The Black Russian Terrier is a produce of Soviet Union's famous military operation, Red Star Kennel. The BRT is a large breed with exceptional agility and intelligence. Initially bred to work alone the breed is independent thinking. Over the past thirty years though the breed as been bred more towards a companion animal. Dogs like the Newfounland were introduced to calm the BRT's temperament.

Brilliant breed, intelligent with great intuition. Not for the faint hearted, not a first time dog by any means without sufficient support and training, high maintenance and sensitive. I'm a dog trainer and I've never had anything like a BRT. I wouldn't trade her for the world.

As an owner of an AKC champion and full metal 140 lb man stopper, I agree. My boy died a couple of years ago and I am now in the mental state where I can get another dog, I will be picking up my new BRT boy in a few weeks. I think they are very much like a Bouvier(what I had prior to my BRT who was an unbeatable dog) except they bring a much bigger hammer. My Bouv was a little more serious about life, where as my BRT was a goofball until circumstances required different. Were it not for the coyotes around here I would be very torn between a BRT and a Bouv. Two coyotes against one Bouv sort of an even fight with the edge going to the Bouv, with the BRT 4 yotes vs 1 BRT the BRT wins. Love them both.

My daughter and son in law have female BRT , now about 5 years old. This is their first dog, they put a lot of work into training her, got her from an excellent Canadian breeder who carefully matched the dog’s temperament to their needs. This has been great success. Super smart dog.

Interesting video, thanks for sharing. I own a BRT, he is just over 16 months old. I am continually fascinated by him, and the breeder my husband and I got him from is very knowledgeable and I respect her immensely. In my (limited) experience and on the advice of our breeder, I find it is important to provide continual mental stimulation for this breed. Also, I can relate to her saying in this video that you can speak to them in sentences rather that simple commands. Again, our breeder suggested introducing commands starting with simple and working towards 3-4 step commands over time and then beyond. Very interesting to observe this progression. Our dog is proving to be an amazing part of our family, he is not a show dog but provides a very protective energy for our family. We are so grateful for him, and tell him so every day. He is an incredible being.

Newfys were part of the original breed stock and were NOT introduced to soften the temperament. The "slightly" steadier temperament is so handlers don't get their arms jerked out of the socket by hair trigger dogs. Also these dogs are thinkers not reactors like some other guarding breeds and they have been that way for a long time, relative to the length of time the breed has been around.

If you watch the video carefully you can see the old pictures of dogs of this breed when Red Star kennel was started to present them. First the size. They were much shorter and lighter then now. Before standard was saying-- no higher than 74 cm in withers. Now no any limitations. The second -- coat. From the beginning their coat was shorter than the coat of Giant Schnauzer and they did not need to be trimmed at all. The main purpose of this breed was a military dog! No body will keep the dog which needs constant trimming in army. No body. What we see now is a show and pet breed only.Nothing else and nothing more.

