Great review, appreciate the take on value considering the market price of GPUs at the moment. You should consider grabbing some fans to replace the one ones. Do a push pull on the radiator and replace the front intakes. Arctic p12 pwm pst are $8 a pop for a better experience across the board and much quieter.

Nice - i just ordered an R12 with the EOFY sale - 1.5k off retail (AU). Big fan of Alienware - I bought a stupidly high specced 18inch laptop back in 2013 and it's still going strong to this day. Never had so much reliability from a computer or had one last as long. Got the new R12 with the i7 and 3080 too, so I'm glad that was in your recommendation.

Thank you for the review! Indeed the rtx 3090 may cost not far away from the entire alienware machine. It might be a reason to buy Alienware with 3090s, or 3080s, and in some case scenarios it can even save your money. Depends from the country where you live. As for Ukraine - 3080 GPU is on the same price line with an Alienware 3080 inside.

make sure you downlwnload msi afterburner or you will burn the thermal paste of the cards that comes with Alienware. create a custom fan curve when you play games. Their GPU's are custom made for that case and overheat very quickly

Amazing review. I was going for an x17 with 11700h and rtx 3080 with 4k display and switched my order to the r12 with 11900f and 3080 with 32gb ram and 1tb ssd. It wasn't too bad especially after discounts and will pair nicely with the aw2721d qhd monitor. I wish they offered the liquid cooled gpu like the rtx 2000 series for no noise at all. I think this will perform amazing on ultra settings with the qhd panel.

I'm actually debating on either a dual 32 monitor set up one being the aorus fi32q and the other being the aorus fi32u that way it is seamless and will match the darkside of the moon aurora R12. I've also considered doing the aorus f127q and pairing with the aorua fv43u hdr1000 so I can use with my consoles and have amazing hdr. What do you think?

@@JustinTechTips It did indeed. The specs I chose were the fastest cpu (I forget what clock speed but the highest), a 3080 graphics card, 1000watt psu. I opted for the liquid cooled cpu option, so stoked.

@@NAMESOFNAMES I don’t know much about computers like that but I feel like the default overclocking should be fine but if you’re doing a custom one that’s where you should watch out the most.

Great review. With regards to the fan noise, there's a few videos on youtube and instructions from Dell on how to change the fan settings, so that they're virtually silent with normal use. I don't think it will make much difference with intensive use, but it does help. I think the suggestion of going with a 3080 graphics card to save on costs is a good one, as it's generally acknowledged that the performance difference between the 3080 and 3090 for gaming alone isn't much different. It's only worth the extra money if the card is going to be used for professional use. Personally I'm going for the 3080, and using the difference to get a new monitor. I've also noticed that you can get some very good discounts if you use a discount code app when checking out. Another good tip that I've heard about, is that Dell give away points from every purchase, which can essentially be used towards their keyboards and mice.

Great choice on getting a nice monitor with your savings by going with the 3080! Yeah I’ll have to look into those fan settings. When I let the computer choose the settings it still never got too hot but also wasn’t very loud. It’s when I manually set the fans to the Max as a test that it sounded insane! Great to know they’re that powerful though!

Hey Jacob, that's a great question and unfortunately that is the case. Regular sized 30 series graphics cards will not fit in this case 🙁 I guess that's the biggest trade off when buying a computer that costs about the same price as the graphics card does alone

Hey Arcto, there are some creative ways to undervolt that may prevent crashing over 5 GHz but I haven't tested that out. Did you get the fan version or the water cooled version?

Yeah No Sympathy, if you replace the default RAM you will get significantly higher speeds. make sure to get x8 Dual rank RAM though

I’ve NEVER bought a pc before and I have minimal knowledge on the subject. I want to buy a pc which can run games like fortnite on 100fps and that I can manage work on. Availability is not great in the UK but I have my eyes on the Alienware Aurora R12 (the cheapest i5 one). Is it over expensive for my needs or should I opt for something cheaper and less powerful? I also saw that it only has a 256GB SSD so is that enough or would I have to upgrade it?

