Ice storm's "painfully slow travel time" is what makes it so great. It lingers and keeps doing it's damage on the enemy

If you play this game for almost 12 years, you learn that the useless spells you thought are useless destruction spells are only useless by themselves. I only use runes as a placement setup for my summoned atronachs. Since they are immune to the rune of the matching type, you can use both of these spells while giving yourself time to prepare for your next attack. That is only one of many combinations you can use in your arcane arsenal.

My dog had seizure a when some magical anomalies appeared randomly on the screen. I was 15 and felt horrible about it, it was her first seizure. I didn’t play Skyrim for awhile because she liked to sit on my lap while I played video games. F***ing magical anomalies, man

I mean, cloak spells aren’t _meant_ to be your main source of damage. They’re meant to be thrown on right before you get deep into the fray with your melee weapon(s). I think they compliment a dual-wielding playstyle the best, but they also work well with a shield.

I agree, cloak spells are nice for a melee build as an extra source of damage. Doesn't mean they should be very high on the ranking, because they are only really good in combination with other methods of dealing damage, but they should be ranked slightly higher imo

Lightning storm is underrated because of its effectiveness against dragons. It has unusually high range and instant travel time making it perfect for shooting them down. But it gets better: Not enough people know that dragons use magicka to shout and that they have very small magicka pools. All varieties are also weak to shock. So you can use shock spells, especially Lightning Storm to force them to the ground and into melee. But with the stagger perk you can stun-lock them once grounded. A lightning mage is an S-tier dragon slayer.

Yeah, I enjoy the magical Ghostbusters beam for fighting dragons. They take so long flying around before attacking that it makes this spell especially suited to them. Otherwise I limit the spell to specific environmental uses, such as: sneaking through a dungeon, finding a long corridor, sending enemies down the corridor away from me with Magelight, then charging up Lightning Storm since they have to run up the tunnel to reach me.

Shock wall and lightning rune are actually one of the better ways to deal with magic users because it both does lightning damage and can get around a ward

These videos are making me want to do a mage build. Which I’ve never done before and I want to try it. I was always turned off by magic in Skyrim because it’s hard to give up the consistency of melee, but I’m learning more about the good spells and how to use them correctly from your videos.

mage builds don't need as much put into stamina (mainly used to increase carry weight or if you plan to use bound weapons the later can be offset by vegetable soups) as any other build you're mainly hitting up health and magica and with cost reductions in whatever school(s) you might want to use even magica doesn't need to be too high plus as you level up the school it naturally reduces spell cost for that school even without getting the perks that reduce the cost a slight abuse of the restoration potion loop with 100 enchanting and you can fully reduce every school of magic on just 3 items (requires the dual enchantment perk and a fortify enchanting potion of at least 400% doesn't need more than that really)

This play through i started a couple weeks ago is the first time i even messed with magic. Honestly being able to heal yourself completely without potions is a gift i didnt think would be as good as it is. The alteration perk with 30% chance yo absorb spell attacks combined with the atronach stone is by far one of the best and most life saving setups ive ever had. 80% chance to negate all damage done by a spell is one hell of a dream when fighting vampires or dragons (since it applies to magic, shouts, diseases and enchantments). I haven’t been able to mess with destruction to much since i have work and stuff to take care of but what little i can do with it has helped a lot for enemies that are susceptible to magic at a distance rather than a bow. Id recommend the 50/50 setup i have because i love it. Going from dual wielding with max one handed perks to healing and giving yourself armor is a perfect mix with good use of shouts.

Then ease your way into it via Bound Weapons and Flesh spells (with the perks that strengthen them if you're not wearing any armor if you really wanna commit), and boom you're a mage.

You'll be very very sad. Be prepared for enchanting like you never imagined. Hope you like alchemy and enchanting.

There is a perk in the illusion tree, aspect of terror, that makes fear inducing spells 10 levels higher. Since fire spells induce a fear effect under certain conditions, this actually gives them +10, or with augmented flames 15 base damage. This makes especially low level fire spells far better than frost and lightning. Flame cloak for example will deal 27 damage with these perks whereas the others will do 12. I believe the interaction might have been even stronger when dual casting but i'm not sure on the details as i haven't played in a while. For this reason I believe you underrated some flame spells. The effects on ignite are especially massive as you can keep rapidly stacking this rather significant bonus on enemies to compltely melt even the strongest of them in seconds, making it in my opinion the best spell in the game.

