Aligning a Contractor Saw with the PALS

A Table saw must be in proper alignment to operate safely and efficiently. A Contractor saw can be extremely difficult to get into alignment when done the "conventional" way. In this video, Jerry Cole of In-Line Industries demonstrates how the procedure is performed with the PALS kit. Instead of taking hours to get close, the entire procedure takes less than 10 minutes to get the saw perfectly aligned.

I have had my PALS since you began selling them years ago. I seldom need to adjust on my old Craftsman Contractor saw. I check about 2x's/yr for alignment. Thanks Jerry for an outstanding, inexpensive product that works!

My old Delta/Rockwell contractor saw needed a trunnion adjustment. I watched this video and a few more. Loosened 2 bolts, a few light taps with a hammer and then measured the blade. Straight as an arrow and it fixed my problem.

The "pivoting" was achieved buy putting a "sized-hardwood" sleeve around just "one" of the front bolts to "fill the gap" in the trunion hole. Then loosen both the front bolts VERY slightly. Then do the adjusting on the rear, either using trial and error without a gauge; or, of course, using the gauge; which would be MUCH better I am sure. Don't forget to tighten the front bolts firmly; while checking the results; AFTER the rear trunion is brought into alignment.. Thanks again Jerry

I recently purchased the PALS and the A-LINE-IT dial indicator from Amazon but before I say anything else I would like to add that my table blade was out of alignment from front to back by almost 1/2 an inch. I own a Grizzly 1022Z that was bought new back a few years and I guess over the years I was making small adjustments to the rip fence that I never really noticed. I also found that the front two trunnion mounting bolts were lose. Before using the PALS and A-LINE-IT, my entire trunnion blade mount, front and back, including the blade carrier unit, was completely removed from the saw. It was cleaned, re-lubricated, and re-assembled. No easy task since this was done while the saw was upright. Once reassembled, and once I figured out which way to move the adjustment screws on the PALS, the alignment went fairly quickly. The instructions that came with the A-LINE-IT were very good and I watched the video above probably ten times before doing the "tune-up". The only thing I might add is more diagrams to go along with the instructions to facilitate and ease the setup and the install and adjusting of the PALS. Other than that, a very good product. In addition to the above, a new blade was installed (before adjusts), a blade stabilizer was added and I finally put on a zero clearance table insert. I'm very pleased with the outcome and my saw has never been better.

Great system and idea for alignment, I ordered The PALs system, the two pulleys, link belt and the A-Line-It Gauge Deluxe for my 1983 Sears Craftsman TableSaw. All instructions and videos are great and well done I must say and the quality of the products are fantastic! First a little history I purchased this saw new and I’m the only one who have ever used it and the condition I would rate at 80% I just want to update it every thing I could, Incra Fence system, Incra Miter, Bora Mobil base, Ridge Blade, Pulleys, Link belt, PALS system and alignment to saw done. All went well BUT luckily I am fussy take my time and double check everything I am a great woodworker and mechanic so while checking the new belt running with the blade down I was checking the clearances of the belt, pulleys then starting to raise up the blade all looked good, I was going to check it with the blade in the bevel position so I turned off the saw I raised the blade all the way up and was going to start to move it to bevel but decided to take one more look underneath! That’s when I noticed a problem with the belt hitting the “PALS Bolt locknut” and the Arbor Pulley the “Belt is Rubbing” the bottom of the top because of the way a link belt rides high on the pulley a V belt doesn’t and the pulley on the arbor is the same as the old one “original “ I was lucky and saw this before I had the saw running with the blade raised all the way up my saw 3-3/8” after contact with Jerry he said his saw blade only raises 3-1/8”? If I put my saw at 3-1/8” I’m good anything over I will most likely rip the belt apart great for I-Line bad for Me so be careful and check your clearance. Jerry said he has never seen this before but now he has! Perry

I am impressed Jerry. But I am concerned about something. Since you are ONLY moving the "rear" trunion, I have had problems in the past where I got the blade "dead on" using trial and error without a gauge as you show; BUT the "tilting" of the saw became harder. So I modified the "front" trunion to allow it to "Pivot" as "ONE" unit. This solved the problem. I will buy your product and try it, in any case. As always at the "shows" your demos are excellent dear friend, patdee

Hi Jerry, My 1980's vintage Craftsman 10" T.S. needed to be modified to allow the miter to extend the full 45 deg. I had to replace the original stud and nuts provided in the kit with a standard shallow head bolt on this one side. I removed the blade guard and removed its mounting horn after marking where the bolt head touched and used the bench grinder to take some aluminum off to provide the needed clearance. Now my saw makes the full 45 deg. swing! The other option is to remove the blade guard altogether.

Hi Jerry. I just ordered the pals from reading on the net, then found this video. I was under the impression these things not only aligned the blade at 90º but also at 45º, yet I didn't see you mention anything about it. I have spent many hours tightening and loosening my trunnion bolts with tap tap here and a tappity tap there, getting the blade damn near perfect, then tilting blade for a measurement and finding it quite a few thousandths out. Please, what say you???

These need some help to work properly with a Ridgid 4512 but they do work. 1. you will need some new bolts. an M10-1.5 35 MM will work (the stock bolts are a hair too short at 30 MM. 2. You will need to grind a bit off of the trunnion about 1/8th of an inch or so on each end. (this requires removing the trunnion completely from the saw, so you will also need something to keep the motor from falling). 3. Once you have done this the install works just like the video (you will be totally re-aligning the saw as part of the install). Also the folks at In-Line have great customer service and will go out of their way to ensure happy customers. Highly recommended.

I have a Craftsman 113 table saw and am having a heck of a time getting the blade square with the miter slots. The PALS system seems like it would be a great benefit in getting correct alignment. I have a question and it doesn't seem to be addressed in the video. My saw has 4 bolts that hold the trunnion to the table top, 2 in the front, 2 in the back. The bolts that do not have PALS on them, are they loosened at all? Surely they don't stay tight while trying to align the blade?

@ herbsu43 My sears has 6 bolts total as well and I loosened all 6 and finger tightened them all to get my alignment within 6 thousandths. Then I would tighten the front and back middle bolts a little bit then used the PALS to get the alignment closer and then tighten the 2 bolts without the PALS up a little bit and recheck. Then tighten the nuts up and recheck alignment. Took me about an hour, and it was worth it.

I did follow all the instructions given and can't get it to lined up. I even try lossen the front and nope didn't work. Is like if i need more play on the bolt holes. Please any help would be appreciated greatly. Thank you.