    1. you are seeing old pictures of the first dogs before they bred true. 2. There are size limitations, take the time look up the AKC,CKC,FCI standards and you find this very easily. Yes their coats today look heavier in the ring than in the old days, that is because they were being shown in summer working cut. Airdales, Giant Schnauzer, bouvier are all guarding breeds they all need trimming because their hair just keeps growing. Giant Schnauzer has no under coat but still need trimming. Your argument that nobody will have a military dog that needs trimming is very uninformed. What they do today is trim them periodically for the weather of the season. They need a lot of coat in the winter to be able to be out in sub zero Siberian winters for extended periods of time. You say what we see now is a show and pet breed is false. They show coat trim is worthless for a guard/military dog I agree with you there, and you will find many that do not have as hard a temperament, but the temperament you are describing would be unworkable for military use. They bred these dogs to be larger than shepard, dobes, and rotties because they felt those breeds were not large enough to handle some of the prisoners in their gulags. To have a dog of 140 lbs as hair trigger as you describe if the handler wasn't ready could take the handler off their feet. Sure you will see some dogs in the show ring that would not be suited for military work but that is in all breeds bred for a purpose, some just don't have what it takes to do what they were bred for. But I would advise very strongly against going to a dog show and acting aggressive with the dogs owner in most cases you will be lunch. I know this personally from my 140lb 30" BRT. The woman in this video is wrong in several instances most are unimportant but I will point out two. i the first two dogs used (for sure) were a Giant Schnauzer and an Airdale then several others including Ovhchartca, Newfoundlands and others. One thing she says I hear a lot from show dog people that is totally stupid is that the heavy coat insulates from the heat and the cold. It insulates from the cold but from the heat for only a couple of minutes before the dog can be in trouble from the heat. If that were any wild northern animal would not shed to a much lighter coat in the spring and grow a heavy one in the winter. That would be like us wearing ski jackets in the summer this a totally stupid idea. Back to your last sentence my guy was show champion ( I am not saying I am a big supporter of todays show world they have ruined a lot of dogs) but you would never dare get aggressive with me if he was around I'll give you an instance that happened, there are many more but this one will suffice. We were walking on a wooded trail one day when two runners came through the woods. My dog was just off the trail in the bushes where the runners didn't see him as the two runners passed me, instead of going single file as we passed by one of them gave me a hard shoulder as he went by, my dog saw this, he let out a roar and went after them he caught the guy in about 30 yards, less than than three seconds, grabbed him by the back of his head and had him down. He would have killed the guy if I hadn't stopped him. The cops were called but I had witnesses so the guy had a choice he could just go home lucky to be alive or go to jail for assault. He went home with brown stains on his shorts from shitting his pants. So I think maybe you should go get aggressive with a few BRT owners before you talk. But please don't get one you aren't good enough for a BRT. Stick to miniature poodles.

Very informative. But this "not training for guard" and "it'll go for the throat" sounds a lot like some Filas breeders here in Brazil and some breeders of other "natural guard dogs", saying you shouldn't train them for biting. And I don't buy that.

Depends on the dog. My BRT has had no training in guarding yet he has protected me on multiple occasions and the place he most commonly goes for is the throat. PS. I always stop him from doing too much harm.

I had a Kerry Blue Terrier (looks like the Black Russian Terrier but smaller with more of a blue/black color) and he was ferocious! Bit me three times. I had to give him back to the breeder (I hate kill shelters!). I would have kept him because he didn't take anybody's sh** and was an amazing guard dog, but he was a terror around other dogs except his own breed. :( Made it difficult to socialize him.

Breeders like this have no place in the "working dog world..." You take a breed that was bred for decades for a certain purpose only to water down the breed and turn into a prancing pony that can do nothing but be a pretty statue in the dog show world. True Working dogs are not for the faint of heart.

Breeder was in Newark Delaware. Forgot her name. She was on the Board of the BRT Club of America at one time. Both of our dogs were neutered males. Ruffy weighed 140 and Scruffy weighed 160, but were within the standards otherwise. We lived in Switzerland for my job while we had Ruffty. He loved hiking in the Alps in the snow.

It was not a military dog by any means. The dog, knickname Stalin Dog, was developed to guard concentration camps, GULAGs. The original BRTs were developed to chase escapees and attach groin area instead of hand or wrist.

Thank God for the explanation in the description, otherwise, I would have asked to please elaborate and define who are ''we'' when you say: ''We've evolved since then and we've gotten a dog that does work well in families...''(5:18). You make it sound as if you personally made an input in bringing out all the positive character traits that BRT had from 1950. I strongly disagree on the opinion that BRT wasn't a companion and it may not have bonded with the handler even before that time. This breed depends on social interaction as said, but it also is strongly attached to it's owner right from the start. I hardly know any breeds as attached to a human as this one. This breed is particularly good around children and is a good babysitter. Of course, a breed like that has to have proper training and discipline at an early age. This breed needs a responsible owner who understands all the time and care this breed needs. But with responsible human, this breed shows how truly intelligent, adaptive, stable, fun and lovable this dog is. My family was first time owners and one of the first families that brought BRT from Russia to Europe. In my personal opinion, this is the best breed a human can ask for.
