Alison's First Love Is a Hard Shell Taco | Home Movies with Alison Roman
Today’s Home Movie is about good vibes. It’s about cooking for friends and putting your hot sauce to work. It’s … TACO TUESDAY! We aren’t in Austin, this wasn’t filmed inside a Taco Bell (@Taco Bell, I would), and Lebron isn’t with us (@Lebron, you’re welcome any time) but we’re still very much enjoying crispy hard shell tacos. I’m toasting my shells for additional crunch and filling them with a classic beef picadillo-style situation (onion, garlic, spice, you get it). You can substitute beyond meat, chicken, turkey - whatever you like, just be sure to have plenty of toppings (this is the secret to hosting): cheese, shredded lettuce (shredduce), sour cream (for Dan!), and… hot sauce.
Thank you Maker’s Mark for sponsoring Home Movies this week!

"Lady on the internet" 😂😂❤❤
Thanks for spreading the praise for the hard shell Tex Mex Taco. Almost everyone I know loves these. As owner of an authentic Mexican restaurant who does "real" Mexican Tacos, I would not even think of putting them on the menu as they would discredit me as restaurant. My chef would flat out refuse to make them. Regardless, I make them at home with my family and am often nervous to be spotted with the Ol El Paso box in my basket at the grocer. Also, cheese on the bottom before the beef is my master technique....lol cheers, and great video.

David, Jesus. Of course you toast them.
My favourite part of these videos - besides the amazing recipes by Alison - is the behind the camera commentary 😂
The editing on your series is frankly incredible. Never comment but I had to tell you!
I put my crispy shells on an upside down muffin tin. Add cheese in bottom and broil in oven for a few seconds 😘
Literally called my mom and scheduled a hard shell taco night for tomorrow. Thank you home movies lol
I must say i love authentic tacos but hard shell American style tacos have a special place in my heart ❤ love this video

Just found your channel and so happy I did. Your attitude is whats missing in todays videos. Love it. Thank you!
My first name is Valentina so I take it as a compliment. Thanks Alison and you too!
This made my day, love a good old school crunchy taco. Thanks Alison!
Yes, I love a good ol hard shell taco. I love authentic ones too. This world has room for both & more tacos for everyone!
Thank you for now making de nada even more crowded than it already is. But also they deserve all of the hype because some of the best tacos (really best marg) in Austin. I go there weekly.
Thank you for being a trooper and giving us videos even though it seems that you were feeling under the weather ❤
Now I CANNOT wait for Alison on Hot Ones! (Also Cholula is my number one too!)
Love an old school crunchy taco w ground beef. Not everything needs to be an ultra authentic recipe!

It tastes good and is very nostalgic, but quite difficult to eat. The whole thing has a tendency to crack and fall apart. I like the corn flavor and crunch, but that's what nachos are for. A much easier delivery mechanism! There's a reason tacos are soft.

I grew up with hard shell tacos with ground beef and shredded iceberg. Then I moved to LA and turned my back on them in favor of street-style tacos in a soft corn tortilla. Now watching this I feel like it's time to give the hard shell taco another chance. I didn't realize how much I missed them until now...

Exactly what you said! Except I am from California and I had both. Now living in DC I miss California tacos, but also I miss those hard shell tacos my mommy use to make. Man iceberg… I miss it.
We always put a little ball of aluminum foil in each shell so they stay nice and open when baking!

“I had a big lunch”😂😂😂 I love hard shell tacos. I can’t wait to make these!!!
I love a hard shell taco❤. I use a taco stand and everything. And of course you have to heat them. No more than a few minutes in a hot oven. OMG I could talk about this all day. They don’t get enough love in my opinion, just because they are associated with Taco Bell. Thank you Alison😊

🎉 loving this episode As a “chef”- I have been shamed by even my dearest friends for having hard shell corn tortillas tucked away in my cabinet. Because there’s a time- and home is THE place - and in that time and place they are DEFINITELY exactly what’s needed. Yummm.