Hey Toby, yes an i5 Alienware will still be powerful enough for fortnite. I'm not 100% sure if it will get 100fps since I haven't tested that version yet. You don't need a 1TB SSD for gaming and working but I would get the option that has at least a 1 TB regular non SSD hard drive

Also if you could do it again, would you rather go with a corsair pre built? It seems that almost every r10,11,12 builds have added thermal paste to the 3080 and replaced stock fans and added one additional? Def got on order with an 11900f liquid cooled cpuan rtx 3080 32gb ram 1tbssd for 2500 after discount from dell so I can complain about the price,warranty and instant customer service. But I am worried about the fan noise as most pc builds I've seen have been quiet.

Very nice review and I hope you're still enjoying your system. I'm sure you've heard this many times already but your Timespy score is very low for a 3090. I have the R11 with a 10900K along with the 3090 and my Timespy scores are above 18,000. It makes me wonder if you have some settings altered in the Nvidia Control Panel that is causing you to have a low score? I know our cores and threads are different but you should still have much higher results. The Forza framerates are low. You should be over 100 fps with all settings maxed @4k. Tomb Raider is definitely above 70 fps. Your Cyberpunk frames will depend on the DLSS settings. It is absolutely crazy how the prices have increased since 2020.

If you can wait you’ll get a lot of credits from Dell for your large purchase and you can basically pay for the fancy keyboard with those points. Other than that yeah, you’ve got a really good build and 3080 isn’t as fast as 3090 but for how much more the 3090 is than the 3080, it’s almost not worth it to get the 3090 since it’s not a huge leap in performance from the 3080

I love Alienware I'm about to get a computer like that soon!

yeah you got a really good machine also. On paper this one is way faster, but my machine specifically is having some weird bottlenecking issues

Hey McKnightster, honestly the 3090 on the aurora isn't the real 3090 but a scaled down version. I absolutely love the x17 as I prefer laptops and its cooling system is amazing. I would definitely go with that one as the Aurora R12 does get hotter and probably wont last as long as the x17

4:05. There is unfortunately something seriously wrong with the 3090 performance in this machine. If you go to Tom's Hardware review, for Forza 4 on 4k ultra, it shows 158 fps (only 78 here!). Guru 3d shows a 90+ fps for that particular Tomb Raider (71 here). The other games are a mixed bag of being close to "normal" and way off. It sucks, because I was leaning towards buying this, but I'm not going to if the GPU throttles to 60-70% its normal performance.

1080p will run slightly worse than it should with a 3080/3090 the mobo doesn't use enough channels . you'll get full power with 4k . its an odd problem to have and they really should of updated the mobo design for the intel cpu

I got the I7 unlocked version with liquid cooling and the 3080 and it's a beast. I have upgarded the fans to the Noctua for less noise and better cooling.

These are excellent PCs just you need to have some technical knowledge about what it is you're ordering. There are better configs and worse ones. Almost always go for the AiO watercooling, otherwise forget overclocking and don't whinge if it thermal throttles a bit.

Very informative video. I have an Alienware Aurora R8 with a 2080ti OC GPU. I maxed out the options, and it cost me 4,200 dollars, after a 90 dollar discount, in June of 2020. Didn't order the keyboard or mouse. I rate it a 10/10. Just wish that DELL offered a trade-in program so I could upgrade it to an R12. Mine is whisper quiet until I play intensive, demanding games. My Alienware 38" curved monitor is the icing on the cake.

Yeah the R13 is way better than the R12. Definitely worth it to go for that one instead

Hi Justin, how about PCIe Slots, any 4.0 free in there as I need an 10 GbE NIC? Does Alienware have any other competitors? I like the fact of the number of USB ports and customization level as I also seek 7x24x4 (or same day) onsite service on this unit.

Hey LuMi Naire. The Corsair One i64 and the MSI Trident X are some pcs that are similar competing desktops with the Alienware Auorora series

Alienware - Aurora R12 Gaming Desktop - Intel Core i9 - 32GB Memory - NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 Great pc but runs HOT !!!!!!!!! I was at Best Buy today and saw this pc not doing anything but idling and it was at at 80C. I showed it to the Best Buy store associate and he was amazed , but also knew these Alienware pc all run HOT. That is TERRIBLE !!!!! And here is what is worse, that was the WATER COOLED cpu version, so imagine how HOT the cpu cooled by air will be. $2800 for and easy-bake oven, So basically, it will thermal throttle to protect itself form heat damage , and the consumer will not get the full benefit of performance for the money that they paid for.

@@JustinTechTips That's cool and all but it doesnt seem like great value. Feel like you would be getting much better performance at the same price if you would have built your own pc or gone with a more reputable prebuilt brand

Hey Will, so you're probably looking into the R10 version?

