Thank you Ty... I couldn't figure out for the life of me how to run this test with the test kit that I have... I may have to ditch the test kit and setup like you are...

How do you do the actual caluculation of the alkalinity after measuring the volyme needed to drop it to 4.5??

Yeah... I feel like this was not an alkalinity test, but a demonstration of what alkalinity is.

I agree! How do you read the alkalinity number after you are done with the test? Where did you get the 40-45 alkalinity number? Great Video, just need to clarify how you complete the test by getting your number!

so, if i try to somplify this explanation, alkalinity = relative amount of carbonate content in water?

Thanks for taking the time to make these videos. I’m curious if you could talk about the difference in testing Alkalinity in sea water vs potable water.

Hey Ryan, I'm assuming you mean "sea water"... like for a fish tank? The test itself would be the same to test alkalinity... having said that, all my experience and emphasis with my channel is on drinking water distribution or treatment. Having said that, much of the water we test is also raw water that had not been treated yet... granted all the plants I have worked at deal with surface water runoff or ground water. I've never worked at a desalination plant.

@@TheWaterSifu Yeah I was asking for a reef/saltwater tank. Looking to do more accurate testing. Hobby test kits are so so. Appreciate you taking the time to answer I know this is outside the scope of your channel. Hard to find people willing to share information on water testing.

My well water is 8 Ph... Ive been dropping it to 6.5 with Ph down! Now i see my cannabis plants are aLL turning Lime Green to Yellow! If i emmediately check the Run off from bottom of Plant pot, the ph is down to a 4 ph!?? And ive even tested on a fresh pot of mix by itself to check the run off, and its 4 ph also! -Im only using Promix BX general purpose mix... Can u suggest what i can do? I cant buy any fancy equip etc.... I got plants, mix and 8 ph well water... What would u suggest my Watering Ph should be? Thx Ps: Im only using a $5 bk water Ph test kit wth the dye drop's and a color chart! Now im just using strait 8 Ph well water, wthout bringing it down... The plants have slowwed there lightening up, but r still hurting....

Peter Neofotis it can be whatever as long as you can calculate for it. But most I know use 0.02N or 0.025N.

Gollapalli Gopalakrishna TNT 870 alkalinity is what we use once a week for full lab but most of the time it’s green-red. thiosulfate and sulfuric acid. Turns green to a red.

+Akira Shepherd Though I know you don't need and indicator since you have the pH meter but still! I can't find many modern videos with people speaking as clearly as you did here where they use an indicator.

All this showed was how to drop the pH with acid. You need a alkalinity PPM meter to test the alkalinity of water.

  • @gmwwc

When you know the amount of acid used to drop the pH to 4.6. The mls of acid (of a known strength) converts to the alkalinity. So yes, this is an alkalinity test.