.. always put the cheese IN the shell to melt before toasting. The cheese stops the cracking situation (and top with sour cream for sourness and richness.)
This is why I like you, Alison! As a born and raised Angeleno, we don’t eat store-bought hard shell tacos. That said I secretly love hard shell tacos for when I make them at- home alone. My family would roast me for bringing hard shells to taco night. Someone has to suffer over the stove a fry the taco shells.
David's "oh wow" was my favorite moment ever. So wholesome
Memories of taco night as a kid… Definitely making these this week.
Omg this video solidified why I love your videos and recipes so much. I love crunchy tacos and we build them almost the same f’ing way lol. You had me at lots of lettuce and then putting the chopped onion on the meat plus some cheese so it melts a bit then the lettuce. I also like to add extra cheese on top. Can’t wait to try the mean recipe. Today will be taco Wednesday for me fs
So excited to see this hard shell home movie. Never thought it would be worthy of a home movie but there are many elements to making a hard shell taco! I used the tip on the Ortega box to fill the shells with the cooked meat and then put in oven, to make the shells a little softer. But many times didn't have time for that so just went with the shells right out of the box. I admit I also used the packaged taco mix seasoning on many occasions. This video brings me back to those days of making hard shell tacos for my kids. Thank you !
LOVE!! This is my go-to night with friends because for those who have specific dietary needs, they can choose what they want in their taco. Brown the meat (and meat alternatives) and lay out all the other toppings and everyone gets to choose their own adventure.
Love the bow Alison! That was my signature look for years, though I switched it up and stopped parting my hair down the middle at some point. It looks great on you, particularly with your red lip and classic hoops. This’ll be fun with tacos next Saturday. I usually make tacos or wraps or somesuch unless we order in. Thanks!
Thank you Alison! This MADE my birthday eve. YUMMMMMMMMMM
Yes! Shout out to ATX and De Nada! Can confirm those crunchy tacos are delicious. 😋
We had this for lunch today! We used the Old El Paso mix but your recipe was very easy. Think I will try it next time.

Hi Alison . Greetings from Miami . You inspired me to make tacos yesterday .I've been a foodie and cooking show watcher from bay back to Owen Wilson,The Galloping Gourmet,Julia Child etc. And I've never related to the style or personality of anyone like I have with you . I'm retired ,and on a budget ,so my tacos were almost Todo BOGO with ingredients from our local Publix- ground turkey , fresh mini-peppers,sour cream, jarred salsa, grated cheese, and crispy tacos ,all bought on BOGO. The onions were on sale ,and garlic from Aldi . One of the spices I used was " Pride of Szeged " chicken rub as I couldn't find my Spanish paprika. It turned out delicious. I didn't use lettuce because it's too expensive . Your bread crumbs for the chicken Ceasar wrap in your latest video were brilliant, and your Kentucky trip was excellent. You're a true inspiration and delight .
I'm totally doing that. so simple and no extra fuss. I always feel like to do more when i have friends over, but at the end of the day, there is no need. Loved it as always. Would love to send you my cookbook (Georgian recipes)
idk how you do it. this is absurdly simple and yet still endlessly entertaining. you just have that CHARM xoxo
Alison: “My body is feeling f-ing rough today” 😂
I was introduced to Mexican food via Taco Bell, became obsessed with Mexican culture and food (even living there for almost a year at point), and at some point, scoffed at my Taco Bell beginnings. But this video made me look back at it with so much fondness. 🌮🌮
so much David in this video! we want more!
My California stepson turned us on to these back in the 80's, when he was visiting. I always think of him when I eat this.

Yay!! This is wonderful! Even in Taco town LA, it’s fun to watch Alison makin hard Tacos in NYC- props to her dad for frying them, but ya, I don’t wanna so thank you for not. Cholula will always reign supreme ❤
I love those taco kits, next time I'm just getting the shells and adding the spices that Alison used instead of that packet. It was fun to see how she makes her tacos, such an iconic meal that I still love making. Plus its fun when everyone can just assemble their own, makes feeding people easier.
Watching this while eating hard shell tacos 😂
Loved this recipe, thanks. I always put the meat in the shells before toasting the shells. Adds some cohesion to the shell but it’s still crispy
We love street tacos and the kind of tacos you find at a taqueria attached to a gas station, but sometimes I crave an old-fashioned hard shell taco. We tried every joint in town. They all had hard shell tacos, but they weren’t the Americanized version I wanted. So I went to Del Taco and was satisfied. Now, when that occasional craving hits, we will try it your way. Thank goodness I did not have to stoop to Jack in the Box tacos. Fyi, I grew up in Tarzana and for many years after leaving home, wished I had a Pup’n’Taco to go to. Have no idea when that franchise bit the dust, but at Reseda and Ventura … roughly … that is where it stood. Great video, Alison!
Brings me back to childhood! I love this. I’d probably use some tostadas and put the taco meat and other toppings on a layer of refried (brothy? LOL) beans so nothing flies off 😂
I was really surprised that this was your go-to taco but now I want one. Also Choulula is my favorite hot sauce. I usually have 3-4 versions of it at any one time.
This is awesome. This is close to how I do a ground beef taco, but I do add a little corn starch to the water to make a bit of a sauce.
Love it ! I always put tomatoes in mine
Yes! I feel like hard shell tacos don't get enough love.
Thanks for the tip on adding the water to the taco meat! I did it without knowing why and now I do.

