    As an engineer, grown men in his 40s who lost his father, I love older men (Ben talks at 37:00) talking about life, using his experience and wisdom to give lessons of not take life so serious sometimes, reminds me of my father who was happy when I told him my happiest moments in collage were when I wasn't studying my butt off, although the money I earn now is BECAUSE I study my butt off. Deep Blue was still in the opening book when it played nxe6. Kasparov may well have been right in thinking that the computer on it's own wouldn't have played the sacrifice. The great irony is that the decisive moment in the battle between humanity and the computer was actually determined by the theoretical understanding of the grandmaster who programmed Deep Blue's opening book.

    Doing some Lichess opening analysis (Lichess players), the response by black has the following statistics: (1) move, % win white, avg match rating, match count (2) nbd7, 56%, 2129, 21k (3) Bg4, 82%, 1884, 16k (4) e6, 57%, 2107, 15k (5) Bf5, 54%, 2162, 8k (6) Be6, 54%, 2122, 5k (7) Kg8, 56%, 2054, 4.5k All matches: 76k played with 62% win rate at an average of 2069 rating. Not bad, not bad. To be fair, black had a very high win rate when considering only top matches. It showed 4 matches with a 0% win rate for white. Note also that these are Lichess ratings. The meet up point is around 2100-2,200 rating (same on both). Below that, Lichess ratings are higher than chessc ratings for the same skill. Above that, the reverse. So a 1200 on chessc might be a 1500 on Lichess. Not exactly sure of the numbers other than that inflection point around 2100-2200.

    Ben - you are so true about naming openings after famous people. I played so called Alien gambit 20+ years ago even in correspondence and even last year on board 1 in 2 games in Latvian national team championship in rapid chess scoring 2/2, but no one gave it a reasonable name except vairis' crazy sacrifice until the Alien made video even as a chess player he is weaker than me (my top FIDE ELO was 2389) and I am correspondence GM since 2001 - so the variation got his name and that's kind of fine what I hate - he pretends he invented the opening that I play for 20+ years.

    You should have named it, then, and made it popular enough to catch on. But you didn't, while he did. So he gets the naming rights. You could invent limitless free energy, but if no one ever finds out about it, it will be as if you never did it.

    22:06 Yes, the Cochrane Gambit in the Petrov/Russian (3.Nxe5 d6 4.Nxf7!?) is significantly better according to Stockfish (only about -0.7 instead of -1.4), although the Alien Gambit scores a bit better for White. Meaning that the Cochrane Gambit requires White to know a bit what they're doing -- Black amateurs will usually blunder there too, but it's less straightforward how to exploit their mistakes. I checked Stockfish and the Lichess DB and you can also try Nxf7 against the Stafford Gambit 3...Nc6!?, but again you should know what you're doing, and I suggest just learning how to defend the Stafford and get a nice +2 position.

  • @beeble2003

    @beeble2003

    Ай бұрын

    What's the goal of that? It still gives a big advantage to people who know more theory, and it likely means that people play worse chess because they get forced into positions that don't match their playing style.

  • @jeffreyfisher3115

    @jeffreyfisher3115

    Ай бұрын

    @@beeble2003 An exercise in playing master-level positions that the players wouldn't normally reach. Enough moves in, it's the fringe of theory and less advantage to a player who is lucky enough to be booked up in an esoteric position. It may be tough to say a position is balanced, but one could use an engine to estimate balance and use the position if the balance is good enough. If the players play 2 games of the same starting position, switching colors, imbalance is minimized.

  • @beeble2003

    @beeble2003

    Ай бұрын

    @@jeffreyfisher3115 That still doesn't quite work. Engines don't currently detect whether a position is balanced. All they say is "If both sides play perfectly, the game's a draw," but that doesn't distinguish between situations where one side can play basically anything but the other has to find the one correct defensive move every time. And playing with both colours doesn't fix that, as the player who plays the "only-move" side second has the benefit of seeing the other player's mistakes in that position.

    It's not just that people play bad for these unsound openings, as you pointed out the vast majority of players aren't strong and the bad moves are the most popular moves. That's what makes some of these unsound openings strong, you are likely to walk into opponents who will fall to the traps. For example, in your first illustration of a bad move/blunder in the alien gambit, there are 15,720 games where Bg4 was played (21% of games in that position). I think its a little disingenuous to insinuate that some chess guides are showing favourable moves to make the gambit seem good. They are showing realistic popular traps people will fall into for regular players like myself.
