Isnt that like suppose prometheus its just the name for a ship? ;) "best known as the deity in Greek mythology who was the creator of mankind and its greatest benefactor, who stole fire from Mount Olympus and gave it to mankind. Ancient myths and legends relate at least four versions of the narratives describing Prometheus, his exploits with Zeus, and his eternal punishment as also inflicted by Zeus. There is a single somewhat comprehensive version of the birth of Prometheus and several variant versions of his subjection to eternal suffering at the will of Zeus."

As Shaw in chrome sleep, David learned and knew that the engineers have no compassion, they create and destroy as they like, thinking they are gods. Knowing this and engineer will sure butchered her when arrived, David unleash Black Death?

I felt that David was always more motivated by endless curiosity, that he's not restrained by morals or ethics to discover new things. David doesn't seem like the type to be moved on impulse by emotion, but rather instead curiosity. I think he killed the engineers as both a favor to Shaw as well as his own curiosity to see or make his own creation, just like the engineers who so fascinated him.

I believe David destroyed this civilization while Shaw was still asleep, she possibly awoke as David was dropping the goo bombs on these people, she runs to the captains chair and attempts to leave, her and David fight and she ends up crashing the ship, she is wounded badly and dying, David then tries to save her but realizes its too late and figures that the only way to keep her alive is by using the black goo on her, perhaps he uses a modified version of it on her. She possibly becomes the protomorph quen that lays the eggs. In Prometheus Shaw said she couldn't bare children yet gave birth to that giant face hugger that created the deacon Alien. I am 80% certain she does turn into some kind of monster in the film though.

+Martin Blom Yep, I truly believe Shaw crashes it somehow, it wouldn't make any sense for David to crash the ship himself, possibly killing himself and never experimenting with the Black goo. Aside from that, I also believe that Walter kills David in this film. After Weyland died, David became free, Walter is solely programmed to help his crew. He will help them even if it meant killing David.

A galaxy spanning civilization would be able to survive the lose of their home world, which looks very underdeveloped for a race as old as the Engineers are supposed to be. I think it looks like the Engineers of this world suffered some sort of social/economic collapse and were working their way back, look at the crudeness of their clothes and they don't look like the Engineers from Prometheus.

Maybe David, seeing himself as a superior being (or God) decided to create his own species. Through releasing the black goo on the race below he is now the creator of new life. The definition of a god. So perhaps he was apathetic about the species below, and his expression was the weighty expression of becoming a god.

David just made what he learned... The problem is that everything that he learned was mostly by Weyland... Weyland "killed" his gods by becoming a god, creating something similar to himself and then feel free to belittle it to prove to its creator that he does not need them at all. David did just the same, Only that he also kills the creator of its creator, becoming even greater to the eyes of... ?¿?¿universe?

A better question is "HOW did David kill the Engineers?" This ship David is on is 2000 years out of date. This would be like a Roman centurion using a chariot and a gladius to wipe out 21st century Earth. And there's no way the Engineers would allow a biological-warfare ship to approach their planet, let alone land, especially one that isn't responding to their hails. Also, the only way David could exterminate their entire race is if ALL the Engineers just happened to be at home at the same time. That is literally impossible with a space-faring race that is constantly exploring the galaxy and seeding planets.

So far my thoughts are that David, after learning all he could about the Engineers, comes to the realization that they are not superior and neither are their creations. It is likely the humanoids he bombs are creations of the Engineers who did not reject their creators like humanity did. David, seeing an opportunity to test the black goo, took it upon himself to wipe this planet clean and start a new. My theory is after this he goes ape shit and sees no organic life as god-like in nature and attempts to find a way to replicate killing machines (xenomorphs) that were likely used in the civil war between the Engineer factions. There is likely some form of documentation that exists in the Engineer knowledge about xenomorph type creatures and how to make a bio-mechanical killing machine. He may send the whereabouts of that planet back to earth to "invite" a group of humans to this planet so he can fully test and perfect his creation. It's likely David did not actually create the xenomorph or come up with the idea but instead is attempting to replicate the steps of creating such an organism from the Engineer knowledge he gained.

