When something like Furan reacts with dimethyl maleate, how do I know which pi bond is going to react?
@Leah4sci
2 ай бұрын
Furan is a symmetrical molecule and so either pi bond reacting would yield the same product

For the hydrohalogenation around the 17:30, why is it a hydride shift and not a methyl shift?
@jamespettinato9921
8 ай бұрын
think of it.
@jamespettinato9921
8 ай бұрын
if you do a methyl shift the carbocation will jump to carbon 2 and the methyl substitutent will be on carbon 3 thus the carbon cation will still be secondary. but doing the hydride shift the cabication will swap places with the hydride shift and now in this case the carbocation will be tertiary being connected to the carbon groups

Hydride shift is preferred over methyl shift. Always aim for H then alkyl group

For halogenation instead of it being CCl4 could it also be ROOR?
@Leah4sci
7 ай бұрын
CCl4 will give you the dark reaction with a carbocation intermediate following Markovnikov's rule while ROOR will give you the light reaction (radical) with an anti-markovnikov product
