I got mine from a carnival... but I adopted him cause I couldn't stand how they were kept in that crowded wire cage and while so much noise and stuff is going on. I decided to adopt one and name him Blue because sadly yes is shell was painted and it was blue and he also had a blue claw. When I was walking out of the carnival I saw like this little 5 year old with a plastic cage and a hermit crab in it. She was SHAKING the cage and her mom bumped her so she knocked the cage over and everything in there toppled to the right side and then the girl quickly put it back upright and everything fell back into place. I felt soooo bad for the hermit crab and I don't even know why her mother would let her 5 year old daughter have a hermit crab when she probably doesn't know the needs and responsibilities the crab needs. I feel so bad... prayers for that crab. 🙏🏻🐚🦀💖 like if you read the entire thing. 😇😇😇 I know adopting it only supported it, but I made sure my two hermit crabs, Blue and Rex, are in good conditions and are healthy. 🦀🐚

My boyfriend just loves hermit crabs but it's extremely sad about how they're caught and how quickly they die right after coming into the pet store because they're forced into these shells and they cannot move in them. Unfortunately at my work we do sell them which is a huge "UGH" to me but i try my best to take care of them and give them more than enough care. They do come in painted but one of my co workers put in some regular non painted shells and one of them that we've had at the store for a year now took to it right away and has since been in his natural shell. Hermit Crabs never go on sale and they're hardly bought except to replace someones old hermit crab which a lot of the times i ask my customers how long they had their old one for and they say 1-2 years which means they were probably not cared for well and usually the people have them in carrier cages instead of tanks. So thanks Lori for giving out more info on these guys to provide pet owners with better care. :)

You are soooooooooo good at caring for your Hermit crabs! I have had 2 hermit cabs and their names were lake and Lilly. I can't believe that they lived for as long as they did considering I had no idea how to care for them. They lived for about a year and you were the first chanel I watched for the care of my hermit crabs witch is why my hermit crabs lived. The tank they lived in was about a 15 gallon tank and I used eco earth in the tank. Lake had a buffed shell and Lilly had a natural shell. I really miss them but I am glad I could care for them.🙂

They can live decades in the wild. If you had a kid and it lived to be 20 would you be really happy about that and proud? My point is is that you probably did take as well of care of it as you possibly could have, but they live far less happy and long lives in captivity than they do in the wild. They just shouldn't be pets at all. They are not domesticated.

Hermit crabs aren't an easy "pet" to have and care for. I'm proud of you too! Most people get them and they live a month. People are shocked to see how much I put into keeping them happy. When the two I have are no longer with me I wont be going and buying them again now I know what I do after learning so much about them.

You just low-key made me really miss The years when I was not a mom and had all of my pets and plants and hermit crabs and snakes and hamsters and over 100 plants in my house… It takes so much time to take care of everything and having a child with autism is a total time suck. But today for a few minutes I got to just think about seashells and crabs so thank you for that too lol i'm all over the place right now you have to excuse me and this comment just letting you know that I am out here watching you live your best life and you help me live mine 🌺 (I feel as an older woman it's OK to drop the hibiscus emoji, but the pink ones are a little bit much for me as I'm approaching 50 lmao somehow in my Mikeymind the hibiscus has become the mature woman's flower…🤣🤣🤣)

I am a mother to a Child with Autism, newer to the whole thing, but it takes A LOT of time and people dont get it. :) I got him a couple hermit crabs, KNOWING they aren't as "simple" as people think, but I didn't want to deal with fuzzy critters or anything that should be handled, I tend to get a rash, and its hard to breathe around furry small animals. ( I would love rats but absolutely can not do that to my body, tried and even keeping them clean and tidy, handling them just kills me) but for something my cats are OK. Our hermit crabs are such a great thing, and I've been working hard at building them up, and I want to start a "rescue" even being in northern MN it's so common to see them being rehomed. :( BUT that being said, I literally work full time, manage to juggle therapies, his school, and my school(mine all online thankfully) and stay home, I hardly ever "go out". My hermits are now my little getaway :) sitting and watching them is so calming and I feel so great I've been providing for them. One of them came to me in A tiny plastic cage with a bit of dry substrate, Her son got bored of it because it started "hiding" all the time. We currently have 5 now, and my son sits right along with me watching them and talking to them :)