I think that David was putting Shaws safety first since he did mention that Shaw was the only one that shows that compassion and with what he learn from the ship leaves him no choice but to eliminate all the engineers. I also think that he did not wake up Shaw even after he eliminated the engineers. Then when the covenant crew arrive that is when they will discover Shaw on cryo sleep and wake her up.

I agree with many of your points. I believe that these engineers were war like and xenophobic and were bent on destroying "imperfect" versions of themselves created by their ancestors. I think David learned that during his time alone, and decided to destroy them in order to protect Shaw because he developed feelings for her.

I think that David read what the Destroyer faction of the Engineers did (destroy entire planets?). He decided to attack the Engineer homeworld although it seems that the victims were actually part of the Creators faction of the Engineers. The Destroyers planned to destroy humanity and possibly have destroyed worlds with their black goo. David found out that the Engineers are worse than humans.

I'm going to guess the line "to create you must destroy" has more to do with davids actions than we could know now. I believe he learned what the engineers were like, and read about the black goo. it's possible that he decided that he didn't care for them, and that he could replace them with new life, so that when Shaw awoke from her stasis (david would still be around too) new life would exist and as such, everything would be ok. this however leaves us with a problem. if Shaw were to be left in stasis, what made david pull her out of said stasis, and where is she now?

Having Shaw be the first living being, to ever show David compassion, or empathy, I think this would have a staggering effect upon David, one which he would hold onto until his dying breath, if he was capable of it. Imagine that he has been ignored and demeaned all his life, and made to feel like a lower class of being, then one day he falls over. Along comes a beautiful person who helps him to his feet;cleans his wounds, and takes care of him. (This sounds like Jesus and Mary Magdalene lol.) My point is, whatever is to happen in Covenant, David's number one priority, I believe, would be to protect Shaw at all costs. I do wonder if his growing adoration of Shaw, is a Maternal kind of love, or a real, deep profound love? Is he even capable of such a thing? I'm so happy after seeing this prologue, I really didn't want David to turn into some psychotic Dr Frankenstein. I can deal with him destroying every engineer in sight if it stems from some kind of pain deep within him, and nothing is as painful as a broken heart, which is shattering to us all, so for an artificial being to experience such profound emotions is much more likely to explain his actions, rather than from a cold intent to commit genocide.

David has met his creators, Shaw seeks to meet her creators, it was Shaw's mission to travel here. It was her dream to meet them. David feels gratitude for Shaw. And when Shaw meets them, they do something to her. To show his affection-gratitude for Shaw it seems unlikely that he would destroy them before Shaw made contact, or mutate her into something completely different to the person she was that rebuilt him. He is attached to her now that she rebuilt him, seems strange that he would destroy-mutate that thing which he loves, admittedly he already impregnated her with the goo but he was ambivalent to then, he was attached to Weyland then but now he feels for Shaw. They arrive, Shaw's dream is to meet them and she does and she is not well received. David lashes out in revenge and carpet bombs them rather any calculated experiment. It is the only realistic possible motivation he has to do such a thing. Unless of course he learnt something of them while she was asleep but that would still be a betrayal of Shaw's life mission. David loves Shaw and Shaw only dreamed of meeting them. You wouldn't destroy the dream of the person you loved, and you wouldn't turn the person you loved into an unfeeling monster. The same reason David didn't use the goo on Welyand but he did use it others. Shaw has taken the place of Weyland in David's heart. They hurt Shaw and David responds the way you would when someone hurts the one you love. You drop a overkill buttload of death of them. If it was just an experiment you wouldn't unload with everything you have and David pretty much empties the bomb bay on them. Total overkillnow that he is alone. It's retaliation for what happens to Shaw after she meets the reason for her lifes work.

Hal Jalikakik he and weyland had a father -son thing happening. David was special. In trailer Walter's are the mass production service types. But David was special. In the trailer he speaks about Shaw's compassion. Plus he is creative and can lie. The way he infected Shaw in prometheus was more than following programmed orders. And with weyland gone the companionship-attachment he had for his father-creator is transferred to shaw. He might even love her more than his father because its more a relationship of equals. Winona ryder character in ressureaction had faith (bible). And weyland made David special.a son who loved his father. Loneliness would be terrible for him and one of them had already killed his father. If they kill-hurt Shaw in the same way he would have good reason for genocide

It's silly to think an android can love. He was programmed by Weyland to do whatever to find answers. Some people believe David can love, but having watched the movie. He cannot. And if people believe he can, it's just his trickery in making people believe he is close or to have human characteristics. Maybe, but even if he does...he cannot love. If he can. He isn't an android.