Damage is increased by 2.2 times and cost is increased by 2.8 times. Unless you are Batman and have prep time, you're good to go facing Miraak at level 30.

Flame cloak should have a higher consideration when survival mode is active. You literally cannot get around some places safely without knowing flame cloak. Other than that, it is pretty much like the other cloak spells. Around level 20 is a decent time to go into survival mode, but if you love to challenge yourself from day 1, prepare to travel to a lot of places just to get near fire.

@Seductive Raven there will be times where you will get into water, or just start freezing super quickly. Survival mode makes the cold matter, and a good portion of the game is done in that cold. The crap part is that frost resistance doesn't do much against the cold. The good part is that flame cloak stops the cold and allows you to swim without dying.

Very very good list ! I'm glad you mentioned travel time, it's why Thunderbolt is my favorite spell, basically a point and click game, it's just so good

Pro tip, the Etherial shout is purpose built for master spells. Especially the one or two word version as they recharge quick so you can repeat cast

Huh? That doesn't even make sense. Ethereal makes you immune to damage but also makes it so you can't damage anyone. How does this make for master spell casting? Doesn't make sense. If you're worried about taking damage then you're not moving enough. Or have restoration up enough. A ward with the ability to absorb spells for health would fix that issue.......

​@@NoelCo-yd1gumaster spells have you do a really long windup before you cast your spells, same as their scroll versions. But almost any damage you take during casting will stagger you. So if youre ethereal, you can cast without getting staggered. As soon as you cast your spell, ethereal will dispell itself and you'll damage the enemy

Some new spells are fairly recently available. Elemental blast, elemental bolt and elemental flare, I find to be really useful. Elemental spells use fire and electrical damage. It has an area damage effect depending on which size of the spell you use. I have found this to be the most effective against every enemy in the game. Especially the dead, mages, and vampires

I like Frost Cloak(along with the other Ice spells) because I just like being a walking snowstorm. I have this thing about ice magic in games, so this naturally would be something I put up with. I always use it at the same time I cast the -flesh spells to take less damage while dealing a bit more, then I just go with melee weapon and shield once I'm set up. Paralyzing strong enemies when they get low on health with the Deep Freeze perk is so helpful.

I'd put Lightning Cloak and Wall of Frost higher because Lightning Cloak is surprisingly good for shutting down Magicka regneration when used with Sparks to remove enemy magicka pools for very little magicka loss on your end, Wall of Frost is good for making a slow hazard to prevent enemies from chasing you (Frost resistance doesn't affect this) and I'd put Frost Rune above the other runes bc there is no other way to create explosions of Frost Damage while the other runes get outstripped by Elemental Blast (But then again, everything gets shit on by Elemental Blast)

First few are why I'm using Vokrii- cloak spells make you more resistant to their element and weaken enemies. Also there's perk for 50% more damage with cloaks and walls + making their effect linger. Also, moving while casting ritual spells feels great P.S if you want to use Fire Storm (or any similar spell) use Become Ethereal shout before. Immunity is broken when you release spell, not when you start charging it

Great video! Loving these ranking lists. I think we have similar opinions on the destruction school. I use firebolt all the time even it high levels.

I feel like lightning cloak got a rough deal in this ranking. If you have the perk (you see it happen in the video) where you execute low health enemies, it is seriously good against chunky healthbars. Ofc, that goes for all lightning spells, but that disintegration effect is borderline broken in high end content. Works better on ranged spells admittedly

Dragons(personaly)are most annoying moving targets when they fly around so when they are in the air they get to taste 20 000 volt more often than Nazeem goes to Cloud District. I love hitscan weapons.

Destruction potion +300% makes the cloak spells feel a bit better. x4 damage and radius. Your other spells are also insane now, but passive damage while not slinging is useful especially since it goes through walls/doors etc. .But generally I do think they were tuned a bit low. Though lightning cloak is solid vs mages, as soon as the mage goes into dagger mode pop it on and get close, it effectively stops their magicka regen so you wont see ant surprise heals or fireballs a few seconds later.

I have found a preference for the shock spells in the game. Because of the hitscan nature to them I don't accidently hit non-hostile characters (except with chain lightning because that will arc to non-hostile npcs if only one enemy is in jump range) and the only creatures that have any resistance to shock are Bretons, who have some resistance to ALL magic, and storm atronachs. The shock spells end up being the best thing for fighting dragons because of both of those factors. The stamina drain and slow effects from frost spells are nice but most bandits and soldiers, falmer, undead, trolls, and half of the dragons that spawn in resist it. Wraiths and all dwemer constructs are immune to it. Fire can stack damage nicely and is cheap but is very hit-or-miss, with plenty of enemies being resistant (like dunmer which are the 3rd or 4th most common npc race and half of all dragons) or vulnerable to it (such as most undead and trolls). Shock might be the most expensive but it is also the most reliable.