I live near a beach, so their is always these "hermit crab shops". My family never buys from them! We buy from a family owned shop just for crabs! (We are friends) We take in a lot of their crabs for free, and stuff for the needs of the crabs. They are NOT wild caught!!! NO painted shells!! They breed! It is my favorite hermit crab place! They don't sell you cheap plastic tanks, they sell mainly 10 and 20 gallon tanks. NO gravel or calcium sand! Eco earth and play sand!! The tanks the crabs are kept in are VERY nice! Like crab heaven!! I love that shop!!

Thank you very much for this video. I also don't support the sale of hermit crabs, but am planning on rescuing some via Land Hermit Crab Owners Society once I have the proper tanks set up (planning on following the PPDS method) after my upcoming move. The sizing part of this video was the most helpful for me! I'm planning on getting a large variety of shells since I don't know how big the crabs I'll be getting are, but I know I'll still have to choose which shells to put in their "shell bar" :)

Thanks for making this video because we were having a lot of trouble finding shells for our crabs that weren't way to expensive and were safe. Recently we just had one of our hermit crabs Amy die from a painted shell. We got her another shell that would fit her perfectly a while ago but then our other hermit crab took that shell and now he's in a shell way to small for him and he has a shell that's perfect size for him but he stays in the little one. He's been in it for a couple of months and hasn't molted yet. So idk why he's in the really small shell

Nice job this looks like you have a healthy hermit crab and you actually have knowledge about what shells to get. For other owners out there who just pick up their kid a painted hermit crab they found on the side of the road which was 1000000% taken out of the wild: DO YOUR RESEARCH. Don’t pick up some colorful shelled hermit crab you have no idea to care for especially since the crab is often forced out of its natural shell and tossed in a bucket with colorful shells so they have no choice but to chose an uncomfortable plastic shell. But at least it’s pretty right? Wrong. These shells often irritate their bodies causing major discomfort. A huge props to her because she actually does her research. Okay thx for listening to my Ted talk

I was getting my second hermit crab because my first one seemed lonely but I just thought it was great because other places dont really care if your giving your hermit crabs proper care. Hello! I am getting ready to purchase three hermit crabs from a pet store that has actually taken great care of their hermit crabs! I was wanting to know if I should put a screen on top of their tank or a hood like what goes on a fish tank? I and putting eco earth as the substrate but I am worried about getting mites and gnats if I use the screen. What do you suggest? I also wanted to ask about and under tank heat pad. Do you use them for your hermies or just a heat lamp or both??? Just wanting to be a responsible hermit crab owner! Thank you for your help.

So if I had hermit crabs the size of the two in the video would the little one be able to move into the shell that the bigger one was in once he changes shells? I think that's what they do in the wild. Kind of like a chain where they line up and they start trading shells. The little ones move into the big hermit crabs shells. I could be wrong on that though and they might prefer another shell if they have the option of the new one and the old one.

I am new to owning hermit crabs. My husband got 3 for my son while in Florida. I didnt realize what all went into the care for them but now I do and am doing everything to care for them the best I can. I got my hermit crabs new shells and didnt realize that I was supposed to boil it first. I did rinse them off really well and dried them before I put them in their crabatat. They have already moved out of the painted ones into the new ones. Will it harm them?

I personally like the non painted ones a lot more. Especially the blue buffed one, absolutely gorgeous ♥️ I can’t see any reason to continue making the toxic ones as there are a lot safer and prettier options. They don’t cost a fortune either. I just don’t see why people still make and buy them.

My hermib crab came with the painted+glossed shell and he doesn't move out of it. He's very shy and only comes out at nights. I really want to move him to a natural shell without the paint. What should I do? Just wait, hoping he'll move to another shell?