He's a great guy, you can tell from his energy. We need more people like that in this world.
A tip when toasting the taco shells I stand them in a wire rack and add shredded cheese to the bottom of the shell so they don’t crack at the and all the filling falls.
I love this video!
16:26 real. I’m the baby that makes tacos a lot. But the best way to get the meat is a offset thin spatula. Like for icing stuff. Scoop some meat in and slide it in.
alison ! thank for the recipe, could you maybe one day film a tour of your fridge & pantry condiments ? i'm european so i couldn't get most of them but it would be interesting to see :) thanks so much, learning a lot from your videos
I am all in on the hard tacos!
Used to live within walking distance of the old Henry's Tacos on the corner of Tujunga and Moorpark in Studio City. Best hardshell tacos and tostadas ever -- with super hot sauce. Was there much more often than just Tuesday. First I moved. Then it moved 1/2 block south. Now it's gone. Boo! But La Luz Del Dia is still churning out beautiful carnitas down on Olvera Street -- another 50+ year old favourite. One of the problems of aging is that your childhood haunts start disappearing. Linney's and Blum's and Ontra are gone from BH. Butterfield's is gone. Ship's is gone. Plenty of others. Boo!
Ok you have just sent me back to my childhood. I loved taco night, and it looked exactly like this! Except chopped tomatoes.
🎶White people taco night🎶 ... and I'm here for it!
Too funny I'm having tacos tonight. I swear we are Virgo twins. 😂😂😂
Love hard shell tacos
Love it!
Can always appreciate a friend who says "Honestly, don't know why I said that"
I am so grateful to you for explaining why you add water in the recipe, it makes such a huge difference. knowing this one piece of information will help me forever with my cooking. My only comment that is slightly negative about this recipe is if you cook the taco shells in the toaster oven it will burn if you do it at 450 for 6 minutes. I suggest a lower temperature. I haven't figured out the right temperature and time yet. I ended up throwing away 6 taco shells because they burned quickly in my toaster oven. other than that this recipe is perfection. thank you.
I kneeeew you had to be a hard taco girl!!! That's all I eat. Soft is cute sometimes, but crunchy is just ICONIC!
Decades ago my mother bought a metal taco shaper that you lowered into oil to fry the corn tortilla. Fresh is best. I fill my taco in reverse. The lighter weight ingredients don’t fall out when topped with taco meat.

I have one of those ... that I never use, lol. I like frying the tortillas flat (easier) for tostadas.
Love these tacos. I add chopped tomatoes to the toppings, but that's just me. I live life on the edge. To anyone making more than one at a time invest in a taco holder stand. If you're having a hard time keeping the shells together, try the mini shells. Love the ribbon. It adds a certain "je ne sais quoi".

This is a staple from my childhood, and I still make them today. I am in the ground cumin camp and I think it is the most essential spice. I always thought most people thought chili powder was the most important, so I am a little shocked she didn't use any.
This was a great recipe and has inspired me to make my own taco seasoning instead of the premade stuff! The only thing I was missing was the tomato! Even throwing it into the meat adds some body and moisture, and it's more veggies!
Totally a mom/family meal, thanks Alison and Team😘 You are all AMAZING!

At the Taco Bell capital, I always pick hard shell tacos. Love the crunch!!!!
1) Ignore the food police. 2) Chohula is one of my favorite hot sauces too. 3) Sour cream mixed with a fresh store-bought salsa is yummy on tacos ... better than plain sour cream.