Cloak spells get more love from me because I use them as a continuous source of minimal damage while I have to wait for magicka to recharge

Rune spells are awesome with Ordinator, due to perks that boost their damage, range of placement, placement number, and silent casting. It allows you to place them from a far without alerting enemies before time and then baiting them. My rogue wizard loves it.

I have to strongly disagree with ranking Ignite so low in the ranking. There is crucial detail you forgot about it - the burn damage over time STACKS. When spamming it at Legendary dragon at Legendary difficulty, it absolutely shreds them. Especially with Slow Time shout.

Use become ethereal with your master level destruction. Casting a spell will not end become eathernal only the finished spell will. You will be untouchable through the entire casting process

While I understand that there are quite a few enemies that resist frost like all the Nord warriors charging at you, and that fire will do more damage, the frost does still drop their stamina and slow down their movement, which can make a fight go from being oneshot at low level by a bandit cutscene kill because those trigger any time they do a power attack that will do enough damage to kill, to a trivial few moments of kiting them as they struggle to walk towards you and telegraph the few power attacks they can do from so far away that they'll never hit you while you strafe. Frost isn't about raw damage, it's about managing enemy stamina. Also if they have a shield and a one handed weapon, lowering their stamina with frost magic before you close in on them with a mixed build will let get that staggered knockback hit when you hit someone out of block. Also for whirlwind cloak, once you get to midgame and have some cost reductions and it's down to just a bit over 100, it becomes incredibly powerful for crowd control. Having out a frost atronoch and the whirlwind cloak will basically allow you to treat what was originally a 5v1 like a 2v1 in most scenarios since most enemies are using bows at range and will swap to melee if you get close. For a spellsword, every time an enemy gets knocked back is basically 3-4 free hits while they stand back up, and for a pure mage, it keeps extras away from you so you don't get swarmed by more people than the impact perk can keep at bay at once. It's only real drawback is not affecting paralyze resistant enemies. Personally I like to spam Ice Storm when doing a magic heavy character in the lategame, it clips around corners, continuing hitbox, and being at the point where it's free and spammable, makes it so basically no humanoid enemy can even approach you before getting shredded to death. It really fits that feeling of reaching peak archmage power, where basically every enemy is trivial. The only worry is the super high frost resist enemies but you don't run into specifically frost wraiths and frost trolls very often. This list feels so heavily focused on just the raw damage done by the spell which ends up mostly biased towards fire when in practice you're not giving up that much damage to get other effects that can drastically move combat in your favor, and ignores some things like all the cloaks being intended to be used as a passive supplement to damage to all surrounding enemies rather than your main source.

I kind of disagree on frost cloak specifically. Its one of the best magic damage tools for spellblades, allowing you deal passive damage and lowering enemy stamina while still having both hands free. Its tge fire and forget nature of the spell that makes it so good. Additionally its only getting better with mods like ordinator and apocalypse. Getting a free cast at the beginning if every combat and the synergy with the apocalypse added frostbite makes a sick combo

Frost spells are definitely situational in this game, on solsthiem it’s the best to use against the enemies there. I just wish it was stronger, I think there’s some armor to increase its damage too

stahlrim gear increases all frost enchantments on it which just means resistance on apparel items and damage on weapons it's the best kind to use for the chaos enchantment because it will boost the damage of the fire and shock damage as well

Quite honest, the only reason i dont really like Frost spells is that i bought wall of frost fully believing ot would work like... a wall.

Cloak spells are for a melee focused character. They also have the added benefit of not harming companions. Rune spells are traps and not meant to be used as primary attack spells.

I get the role that rune spells are trying to achieve, but I still feel like the other destruction spells are just better.

When using master level spells, try using the become etheral shout before you cast your spell. It makes you invunrable while you charge your spell and it goes away when you cast your spell.