3D Mark score on Alienware is 15331 while avarage score with RTX 3090 and same processor is 16976 as shown in this video. This means Alienware is UNDERPERFORMING 10%, which is most likely due terrible airflow in that case. You don't need to be scientist to see that the air is not moving in that plastic coffin. This causes underperforming, terrible fan noice (My wife got scared and asked whats going on while I watched this video. :D), and sudden crashes under heavier loads as you experienced. Yes, the case looks nice, but it is actually really terrible design, and terribly overpriced for the actual performance. I wonder did you really not see this, or have you not completely disclosed your collaborations.

Hey Leevi, no relationships with Alienware here. At the time I made this, the RTX 3090 alone was just about the same price as this whole computer was so a weaker performance with it's custom smaller sized version of the 3090 in this case didn't seem like a huge deal to me. Really used to laptop speeds on this channel so it did feel a bit quicker than what I was used to.

love your reviews, my rtx 3080 i9 m17 r4 came in in last week and love it!, but curious why forza, cyberpunk and shadow of the tomb raider dont have much frame difference from 1080 and 4k? seems really off

I’m guessing that since those games are such intensive graphics games that at 1080p they use more antialiasing to hide jagged pixels on the edges of all the geometry, and then at 4K it doesn’t have to do as much intense antialiasing because the pixels are already so small that you don’t see any jaggies.

@@JustinTechTips i installed shadow of the tomb raider on my m17 r4 with the 3080 a few days ago and it benchmarked a 135 fps, the highest recorded benchmark for that game from a laptop is the MSI GE76 with a 138. your 3090 here seems to be doing something fishy in these benchmarks

Hey icypole are hold off until I review the R13 in a few weeks. It's supposed to be way better than the R12. I'm not sure if there was something wrong with my R12, but it should have performed better.

Gonna order one with a 3070 soon, should I go for liquid cooling if my budget allows? My friends have told me horror stories of liquid cooling gone wrong so I'm not too sure. I also don't know the differences in terms of heat between the 70 and 90.

Hey GLOWSS my liquid cooled one didn’t get too hot but it didn’t perform as well as I thought it would for a 3090. Just recently after the Alienware x17 was released and I’ve had the chance to try it out.. I actually recommend that rather this desktop. kzread.info/dash/bejne/anh7taV_ZpDYg7Q.html

Do you need to replace the water in the liquid cooling I don’t know much about PC’s but I asked my friend and he said that you have to change it regularly

Hey alberto, sorry for the late reply. No it doesn't have to say sold by Alienware. They are just Amazon resellers.

Won't you need to increase the voltage when overclocking? 0.25v for every 100mhz as a rough guide Apparantly.

Yeah the Alienware Command Center automatically increases the voltage when you Overclock it but it can be raised if lowered passed that based on what works best for you

Man, I kinda regret getting a Razer set for board and mouse now that I've seen your video, for some reason I couldn't find if they had some alienwares on the website to go with my R12 and AW2721D monitor. Oh well, they are still awesome and will fit with my Dark Side of the Moon chassis, plus I always loved Razer stuff. Can't wait to get my R12 now ^^

My temperatures with the liquid cooled CPU never got hot enough to even use the fans to their Max. So I personally don’t think it’s necessary to get better fans unless you are looking for them to be quieter. For me they weren’t loud enough to need replacements

Yeah I would only replace them if the noise bothers you. Because thermals haven’t really been an issue with my liquid cooled version

Nice review. I have been gaming with an Omen...1070 with i7 7700. A used R12 is available nearby. 3090... tho only i5 11600... and only 8g ram. $1300. Seems a no brainer... yes? Oh... seems CPU water cooled as it has the cover with 2 tubes off of it. Curious... easy to upgrade the CPU? Worth it? Thanks!

i want that rig my question is can i take my evo 970 and all my other storage files and put it in the new cp. are there 2 spots for m.2 dont want to have to back up all of my stuff from the current cp .just want to transfer every thing over to the new cp by putting my ssd and 1 tb sata drive. in the r12 without backing everything up. i also have 2 16gb sticks that i can put in there. is that possible. thanks for any info

Hey Richard, you would need a PCIe adapter to connect a second M.2 SSD to the motherboard in the R12 as the default SSD is the boot drive.
