I have a 1yr 7month old Presa. Socializing them with humans and other animals as often as possible is important. Learning friend from foe is crucial with this size dog. I bring my Presa to work with me everyday, and we go to outdoor malls, the park, the beach, etc every weekend. He's very social and friendly in public yet is very protective especially at home when he hears random sounds. He also likes to sit by the front door and look outside.. growling whenever someone walks by. Socializing them doesn't take away their protective tendencies. They're always ready to work when the time calls for it.

I really disagree with this guy's decision not to socialize his pack of presas. A balanced dog knows the difference between a pet on a walk and an actual home invasion. There's no reason not to socialize, and frankly it's dangerous for all presas if an accident were to occur, seeinga s how people like to ban any scary looking dog any time its name comes up.

people have different opinions about what "socialization" really is . or how exactly must be done . I can tell you that 90% of the regular dog owners know shit about this subject . the easiest way for you to break a good genes protection dog is with improper socialization . with improper I do not mean "not enough" ... no ... I mean improper . this is the easiest way to develop an unpredictable dog also ... if you don't know what the fuck are you doing .

Don't mean to sound negative but this guy has no idea how to train a protection dog.. They've got to be able to recognize friend from foe. I've only had experience with German Shepherds but I have no doubt in my mind these things could learn just as easily. Purposely not introducing your dogs to new people besides the family is a recipe for disaster.

I'm a professional trainer and this is the breed I personally own. I train mainly police k9, security and protection dogs...I wouldnt take any advice from this guy. Hes going to have an issue with these dogs sooner than later. The approach of not meeting strangers is the main issue, this makes everyone a threat and allows the dog to interpret intent...they do not, even the 1% seal k9s, have the cognitive ability to do this safely. A protection or apprehension dog is like a gun, should only fire when you pull the trigger