I'm doing a cryomancer argonian run (based on a D&D ice dragonborn) and frostbite isn't very strong, but when enemies get low on health and I can paralyze them, I like running up and spraying them with it to keep them frozen. Feels like a spider preparing a meal

Even without factoring in perks, it’s worth noting that flames is even more efficient than the other two novice spells because it deals a small amount of damage over time, meaning you can cast it in short bursts to conserve magicka. It doesn’t cause it to out damage the others, but at low levels when you’re kiting tough enemies and potions are scarce, squeezing out a bit more damage is welcome.

One of my favorite destruction spells is the Wall of flames besides fireball and thunderbolt chain lightning ⚡ I love all destruction spells 💖🤩

Rune spells are great for stealth play style, according you have silent casting. They are the opening spell before charging the enemy with other destruction spells

one thing abut the novice level spells is that at high destruction levels they can become free to cast even if they don't go totally down it doesn't take much cost reduction gear to finish it off even the apprentice level spells can have this happen

Incinerate absolutely shreds draugr deathlords. It's great against undead even on higher difficulties. The fire vulnerability and extra bonus damage for on fire targets stacke very nicely!

Great video! I personally like using elemental burst

Meanwhile me who uses Elemental Blast that benefits from Augmented Perks with highest base damage, reliable explosion range, acceptable Magicka Cost, and actually deals more thamage than the actual damage that is displayed in its description.

For the long casting time spells , i Always use become ethereal shout because It keeps me safe

Sparks above wall of storms is insanity

Master lightning spell should be higher than firestorm. As it need lots of time for casting it can be used from distance, unlike firestorm, wich makes it more usable

Fire rune can be very useful for long-range destruction mages particularly against draugr but any enemy that is unaware of your presence. I typically place Fire rune on draugr who are pretending to be dead laying down, or encased in their tombs. Helps to pick them off one by one mostly. It deals a lot of damage (because it kinda counts as a sneak attack) and it distracts them long enough for you to hurl firebolt or incinerate or whatever other long range attack you throw at them. Kills them pretty quickly and if you were hidden when making the attack then it typically doesn't alert other enemies of your presence.

Ignite will always be #1 for me because with the mask of Ahzidal and 2 points in Augmented Fire, it will always stagger AND the damage stacks. You can just bleed bosses down and they won't even be able to move. Dragons fall out of the sky, giants just trip over themselves, and dragon priests succumb to the flames without even casting a spell. Unbeatable.

I’m surprised to see wall spells so low on the list. They are easily the most cost effective destruction spells. Great addition for a character that focuses more on hp and armor rather than magicka. Same goes for cloaks.

Incinerate is my personal favourite. Fireball throws the environment around, e.g. books which become harder to find after a fight. Most if the time you're not fighting groups of enemies either, it's not a hacknslay. Incinerate deals more damage on already burning targets, which is great vs high health enemies. And it doesn't require a DLC. To me, it's the most cost-effective spell.

I agree with this list and every play through it’s so fun to find these spells. Also the anniversary edition had bolt, blast etc and those are awesome

Rune Spells have a cool tech where they can kill Draugr still in their tombs. If you know a boss arena is gonna have them all awaken, you can take them all out one by one with a Rune before they ever become active. It also works on enemies on the other side of a door. Ice Storm can also do this, since it goes through walls. Which is another benefit of Ice Storm - destroying enemies in another room without ever entering. Lastly, Cloak spells can not only damage enemies on the other side of a locked door, but can damage enemies without deactivating invisibility. With Muffle, Invisibility, and a ton of Stealth, you can slowly burn an enemy alive without anyone ever seeing a thing. Be sure to double cast it to increase the range, so you don't have to literally touch your enemies and break stealth that way. If you want to defeat your enemies without them ever having the chance to attack you, these spells are all your friends. There may not be any sneak attack for mages, but a stealthy mage is still the most powerful mage around.

I figure out that if you cast secret of arcana and telekinesis or detect life, there is a bug that you can keep pressing it after secret of arcana's efect is gone and is still no cost afterwards, super fast

Gotta disagree on some points, mostly that blizzard was lower than fireball. Fireball and chain lightning you have to aim. Blizzard you don't have to aim and the amount of blizzards you can stack in an area makes frost resistance basically useless. Still agree with chain lighting as number 1... though Blizzard will always be my favorite spammable.

I’d say Frost or Whirlwind are the best cloaks, since the best part about ice magic is that it has a perk that paralyzes targets by chance (Edit : I forgot to mention what makes Whirlwind good, and it’s that it is fun and it’s the safest cloak in my opinion. It launches your foes away and they take a while to get up, and you can keep it like that.)

