Alison Krauss & Union Station - The Boy Who Wouldn't Hoe Corn (Lyrics)

Alison Krauss and Union Station - The boy Who Whouldn't hoe corn.
I don't own the music.
Lyrics:
Tell You a little story and it won't take long,
'Bout a lazy farmer who wouldn't hoe his corn.
The reason why I never could tell,
That young man was always well.
He planted his corn in the month of June.
By July it was up to his eyes.
Come September, came a big frost.
And all the young man's corn was lost.
His story, kith, had just begun.
Said: "Young man, have you hoed some corn?"
"Well I tried and I tried, and I tried in vain.
"But I don't believe I raised no grain."
He went down town to his neighbour's door.
Where he had often been before.
Sayin': "Pretty little miss, will you marry me?"
"Little miss what do you say?"
"Why do you come for me to wed?
"You, can't even make your own corn grain.
"Single I am, and will remain.
"A lazy man, I won't maintain."
He turned his back and walked away.
Sayin: "Little miss, you'll rue the day.
"You'll rue the day that you were born.
"For givin' me the devil 'cos I wouldn't hoe corn."...

This song illustrates that there is no profit from laziness and procrastination. The refusal of the young lady to marry him and having to support him was correct.

Great reply. Thanks. I heard this song several years ago, and it stuck to me. Is the "hoeing corn" symbolic of something, like obligations and personal responsibility? And where is there frost in September? Not in the corn belt. Hoeing corn disturbs the "feeder" roots.

I disagree… to me it’s more about hell with the people that expect you to be something you’re not. Love is more important than being this or that. The boy clearly wants more than just being a farmer and he will make the woman regret throwing him away for not being one. It shines a light on the simpleminded nature of a lot of folks where I’m from… we rely on coal mining and I worked many years underground but eventually decided I wanted more… and more doesn’t always mean more money or material success… miners make 6 figures these days around here. I decided I wanted a life that stands above money and material things.

@@RyanStarr-bn9dv I think you're wrong. In the beginning of the song the farmer is portraited as lazy.