  • @TheMayito1000
    @TheMayito10007 жыл бұрын

A Presa is basically a multi-purpose dog: Guard-dog, Hunting-dog, Shepherd, even a fighting dog. From my personal experience with the Presa (I used to own one before it died of old age) I can tell you it was extremely loyal and noble, hell I could even sleep for hours using the dog as a pillow lol and he'd just sleep as well. They have an impressive stamina for their size, impressive strength, the guy from the video is dead on when he says this breed could take down a full ass grown sized man like he is nothing. Their pain tolerance is insane which is good in case you hit your dog with something by accident since they are unfazed by it then there is no risk of being bitten as a natural response from the dog (can't tell you how many times people get bitten by their dogs because they hit them with something by accident). Word of advice though: Be sure that at least one of the owners is around when other people are near the dog, mine was fine as long as one of us was around and if other people came around he even would let them touch him and pat him, BUT the motherfucker would get ready for business if an owner was not near enough which is fine since you don't want to own this breed so it can become fast friends with the first stranger that comes across. Also if you are with friends make sure to remind them not to make gestures which may incite the dog to attack them, so any sort of playfulness which can give the dog the impression your friend is out to get you may end very badly. Also, regardless of what idealistic people say about dogs, this particular breed has a natural tendency to be aggressive toward other dogs, even the same breed, so if you are gonna take a Presa out for a walk make sure you are able to control it, you also need to be very aware of your surroundings to minimise the risk of unwanted outcomes, remember this dog wasn't bred to become fast friends with everybody. There is one thing which I noticed in my particular case and I hope is a rare occurrence with the breed, but it should be said: I did state that as long as an owner was around, they pretty much love to be approached by other people, BUT my dog had this weird tendency to change his body language to "attack-ready"whenever he saw little kids crawling, I never understood why he did this and even a few veterinarians were baffled by this, so this is why I alway tried to keep him away from little kids, not because he didn't like little kids, but because for some bizarre reason he would get jumpy is he saw them crawling. So you also have to be able to read this breed very well to minimise the risk of accidents for yourself, your dog, other dogs and other people. You don't have to be a macho to own one, but you do have to be very aware of your environment, very aware of your dog's body language and have confidence in yourself... again, this dog was not bred to make fast friends. As for his ability to protect you and your loved ones from attacks, rest assured this dog is one tough and scary motherfucker. There aren't many breeds which can stand a chance at actually beating a Presa one on one, most dogs (even if they are the ones who start to get aggressive) will cower in fear before it even gets physical. As for an actual fight (let's hope it never comes to it) and I can tell you from experience that Presas could even take on two Rottweilers at the same time and come up on top with minimal to no damage... and no I didn't pit my Presa in fights, I actually had assholes who thought it very clever to release their dogs on my dog and I wasn't putting up with that kind of shit... thankfully there weren't many of those assholes, but it can happen, hell once an asshole who owned a Pitbull saw my dog from a distance (only his back legs from asshole was standing were visible) and thought it clever to approach to encourage his dog to attack mine, thankfully as soon as he saw my Presa he shitted his pants and turned tail, which prevented both dogs from being hurt unnecessarily. When it comes to humans, mine never had to actually take someone down (thank fuck), but whenever a stranger came into the house, he would STALK them, didn't make a sound, not even a bark, not even a whimper, not a single growl... my guess is that if it ever came down to it, he would never have alerted an intruder to his presence, they would only notice him once he had his jaw on their necks. In the streets I came across assholes without dogs, but who thought themselves either too clever or felt like super man and would taunt my dog by making moves which gave my Presa the impression that they would attack me, my Presa DID NOT like that kind of shit one bit, he would just get between me and the assholes, assume an attack-ready position and thankfully these assholes would shit their pants and cease their foolery. All in all is a lovely breed suited pretty much for every purpose, just remember that this breed can be a pet, but it NOT a toy, always give it its due respect and keep your distance when you see signs that your dog needs it. Also this breed needs large spaces to stretch its legs, so if your home does not have this space, then make sure to take them for a walk often and even if you have a big space for them at home, make sure to take them for a walk from time to time, they quite enjoy it.

I had to relocate my puppy a beutifull girl at 6m.o. cause the fucking breeder and assholes online, none of them told me how agressive they could be with another dogs. Mine, almost kill my french bulldog (feamale)for no reason at all, and She was raised with her, (and my two old and boxers) my presa was only 6m.o. Just a baby! I do have Lot of experience with many breeds, training, grooming, breeding etc. I'm so sad right for both of my dogs. I miss my presa so badly. I keep wondering If was there something wrong with her, or it Is just the way they are.

I can't understand why someone would see a person walking their dog and think it wise to release their dog for a fight. I wouldn't be too pleased with that kinda bullshit either. Thanks for sharing, I live in Jamaica so I don't know if I'll ever get a presa, but I love the breed, the dogo and the cane corso as well. I've had a pitbull before she was lovely, I know these dogs can be a liability that's why I come to KZread to learn more about the breeds and how to train them. I believe in responsible ownership, I see people in my country agitating the dogs to make them aggressive with no other training to at least have the animal under control, and that gives the animals a bad reputation, people tend to look at these pitbull looking dogs and think they are monsters, but often times the environmental factors are ignored.

Dribbling down a presas intelligence is disappointing. Mine are smart enough to learn who is friendly and who is not BECAUSE I've socialized them. A reactive dog is NOT A GOOD PROTECTION DOG. A dog that attacks without thought is putting itself in danger every time, a dog that protects with intellect and skill keeps itself and its owner safe. This breeder may have his experience but this sounds like a recipe for disaster, it's like a measuring contest for him on who's dog is the biggest and baddest.