Arniel's Convection serves one useful purpose outside of the quest it's used in, which is to set oil on fire without any magika cost, which has been useful occasionally. But yes, it's still on the bottom of the list for good reason.

I’m on my first playthrough of Skyrim and got firestorm early (lv25) so I’ve been using secret of arcana to use it which means I can’t use it much as I will get interrupted casting or the situation would benefit from use of a lower range/less powerful spell

I play a Breton who is a fire user who switches in between with barehanded fighting. I use my flame cloak with double casting to add a massive AOE attack while im beating the crap out of one person at a time when they are too close.

5:30 Blizzard is good actually. I can cast it and do something else physically while the spell is doing the work and I'm regenerating magicka at the same time. Other spells you either cast or regenerate magicka.

My favorite thing about this video is the “title text here” for #7 cracks me up

Using the Wall of Frost + Frost Rune combination against melee enemies is a lot of fun. They just can't reach you.

Vampiric drain is pretty shit for multiple reasons but it is worth mentioning that is can be very effective against a group of enemies, you receive health from all of them at once, with the same cost of having siphoned only one enemy. Basically you get four or more people at once and it completely restores your health for little magicka, just cast it in a kind of back and forth sweep motion. In that situation it would actually be more effective than proper restoration spells.

Have you tryed: Fire cloak (or just any cloak) + Ebony mail + Become Ethereal shout Also become Ethereal shout is handy as you can uninterruptedly cast your master destruction spells.

That sounds OP

The only ones I had a use for used to be third tier direct attack (fireball etc.). Now I use the newer "elemental" spells in preference. The first tier direct attack (sparks etc.) were useless on their own, but OK when used along with low level 1h melee attack in the early game.

You can use fire bolt to shoot at runes and make a big fire explosion

I use enchantments more than magic, but flames and sparks are usually a last resort thing when I'm out if stamina or soul gems

shock runes are useful in dungeons with mages but the ranking is fair

Runes are actually very useful. They are aoe and for some Tod_Howard reason, they give enormous ammount of exp into destruction. I mean, how often early/mid game were you killed by some bonky-wonky great hammer dude with his sidekicks? Ofcourse you have ice storm, but it is lingering damage and it is often hard to actually hit the whole group of bad guys.

for vampiric drain, you didn't mention the levels of damage it does as you progress through vampirism effects.

Cloaks and Runes aren't bad. They just jave different functionality. You can't defeat enemies with only Runes 😅

base game, any rune spells are the best way legitimately to power level destruction, which i think should also be put into consideration when you think about using rune spells in your playthrough.

Cloaks: dual-cast after drinking Fortify Destruction potions for more AoE and damage, with AE: Mara's Wrath all the way Runes: use as setup in stealth with Silent Casting, if you have AE: Paralysis Rune is OP Walls: normally bad, but mix with Paralysis and surround a target with damage fields from two elements for high DoT Adept AoE: you can get enemies to cluster together from stealth with Magelight, maybe follow with a Frenzy

Actually, rune spells are useful for traps. If you play as a Nightblade, you can choose to use rune spells to lower an enemy health so you can kill them with a dagger or just straight up kill them with the rune

With the Blizzard and Fire storm destruction spells, you are supposed to cast them while you use the shout become aetheral, making them easily the best spells in the game for clump fights.

5:57 blizzard was preaty usefull for retraining destruction skill without running and attacking random enemies. You can just spam blizzard on yourself. 13:55 ignite was insanely op. due to ability to stack dot effect and the fact that there was the illusion perk that boost that dmg even more. But as you notice. you have to use ring.

Elemental blast is now just a fireball with tripple the damage

Master Destruction Spells are meant to be used with Become Ethereal Shout or Invisibility + Stealth

the master spells are incredibly good imo, they combined with the cloak spells and become ethereal is a pretty good combo. cast a cloak, go ethereal, charge a master spell. easy way to rid yourself of fodder

I was always fan of Lightning storm because unlike other master level destruction spells you could aim it against enemies like massive continuous Chain lightning.

Ice storm from enemies usually ducks me really good

i have to say, i agree on most of your positionings... i just think that the lighting storm is one of my fav, it's so fun to use... but yes, i understand... it technically sucks. 😅

can anyone tell me how many spells there are? everywhere i’ve looked gives different answers i wanna try to collect all the spells in the game but hard to do without some sort of check list

Arniel's convection is good for training destruction

Rune spells aren't meant for fights, they stay on the ground till triggered, for stealth and escape