Heavy spoilers here. I think something to keep in mind is that David, and androids in general in the Alien universe, are a complete anomaly. In a mythology that's about organic life engineering organic life, a deconstruction of creationist myths, and ultimately creatures that are bred to be the perfect self sustaining organisms; androids don't fit in. They're replicated puppets, that may on some level be able to achieve sentience...but they'll never fit into the the universe's overall scheme of organic life. They're imitated life. Why he does any of the things in the movie is worthy of debate, but I think a lot about David's contradictory nature can be looked at from the Xenomorphs themselves. They're perfect, efficient, self sustaining organic life...but taken to a vicious extreme that only the compassion devoid mind of an unstable machine that hardly even understands its own emotions can come up with. Maybe, he wanted to play god like both his creators and his creators creators...but because of his limitations as synthetic life, his interpretation of creating life is horrendously devoid of anything people associate with intelligent life. No civilization, no ambition, no family; all they're good at is living, at the cost of anything else.

I guess what David discovers about the Engineers is that in fact they are a race worse than humanity ready to destroy anything they don't like without mercy, and there is no way Shaw could reach an understanding with them and they will kill her on the spot, so he did it in-order to protect her from them knowing he could not persuade her not to make contact with them. Then she awakes and found what he did, so she crashes the ship and either dies in the process or hide herself somewhere OR it could be the Engineers who managed to crash the ship and Shaw dies in the process, but I doubt she died immediately regardless the way the ship crashes because of the take me home message she made that will ultimately become the beacon that will bring the covenant to this planet. It is possible that show mutated due to her original exposure to the goo or later when the planet become polluted by the goo.

While the engineers may be viewed as 'gods', if we actually met our 'gods', they'd probably let us down....just like humans let David down, and just like the engineers would let humans down. I mean imagine humans reaction if they went to meet their maker.....and their maker was a farmer in a field wearing poor mans clothes, who had no grand plan, and didn't even care to see you. To understand why David killed the engineers, one must understand who the engineers are, and we're actually told a lot more about the engineers than we realize. It's rather simple; the engineers are an advanced race, where technology is pervasive almost to the point of seeming like magic......chemicals with strange properties, floating ships, all seemingly constructed without any visible industry. But the engineers are long since stagnant. They don't have new ideas, new ways of doing things.....they are locked in their ways soo deeply that they can't see any other way to exist. They are likely what one could consider, a dying race. Both intellectually, and physically, as it doesn't seem like they rely on sexual reproduction, but likely rely on procreating through technology. Not exactly cloning, because it's clear the engineers are master of genetic manipulation, so they recombine DNA to procreate, with people being 'born' on conveyor belts as needed, with rules likely governing when and for what purpose, rather than blindly creating endless numbers as fast as they can. And a lot can stem from these simple concepts about engineers, about a stagnant society.....powerful but set in their ways, nothing would ever change about their society. But seeding other worlds offered a chance for new civilizations to develop new ways and new ideals, and perhaps if engineer society met them one day as their equals, engineer society would be forced to be changed in the face of meeting equals with different ways. The idea of this was an affront to the powers that be in engineer society, so that's why they wanted to wipe out humans. Now to the question as to why David wanted to kill them.....in essence, it was both a mercy killing, and possibly to save humanity. With as stagnant as their society likely was, and realizing they would never change, one could interpret them as husks, walking ghosts, remnants of a long since intellectually dead civilization. And they weren't quite as strong as we give them credit for despite all of their technology and achievement, they couldn't stop David and never saw it coming, killed just as easily as the military invading uncontacted tribes. In essence, engineers had regressed and the only difference between them and the Romans.....was technology that their ancestors invented. If you look at it from a different perspective, in some ways humans had already surpassed the engineers, or at least were better than they are in their current state of being.