Agree, these dogs in the video are beautiful, but a little chunky. We got a 1-yr-old PC as a rescue dog 4 months ago and he was 150 pounds. Exercised him daily with our Rotties, which includes 2 hours of daily hikes/running up the side of a mountain, wrestling in the yard, and fetching a ball tossed with a "Fetch-it" (long distances). Total of about 5 hours of exercise per day. He's now 130 pounds and glistens with muscle when he stands in the sunlight. He is happier and has 10 times the energy he had when we first got him. I highly suggest a vet-recommended raw food diet to any dog owner -- less waste, higher energy, and shiny coat. We love our new addition to the family to bits -- he's a total goof who loves to play and loves his toys....but instantly becomes 100% protective at even a hint of danger.

A well trained dog is socialized even with strangers. If its triained well it knows the difference between a treat or not a treat. So it will still know when someone should not be on the property or coming into the house.

All the youtube haters have no clue..... I've owned a Presa and it was the best dog I've ever had, period. I generally agree with everything he had to say too, especially while trying to help people understand, its a very powerful dog and needs the right kind of owner. If you cant keep your dogs under control (most people cant) then a Presa is not for you. A dog is an animal and will revert to its own authoritative position if you let them, no matter their size or breed. Not usually a problem for a 20 lb poodle but certain an issue for a 150+ lb anything. The only thing I didnt agree with him is socialization. My Presa met everyone because I didnt want a dog that big being leery of people. The breed carries that instinctive characteristic already and reinforcing a dogs weariness towards people can be a problem, again no matter the breed. Believe me, no matter how friendly your Presa is with everyone, if a stranger has something off about them or has bad intentions towards you or your family the dog will deal with it. They clearly have that uncanny sixth sense about them knowing who's good or bad. You cant turn a Presa into a weeny, but you certainly can make a wonderful social companion whom everyone will enjoy being around. A dog worth having but not a dog for everyone who simply wants to say that have a 150 lb dog.....

The responsible thing to do is to sell to the right person. A person that understands the high importance of socialization. A breeder has a dog for a few months. It isn’t up to the breeder to train your dog for you. That being said, I feel this guy really doesn’t understand dogs much at all and imo he’s the wrong type of person to have dominant breeds. It feels like an extension of his own ego and pen.. somewhat. Lol

Just lost my Presa i'm just crushed. What pleasure it has been to take care of her. A full on dog, got her as a rescue, real eye opener. Got to be on your A game, can be a loose cannon if not trained. Mine was no good in an off lease park, so I just crossed it off the list. Home environment, what an angel and loving and wanting attention all the time dog . Had a fake charge when approached by strangers to quickly. For a first time dog owner no way, I was a little out of my league at first and my wife could not handle her on lease. Can never replace the love and affection this dog gave, and loved being babied and talked to. Have a shephard cross they were best friends but not when it came to affection the Presa wanted it all. They say you shouldnt have favourites but I did, now shes gone, I have to make sure I give my best to my shephard. Would I do it again, im older now , probably not. Was it a good experience? All I can say is, im gonna hurt for a while but what a pleasure to have been given 9 years with her. Believe it or not we had a cat as well and everybody got along.

I know it's been repeated, but man oh man, I am still surprised with the attitude of not socializing the dogs and how the dogs only see family. Why cause this much stress for yourself and the dogs themselves. I understand wanting a protection dog but this breed is already naturally cautious to strangers and protective to its family. Restricting good socialization is asking for trouble with a breed this large. We own a Cane Corso and are raising him simply as a well-behaved family dog. The protection instinct is there. All the time. Oh well. People have different needs and desires for their pets I suppose.

Seen 3 different guys interviewed now and all 3 have been dog illiterate. Why would you have 2 dominant type dogs of the same sex in a very confined space...of course issues will come about. Not meeting strangers? That is crazy! Meeting strangers actually fine tunes dog instincts to learn good from bad and how to read the owners emotional state. I can happily walk my Caucasian Shepherd around the community and she does alright. However, if she senses my emotions change to discomfort that is when she kicks into protection mode. These dogs are not being mentally trained or fine tuned...they are being tortured...may as well tie them up or lock them in a cage all day. Letting your daughter 'who cannot control' the dog walk it when they have no socialisation? Seriously, why do you interview people who either have no idea of dogs or, like in other videos, just get rid of dogs nilly willy. Dogumentary imples some sort of knowledge...where is the knowledge???

