All about Flux!

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

SW-401 Light Flux and SW-402 Dark Flux are mid-range glazes that were developed to be used in combination with other mid-range glazes to produce flowing effects. Designed to fire to cone 5/6, but can be fired to cone 9/10 (movement will be more pronounced at higher temperatures). In this video we deep dive into Flux and how to use it. I really liked the reaction you get when you apply the light flux underneath the under glaze colors. My question is how heavily do you apply the flux? I heard you say blobbed on the piece. So do you just touch the pieces lightly or do you brush it on the piece?

    Are you referring any of these projects in regard to the underglaze color and flux? There are no underglazed used on this project so we want to be sure you are understanding it correctly! As far as the flux application goes, we fully load the brush and then plop it onto the piece simply by making contact with it. We are not applying it with brush strokes in this particular application.

    Do you have any videos where your making the one with raspberry mist, was hoping to see how you applied the Car ibean under glaze and light and dark flux. (I tried this and the top worked as in the pic but the lower part wasn’t smooth had some pirocity (pin holes and used 3 layers of raspberry mist. I’m think too thick because I’m pretty sure the inside of the vase top didn’t have as many. But was curious how you received the long running lines, not sure of the amount of flux or if you brushed it on, or used the the bottled tips to do bead lines etc. I was hoping to find the same for the last on with Macadamian on it. Would be neat to see how they are applied dry. (Tied the link to the instragram and still requires me to have an account etc (FYI thanks for the help, I did find the one you linked on Facebook).

    The Raspberry mist can have surface texture if it is applied thick. So that makes sense on the bottom section of the vase. We are always sure to pull the coats out all of the way with that color since we really tend to slap the glaze one. We do have videos of the other 2 and can link the Facebook links for you! Sorry we made those before we had a real system gor creating our KZread videos. m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=10156993707722986&id=204801867985 m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=10157051590972986&id=204801867985

    It would be really helpful if in your product info videos if you showed sample tile with light flux under a dark matt, and a light Matt, under a dark crystal and light crystal, under a dark regular stone ware and light sto eware and then all the same but flux overtop instead of under. Having 2 or 3 colours plus a Stoke and coat etc isn't super clear in what I am seeing. Showing some cool multiple combination is nice to see too but I would love to better underand the difference between it over and under on different types.

    How do Mayco glazes perform on glass, do they need to be capped?

    We typically only recommend using our Designer Liners on glass. Most of our glazes need to be fired hotter than glass to mature.

    Typically stoneware items are dry footed. Flux is a stoneware product, but you are correct, Cascades is a similar product for low-fire.

    Also how do you use a kiln brick? What kind of kiln brick? The air bricks? Do you put kiln wash on the brick?

  • @MaycoColors

    @MaycoColors

    3 жыл бұрын

    We use extra kiln bricks as a barrier between the piece and the shelf on projects that we know will have some movement. So anything that will sit flat, for use that is the brick that you would use to build the inside wall of a kiln where the elements go. You can put kiln wash on them, but it is not necessary. If kiln bricks are not accessible to you, using a tile or some other sacrificial barrier would work. The point is basically to conserve the shelves.

    Question: I have a finished porcelain vase with red gold over light shino. I didn't get the effects I wanted and I want to try flux. I'm wondering if I can apply flux over the top, maybe 1/3, and refire (cone 6 oxidation). Thanks for your video! Very helpful!
