Nice vid! I totally used to do all that Reed storage stuff I must admit, but now I’ve started doing…nothing! 😂 I just let the Reed dry out between playing. It stops any mould, and it plays totally fine the next time. ☺️

Thanks a lot for the Video. I Tried the Vodka method…..and it works!!!!!! 👍👍👍😊😊Until now I always used a wet sponge inside the storage box (different brands), but it‘s a big Problem with hygiene. Conserving is better with Vodka too. The sandpaper method is also the best one, i‘m using it for decades. You are a great musician and your vids are very beautiful and well done. I love your sound, articulation and phrasing, played with Great feeling and emotion. Thanks a lot for playing! 👍😊

Thanks for the great video! (I too was experimenting with reeds since I was a child; my pockets were stuffed with reeds, marbles and jelly beans). Great choice: Red Javas are excellent. As a kid, I was burning tips of classical reeds and sanding down the shoulder of the reeds, to make them respond like jazz reeds. Which strength reeds one should play, also depends on ‘single embouchure’, or ‘double embouchure’. Then the music genre; e.g. for his unique Bossa Nova wispy sound, Stan Getz played the hardest Blue Vandoren #5.

Daddario (formerly Rico) reeds have always been my go to reeds. The newer Select Jazz reeds are pretty good. I’ve never been a big Vandoren fan but recently I’ve been liking the Traditional or V16. My favorites are Lupafaro but are hard to find . Reeds are finicky and unpredictable! I’m a doubler (Saxophones/Clarinets/Flutes) so this complicates things !

When I play classical music, I generally play on a size 5. The resistance it gives helps to hold me back. But it's getting to a point where even 5s are becoming too soft for me, lol. But when I play jazz, I typically go somewhere between 2-3 depending on the mouthpiece I use. Though lately i've just decided to stick with 2.5 and am trying to just stick with one mouthpiece (well, one for jazz and one for classical) as opposed to having many different ones.

I tried with a medical alcohol, but it left a horrible taste on my reeds. Vodka seems tasteless. Vodka is definitely very expensive here in Norway ! I paid more than 50$ for that small bottle 😅 If you should use some other type of alcohol, check if it’s ok to ingest. Don’t use an alcohol for cleaning for example.

I used Finlandia Vodka but my reeds got drunk and ignored time signatures, my tonguing, most of time it would start playing other songs. So I took a box of Vandoren green for alto, and red box for tenor, to an AA meeting. They asked me to leave because the reeds were soaking-up coffee. They blamed me. I love my reeds but they won’t listen to me unless I speak to them with a French accent. I switched them to wine. And tomorrow I’ll give them a little beer (Guinness for the green box, Heineken for the reds).

This is a great video especially the tips about cleaning with vodka. I also noticed that reedjuvenate say to use Listerine original which is not available here in the UK anymore either. To clean my reeds I have used alcohol wipes (the kind they use to wipe skin before giving you a blood test). Because this is isopropyl alcohol it will kill microbes very effectively.

I wouldn’t use it. It should be a high percentage of clean alcohol , without any additives like sugar. The point is to create sort of alcohol environment in the jar so it can conserve the reeds. I don’t recommend to soak reeds too much.

For me now the best "Legere. American cut". Always ready to play, no need to soak, they sound equally good in hot and cold weather, and the lifespan is 20-30 times longer than that of ordinary reeds.
