than 3000 mile intervals. At 40,000 miles I took it to a well-respected independent shop to have all of the AFM deleted, owner asked about oil changes--he told me I didn't need to do it with my oil change habits, just continue to KEEP THE OIL CLEAN/changed frequently and it wouldn't be a problem and and I now have 175,000 miles on that pickup with no problems whatsoever. BTW my C7 is a manual; I wasn't dealing with this crap on an LT engine......

I have a '17 C7 Grand Sport A8. I live in Germany so i can really get on it on the Autobahn. I have also read and heard about this problem with the AFM. I heard that one way to avoid this problem was to not drive in eco mode so i do not use eco mode at all. Now this is what i watched while driving in tour mode. I had set my display to where it shows that little V8/V4 icon. When driving at a steady and low speed for while in tour mode the icon will stay in V8 mode but as soon as i change into eco mode still driving at the same low and steady speed the icon will instantly change to V4 mode. So i am confused. Has anybody with a C7 A8 ever noticed that. One more thing i have to say is that my C7 A8 is built for the european market but i can't imagine that having anything to do with it.

My 2015 6.2 Silverado failed at 117k miles, and I used the Range Tech Module. While it keeps your engine from even going into v4 mode, it will not prevent actual mechanical lifter failure. The actual lifter failure is a symptom of reduced oil pressure. I believe my issue was the formed gasket on the cam thrust plate, it was flat, the felpro thrust plate I bought for my cam swap had a much more robust formed gasket than stock. I believe I was loosing oil pressure there which in turn caused lifter failure on cylinders 4 and 7. BTR cam, LS7 lifters and all assorted parts done myself for around 1500 bucks. Purrs like a kitten now. Just drove a 1350 mile trip at an average of around 80 mph and averages 20 mpg. Once deleted your engine will thank you. Nice job on the video, much great info.

I forgot to mention, install a oil catch can, is a must. The intake, intake ports in the heads and piston tops were filthy from oil being pulled through the pcv valve. I'm 62 and have been building engines since the mid 70s and this was by far the most filthy engine I have ever torn down. I could eat of the inside of my engine but the pvc system is very bad, my intake valve stems and ports were in very sad shape. An oil catch can will greatly improve this.

This is why I will be sticking with my C5. I read articles about the AFM, and it seems the engineers did not design the engine parts to be used this way, such as pistons. I also have heard of incidents where a brittish company supplying the wheel hubs, was providing wheel hubs with out all the ball bearings in the bearings, and the hubs fail. Lots of areas where GM cheaps out on parts and engineering on the c7 and later corvettes. That is a shame, considering the price they charge for the cars. Also a shame, as the c7 and c8 corvettes look really cool. How fun is that, to spend 80 to 120K on a new car, and have the engine failing on you a short time down the road? No thanks!!!

Engines and transmissions failing quickly has become the industry norm. If you want to stay clear, you pretty much have to stay clear of new cars. There's variation in how bad it is for different makes and models but no manufacturer is without any issues. As long as it's legal to do so, it's better to stay with older cars.

Hi Bob! To clarify: The Range device does exactly what it is supposed to do with no time limits imposed. The long-term danger is the failure of those special lifters that make the AFM system work. There are thousands of GM pickups with the same system all over the country that have had catastrophic engine failures due to those same lifters...but those vehicles get to 150=200K miles very fast as they have to "work for a living" everyday. That is a preview of what C7 owners can expect if they keep their C7's for that many miles and don't delete the system entirely. Lyle

The AFM was more a problem in earlier models mostly in trucks. These later models it is much less an issue and the odds are likely you will never have an issue. These systems really do little for mpg or emissions. GM gets credits from the government for installing and it helps reduce the gas’s guzzler penalty. Most of these latest AFM engines were redesigned and issues are few compared to the early LS engines in the trucks. I you are building an engine for sure remove it. But don’t panic you have to do this or fear of sure failure. The Ranger tool eights well. I work in the performance aftermarket snd we sell the parts to fix these and that is where we see what works snd what fails.

I have a 2018 7 speed Stingray and I NEVER use ECO mode because of AFM. When I first got the car I used it some but I did not like the shudder felt when the system turns on and off. During C7 development the cars shook so badly that the torque tube had to be reengineered and made stiffer (and heavier) in order to reduce the shudder. In my opinion, the car is fuel efficient enough without AFM. I recently took it on a highway trip. After 576 miles with an average speed of 70 MPH it got 30.3 MPG. Hot weather so AC was on all the way and had a heavy load of luggage, passenger and a dog in her lap. I took a picture of the Speedo documenting all this. I was doing 86 MPH and it was turning a little less than 1600 RPM. Ran in touring mode for the trip but I normally run sport mode.