And you leave them by them by themselves with the them? That is a set up for disaster. You think by not letting other people pet them is strengthen their mental training, it's actually depriving their mental capability. Socialization is critical to all dog breeds regardless of the dog's purpose and perhaps exactly because of the kind of job we expect a dog to do. Having had a presa myself and a couple other similar breeds my thoughts are that while they're different in temperament to a german shepherd for instance they can still be sociable dogs without taking away from their protective instincts. If the main purpose for a dog is to guard then in that case specifically socialization is a MUST for this kind of breed.

Yes, your right but old guys like me have a hard time adapting to all these new Politically Correct ways and changes that go with it. I do admire transparent people that comment and not hide. So many new things and ways while the World gets worse and worse everyday. I got a Presa because I wanted a dog and have no worry of children at home but would I have got one with kids at home? Probably not! I feel the reasons folks want the breed are not for the right ones. I take my dog to work everyday and need not worry he will nail someone. I trust him but not as much as I would a Golden or Labrador. I did not raise his sister that was nine months old when I put her down. I know she was taken from the breeder at five months and that might have affected her due to losing 3 months of socialization. I do not know but she was unpredictable with people and dogs and was a serious threat. She bore me loyalty and kindness for a month yet when I blew on her face she almost nailed my face! I corrected this but with so many kids in the hood and her with a screw loose I was left with no alternative. And I was not going to lose her brother that I had from a pup and was good natured and he could not understand her behavior. Every fear you should have about the breed and all the dangerous characteristics they can exhibit, she bore. I had not researched the breed well and just got very lucky with my male.

We've got a dogo canario mix. He's a big dog but not even at his prime he was as massive these ones. We got him as a rescue though so there is probably other stuff in his genes too. A great dog and once he was trained and human and dog got used to each other he's probably a lot easier to live with than other breeds that need more daily work. He's actually quite okay with 2-3 hours of walks and otherwise just being with you, which would probably be not enough mental stimulation for a lot of working dog breed like shepherd dogs. Atthis age ( he's almost ten now) he is the happiest whe he is at home overviewing the neighbourhood. Puberty was a bitch with him though and I see similar right now with a dog from the same mix in our neighbourhood. Controlling 50kg of newly acquired teenage angst was....an experience. It takes patience and steady footing. He wasn't our first big-headed dog, but this one needed quite a deal of work before he was a good family dog. those big bully dogs are a lot more sensitve than they seem, so clear rules and a strict but gentle hand is really important to teach them that they can rely and trust you. This is not a dog where you can take the chance of inconsistency when it comes to basic rules. They also have a strong protective side which /sounds/ great, but only if you as a handler can manage it. Which can be especially challenging if the dog is not used to experiencing new things. That's why aditional to the standard commands, at minimum get the (or any dog really) dog used to a muzzle and public spaces like cafés, pubs, zoos, public transport, ignoring humans/ other animals. Generally get the dog used to everything that might come in your way early before you've got 60kg of dog trying to bolt because they just saw a wheelchair for the time. Also one of the dogs that really like being an only-dog, since they are more on the territorial side. Once my boy became an adult he didn't care much about other dogs. He would much prefer quality time with his human family over other dogs. It is a great dog just not for everyone. They are smart, senstive, very strong and if not lead correctly they will make their own decisions.

Regarding socialising your dogs..... I guess it's every persons own prerogative... however, it makes life difficult in some instances....like if you want to go on a family holiday.... how will the dogs manage with strangers looking after them? Or no family holidays where the dogs can't be included? There could even be some kind of emergency situations where you need others to help your dogs.

A attack from a Presa Canario is a hopeless situation. You better know what you're getting.
