Hi, I am working on formation of hydrophobic coating which is composed of drying oil and naturally organic beeswax...so this coating consists of two different materials that is wax and oil as well so in which category does it comes under

this one sounds like it would come under fire resistant coatings more ?Most of these are Polyurethane so it would depend what formula you are adding to your beeswax and oil ?

@@ultrimaxcoatingsltd I am doing this project with my group, here we are using tung oil as a drying oil and butyl acetate as a solvent for that...and we are mainly focusing on making it water resistant and dirt resistant and since the beeswax has a good ability of anti-bacterial so it will result in forming a hydrophobic coating along with anti-bacterial properties and the drying oil are having great ability of sustaining high temperatures so somewhat it can act as a fire resistant too.

@@ultrimaxcoatingsltd Yes sir, so I just want to confirm if this coating can be categorised under polyurethane coating or in any other type of coating. I think it must come under Polyurethane coating because I have read the Indian standard specifications for the reference purpose and I got to know about polyurethane coating is classified into 5 types in which the first type described as Modified oil based coating. And a seperate specification is described about oil based coating which is composed of only drying oil. So after going through all these theories and specifications I think the coating is polyurethane coating, but after all I am a fresher to this concept so needed some guidance that's thought of speaking with you.

Do you guys work with any wood coating products that cure with UV lights?

I am experimenting with painting using a paint gun and starting to have some asthma like symptoms tonight and just found out the hardener I use could be the cause. I want to continue painting but I am overwhelmed with options all I want to do is paint mild steel in a satin black in 1 pass. I keep reading how dangerous epoxy paints are but it seems like oil based with hardeners can be worse. Is there anything that is low VOC that has a hardener and does not use isocyanates? The final product will be indoors. I cant afford powdercoating yet.

Use Durabak 18, a moisture-cured Polyurethane. Comes in solid colors, no custom color options. Hard as a rock, but flexible. Does not chalk, holds color well under weathering and UV. One of the best I have found. It can be roller brushed on (Mohair for the smooth paint, Textured roller for textured paint), or sprayed. Levels well, so ideal for roller brushing. Solvent used is Xylene. Sand down, wipe surface with Xylene, roller brush one coat, wait till finger dry, apply 2nd coat. Done. Be smart and use a mask when spraying.

hi there assuming your backboard is timber? if you look at something like Sayerlack AT99 which you can spray to mek a professional finish...but i'm pretty sure something like our Colormax Aerosols with Ultrimax 1 satin paint would produce a nice finish for you (the aerosols would also be fine if your backboard is wood, metal or plastic) hope that helps br Ultrimax

by far the most eco friendly is water based - it has far lower VOC and isocyanates in its composition.

if in the sun Rustoleum Noxyde - it has elasticisers in it that mean the intense heat won't cause it to fail when the coating is shrinking and expanding !

its not always a problem for example we sell a lot of sayerlack 2pk primer with a 1pk topcoat. The important item is keeping within system so if your primer is Jotun branded use Jotun branded topcoat as they are chemically made to work together

Can you use a acrylic primer on a polyurethane base coat?

yes definitely both - the epoxy stops the paint from flaking or peeling off

metal lathes will need a solid metal paint with anti-corrosive properties. Go either 2 pack for a slightly harder cured paint or 1 pack . We do 2pack in Ultrithane 31 - www.ultrimaxstore.com/paint/direct-to-metal/ultrithane-31-bs.-00a01.ipp310500a01

most paints have some acrylic in but does depend on the paint type. For concrete we'd always advise a full floor paint in 1k or 2k if you have the time to mix and paint as it will wear better.

How to combine epoxy and polyurethane coatings in one floor coating system?

they would possibly react currently so not advisable but if you could combine them and potentially mitigate some of the gloss created from the PU coating then it would be one very hard surface treatment !

To compare, Nitro Combi is a lacquer with high volume of solvent and some alkyd resin. It dries super quick with the volume of solvent, mainly used in graffiti art as you can paint and go! environment

@@SkodaFeliciaBMMkW hi if you have the mix then yes don't see why not as its still a solvent based product like most sprayed paints. Most spray cans have a spray gun style nozzle on them anyway (what are you trying to achieve?) and perhaps your main issue may be getting the product out f the can safely as it will be pressurised. @@ultrimaxcoatingsltd So alkyd resin is there to achieve some glossy finish (or plasticity?) and nitrocellulose is for hardness or what is the reason for such combination? Nitrocellulose lacquers have been used already beginning 20th century, do they have also some pitfalls? I thought nitro lacquers have been replaced by other chemicals in automotive industry already decades ago?

@@SkodaFeliciaBMMkW yes in short the alkyd and epoxy perform very well in marine situations or situations when atmospheric conditions might prevail. With your nitro it has a lot of solvent and solvent means quick drying which in general is very useful in the automotive industry - the pitfalls of solvent is mainly the VOC element and respiratory safety (make sure you are wearing the correct masks). IN general most industries are now moving to water based but there is still a lot of solvent first products out there it will still be a long time before water based takes over as the predominant paint type. kr Ultrimax Team

Isocynates ... "may cause asthma." I thought the main risk was leukemia? Hence the need for full body protection and respirator.

Jotun surface tolerant epoxies are NOT designed for smooth surfaces! Ideal prep is sandblasted but they can be applied over firm non flaky rust. Better over rust than a smooth surface!!!

I should've used the acrylic...instead of oil...damn!!

yes acrylic does tend to be a little harder than the oil based once set !