You make a good point about being disappointed in one's creator. I think his choice of Shelley's poem speaks more to finding a fallen civilization. David says "I learned of their ways" while he is walking down a dark corridor flanked by sinister engineer space suits. In David's logical android "mind", a desire to kill off mankind simply overrules Shaw's wish to "get answers". David is not pleased to destroy. He is sad - which is only "human". But he has learned: It is destroy or BE DESTROYED!

It sounds as though you are humanizing David... suggesting he is capable of affection for Shaw. In thinking about why David takes actions he does I feel it important to think about what motivates David. I felt a couple poignant scenes to try to understand David in Prometheus include his recitation of a line from the movie he watched and, as you rightly point out, his response to Halloway about humanity. David seems more driven by curiosity and discovery than any moral imperative in my estimation. Evidence of that is his preoccupation with watching Shaw's dreams and his eerily mesmerized interest in the movie he "liked". Ultimately the dispassionate poisoning of Halloway leading to the subsequent pregnancy of Shaw was done to see what would happen...not out of spite or malice. Remember what he said about big things having small beginnings? Hardly a personal malevolent statement about a man that definitely insulted David. I felt David matter of factly marveled (briefly) at Shaw's resiliency when she floundered in following the horrific cesarean section she performed on herself... but did not express remorse or even a tacit guilt response. A big moment for me was when he discovered the star map and almost danced within the holographic display as he made the discovery. So did David evolve? Do you think that he somehow began to learn compassion, morality, and other "humanistic" concepts of right and wrong as he and Shaw traversed the distance to the engineer home world? If not the default to his curiosity and discovery character traits implies he simply released the canisters to see what would happen. That seems unlikely so my question remains. What happened between David & Shaw on their journey? Was he capable of learning gratitude? affection? empathy? If so perhaps he absorbed information archived on the ship about the engineer race and the potential factions within it. But more importantly I believe his actions must indicate a deep and meaningful interaction with Shaw. I can't wait to see it & find out.

While one cannot avoid the dialogue homage to Blade Runner I'm not certain you can say David = replicant. I am limiting my comments to the context provided in the story given. Should I expand the context to include, AI, Westworld, I Robot, 2001 Space Odyssey and the slew of movies that ever explored android / robot / AI? In exploring the question offered as to "why David killed the Engineers?" one needs to address motive. That begs some basic questions in which Mr. H. explored and, in my opinion, ascribed human emotion to explain David's actions. I am not opposed to a well thought out defense of that position as it's an interesting discussion. I simply pointed out some of his other actions that seem to suggest a curious nature embedded in a being that appears to act with a lack of morality. That does not mean I think he is acting in an evil way...he merely acts without regard to factoring in a moral position. Your comments don't seem to offer any response to the original question.

Imagine you're a filmaker, tasked with conveying important points, in just a couple of minutes. You have to focus on the bare minimum necessaties that expand the primary plot. The focuses of the prologue were heavily on David's newfound attachment to Shaw and the "learning of their ways", coupled with the ominous visual tone of the latter. David's eradication of the beings on the planet is 100% tied to his relationship with Shaw. He must also be aware that doing so renders the planet inhospitable to her, so he clearly planned on keeping her in hypersleep, or finding a way for her to survive. His tests post-crash seen in Covenant are a result of this relationship, for good or ill, and he will be the creator of Xenomorph. Ultimately our quest for technology kills us.

I think the key to David's motivation is Shaw's question "What if they are no better than us?" And David's response "So long as they are no worse" I think he found something that convinced him that they were worse and " not worthy" of Shaw's hopes. So he destroyed them. Them he either terraformed the planet into paradise or left it to naturally turn it into paradise as a gift to Shaw, like an obsessed stalker panting pictures of things the person he is obsessed with " would like". As for Shaw's happiness, David is a machine so he doesn't entirely understand human happiness. I'm guessing that he believes that so long as Shaw remains forever asleep, with the hope of awakening at a "happy ending" at the end of the journey then she is happy and safe. My guess is that he still has Shaw in stasis like a mosquito in amber
