All About HERMANN’S TORTOISES!

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

#tortoise #tortoisecare #hermannstortoise
My life’s work involves many species of tortoise but Hermann’s tortoises have always been a top priority for me especially when it comes to properly identifying them! Hermann’s tortoises are one of the most popular pet tortoise species around the world but many keepers fail to recognize the truth behind them. Not all Hermann’s tortoises are same! There are 3 distinct types and in this video we clear up the confusion behind them and go over why they should
never be kept together.

    Thanks to your video I now know that the little man I have had for 51 years is a Dalmatian .I knew he was a Herman’s but not which kind. He is the sweetest little animal I have ever owned,loves to spend his evenings on my shoulder cuddled into my neck! My vet reckons he is in his 70s. Love him to bits.

    @@gillblower751 for sure. I actually take our little guy out for little trips to the pharmacy and stuff too. He's just the cutest guy and he's kind of an attention getter lol. He's still little (he's about 3 years old) so I'm not walking him on a leash or something looking for attention myself but we live in a townhouse and I don't feel comfortable having him out in a shared yard so that's partly how I make sure he gets some natural ubv at least rather than just bulbs. But once people do happen to notice him they're so shocked because he's not scared at all (we live right by a busy road and he doesn't tuck his head in as if he's stressed or scared at all) he's just totally observing everything around him. Yeah it's heartbreaking just to think that one day you won't be with them anymore. I actually have been having these thoughts a lot about our cat lately. She was 6 when she sort of fell into our lives so she's been with us for about a year and a half and both my son and I are just in love with her. She's a ragdoll but it took me awhile to actually realize that because she basically looks like a siamese but she's super long haired. So first time with this breed and she's just the sweetest girl and our crested gecko actually just passed away about a week after Christmas and I think that was where I started thinking like omg what am I going to do when it's Bella's time?? It was so hard with Meat Loaf and he was as adorable as can be as well but not in the same way as a cat. I sure wouldn't be able to let him loose inside and relax...he would be in a vent in no time lol. Where as Bella and I have our special moments and she obviously interacts with us a lot more. And her time on this earth will be a lot shorter than Chompy's as well....that's our tortoise's name. The one comfort I have for when pass away since Chompy is still just starting his life pretty much is that I know darn well that my son wouldn't give him up for anything. He takes after me with his love of most creatures and he's just turning 11 in a couple months so he still has a whole lifetime to devote to our guy.

  • @jenniferspence7092

    @jenniferspence7092

    I have to laugh though. Chompy goes directly up to cuddle into the crook of my neck almost every time we're hanging out relaxing at home and twice my son pointed out that he also took a big poop while up there too lol. And the first time I actually had been eating a chocolate bar and I was like ok did I make a mess and somehow got chocolate all over my cheek and on my shoulder etc and it melted or did he trample that thing completely until you couldn't even see that there had been a solid poop of any sort and get it all over me in the process....lol. since then I usually try and make sure I drape a towel or something over me and periodically check and see if he's doing his business lol.

    @@jenniferspence7092 Lovely to hear about your other pets. I also have a Mediterranean spur tortoise but she’s very much an I will come to you if I want to, if not leave me alone kind of girl. I agree about having a towel over the shoulder, I’ve been weed on many times. My little man(Billy) now comes to me at cuddle time, looks up at me and raises himself on his front legs as high as he can, and then lifts one leg up which I think means come on then, pick me up! Surprising how much a little brain can work out.

    Yes! You and Kenan posting so close makes my Sunday amazing. I think the Hermann’s tortoise is gorgeous and if I wasn’t so old, I would set my yard up as a rescue. Athena is stunning and I have a question about her. Is she an older tortoise? I’m curious as her carapace looks like it’s had some wear and tear via weathering, length of time and perhaps combat. 🐢❤️🐢

    thank you for this video! it was sooo educational and interesting. i live in spain and my parents decided to buy a hermann's tortoise 8 years ago when i was 14, i believe keeping pure eastern hermann's tortoises here is illegal since they're endangered so i'm pretty sure ours is a hybrid. he's fairly small and has traits of both the eastern and the dalmatian hermann's tortoises. i'd love to see a video about hybrids because we never exactly knew what species he is and it'd be nice to figure out! we love him to death no matter what, he loves chasing us and playing with us!!! he's such a joy and has such a fun personality 💗💗 we even think he might be an eastern hermann's tortoise mixed with a greek tortoise, i wish i was older when my parents bought him from that breeder and had more knowledge to know what we were getting, but either way we're giving him the happiest life possible 💕

I can't wait to check out Ichijuku when she (still not 100% sure on the sex yet, i think its a female) wakes up from Hivernation (name in french) and see if she is indeed a true Western. I hope to see that video on the mixed, because she could be mixed. Se definitely has the sub-ocular yellow spot, but I have to check the other signs. Anyways I love her. She is living in an enclosure in my smallish backyard in the south of France, I've had her since she was probably a year old or so.
