Very gratifying to see a woman with knowledge on something other than 'crafts'. This video is wonderful! Just seeing all your tools on the wall was exciting. The chart at 6:14 was enormously helpful as I wanted to know the high end brands. I'm just starting out but don't see the point in investing in low quality 'beginners' tools as others suggest. Any tool should be high quality and you just buy a couple and see if you will continue. Excellent explanation on tools. I hope you will demo some of the tools discussed. I would also love to see a video on just sharpening/ honing techniques. Thank you, and subscribed!

The company has been going for many years and produce very well handmade tools, which l only use myself, i did want to point out there are other companies here in the UK that also make these kinds of tools but for some reason the shape and depth of cut differs, this is why l stick to the sizes that Ashley Iles tools use all the very best allan stoke on trent UK

Stubai - great for rough work with mallet/holds working edge for long time but not so much a razor edge Pfeil - not good for rough work because of very hard steel/ gets really sharp, holds edge, rather expensive Dastra - definately the best for the money. simple design, but great, nothing fancy carbon steel. does everything you want it to. Kirschen/2 cherries - most common here, also for woodworking in general. Relatively inexpensive, chrome-vanadium steel. Not my preferred choice, but everyone has some of them here. You can get them cheap on ebay, and they do the job, but obviously aren´t the best tools. I´m surprised you can get Dastra tools overseas, because it is a really small business and even here in Germany it is really hard to get a hold of them.

i want to get into making cups, bowls, kuksas and spoons. i have spoon knives that i have been using but ant to start using gouges. cups and bowls can get deep. what do you suggest that i start with?

Hello Mary, just subscribed! I believe that Pfeil is one of the few chisel companies that are carve ready out of the box.... Which other brands are carve polished, or should i say carve ready with a polished edge...?

Hi Gene. i don't know if you have a Woodcraft store near you,but that's where I've been buying my chisels. They carry a lot of Pfeil brand chisels. Pfeil chisel are Swiss made. An in my opinion are a good quality professional grade,but they are 5 or 6 other just as good an they all have their pros an cons. Just remember wood carving chisels an bench top chisels are two different chisels. So stay away from any big box store,or you'll be greatly disappointed. An besides you can also shop online for your chisels. Just do some research first on the "Big Six" an remember you'll always get what you pay for. Most chisels are usually priced in the low $40.00 usd range and up. I guess you can tell my brand of choice is Pfeil. An their always ready to use right out of the sheath,and at the worst end of the spectrum you may have to strop it on the leather 1/2 dozen times at first to get it autopsy sharp. But don't drop them; they keep a razors edge because they have a RC hardness of around 60 to about 63. So if dropped they could chip; perhaps that's why they have octagon handles lol. An another company that's awesome for quality,and value. Is Narex; they're a Czech Republic company; well Czech Republic from 1993... so if I'm saying the country wrong it's by mistake,and no disrespect is meant. Anyway Narex makes chisels draw-knives, chip-carving knives,and others. Their steel is as good of quality as any other of the big 6 chisel Co. I only have their 4 piece bench set,but it was awesome right out of the packaging an I probably spent less time truing up these chisels out of any "bench chisels" that I've ever owned. I would definitely consider these chisels professional archival,or restoration sculpting quality. My apologies for the long read in the comments. P.S. I do hope 2020 gets better for us all,and by the way did anyone wake up on Valentine's day thinking a face mask an a package of TP would be something your girlfriend might really treasure a few months down the road...what!?!?...why hell no,but look at us now!😧🤪😆🤣

Hey Mrs. May! I'm 22 and I'm just starting to look into becoming a wood carver. Your videos are the first I'm watching to hopefully grasp the basic techniques and knowledge base to begin my own projects. I'd say I'm primarily interested in the relief style of carving but I want to be diverse and do letter/chip carving and eventually 3-D carving as well! I am just wondering what would be a good type of wood to start out with. I tried using balsa wood when I was much younger and didn't really know what I was doing. I seem to recall that it was too soft for my taste. Any suggestions on that front? Thanks for the inspiration! I will continue to watch your videos. You're a wonderful teacher and your advice has been very valuable! P.S. Love the background music :)

+Jordan Pryce Thanks! Basswood is a great wood to start out with. Butternut is also good, but is more difficult to locate. Balsa wood is definitely too soft.

I just saw a video on a guy using Lime Wood. Apparently its soft enough for carving a bas relief. FYI - Its MS not MRS. 2018 not 1950. Times are a changing dude. Mrs is outdated, outmoded, outlived, outnumbered, and so out there. Keep up with the times.

+Mark Foo That is referred to as a #12, 6mm. Sometimes other companies refer to it as a #41, 6mm. Hope this helps.

+Larry Tipson I am aware of their stone chisels, but I do not know about their carving chisels. Their stone carving chisels are great, so I'm assuming the quality of the woodcarving chisel are also good quality.

I've stabbed my middle finger on my first day carving. After that I wear a garden glove (can't find any other gloves here). Trying to carve a 3D miniature of my fist clenched on the tip of a cylinder wood of diameter 3.14cm. Any advice? :) or could you do a tutorial for carving a clenched fist and an open palm. I plan to make something very cool!

I look at your wall and I see a lot of MONEY hanging there, great collection of work tool.

i started looking around for gouges on amazon. wtf, there's absolutely no info on the curvature numbers. Also ALL the stuff from china are beveled on the wrong side! I'm after very specific curvatures so don't know what to do

What are those 15 that you said you might only need? if you wanted a smaller collection haha

Why are your gouges hanging on a magnetic strip? I heard that is a very bad idea... because of the metal that sticks to them when you sharpen them....

It magnetizes the chisel steel making it difficult to remove all the burr filings, they tend to stick to the front outside corners. because the filings are the same hardness as the edge they can blunt it or damage the edge. use a lightly oiled paper towel or rag and wipe the edge, then a light stroke through a scrap piece of wood at 45 degrees will clean them off. You can demagnetize the chisels, buy a demagnetizer machine off ebay or Amazon for around $50-60.00.

i bought today 3 chisels and they have no handlers :((((((((((((((

ramy وافي wafy وافي Another possibility is making your own tools. If you live in an area where money is extremely hard to come by but want to follow your passion. Make them yourself. If you can find any good metal, creating a forge is rather simple. Otherwise you're just going to have to somehow save up till you can get what was described here.

Look at her chart at 6:14. Go to Amazon. Check out Swiss Made and Pfeil, and Two Cherries. Search on the phrase, ' wood carving Swiss Made', then 'Pfeil', etc. FYI - Buy cheap and regret it. Buy top quality only. If you cannot afford it, save up and wait till you can.
