I saw Alien on it's release back in '79 and it asked more questions than it answered, which was not a bad thing. The air of Cosmic Horror, the unknown and possibly the unknowable left an imprint in me and I'm still watching it over forty years later. I totally agree with you about Prometheus. A movie which belittled the Space Jockey was never going to find favour with me. I remember reading an interview with Ridley Scott when Alien was released where he said he didn't want the alien to resemble a man in a rubber suit. He, with Giger's design, certainly achieved success with that. Then, all those years later, the same Ridley Scott enthused how Prometheus would answer the mystery of the Space Jockey. And what did we get? A man in a rubber suit. I won't forgive Sir Ridley for that, not for a long time. I very much enjoyed your video and your style of narration. You got a sub 🙂

I've come to the conclusion that, for me, there are only 2 Alien films. Alien and Aliens. Both very different from each other. I initially liked Prometheus, but the ruination of the Alien Space Jockey being turned into a humanoid wearing a 'space suit' really annoyed me....Killed any mystery about the original ship and alien pilots. The original Space Jockey had a very sympathetic feel to it, as though it was a gentle creature.....Very unlike the musclebound humanoid in prometheus. Prometheus also reduced the awesome horror of the Alien itself. Turned it into a rather weak bio weapon.

You're not alone with your conclusions. While Ridley Scott directed both Alien and Prometheus, he wrote neither. Prometheus was written by Jon Spaihts and David Lindelof. They are the type of writers Alex Kurtsman likes to work with and the three have histories of re-writing legacy franchises and not for the better.

@@CineG That's good to know. Ridley gets the blame most of the time! I suppose he has to Ok the script, though.

Ridley is a great director and visionary... the problem is, are the script writers to some of his movies.. he is not a writer himself, which is a pity.. and he seems to have no control over the writing of any project.. only the studios.. saying that, I really do hope Ridley gets to finish his prequel trilogy..

Like the novelization suggests, I think that the ship was Grown rather than built.

Loved this! I have only made it through Alien-Aliens 3. I cannot believe how much I love (the original) Alien; I had no memory of how good it is. The films that followed were beginning to become a little “over the top”/graphic/gorey for me, but I love everything about the first Alien. First time I saw it was at our town’s drive-in theater, Summer of ‘79. I had just graduated from high school. Now, 42 years later, at age 60, I have watched it 4 times in the last month, including the Director’s Cut. Thanks again for the interesting video!

Def you need to continue with Alien Franchise. While there are many great scenes, the discovery of the derelict ship will always remain the favorite part of the movie. I don't remember any other picture containing something so alien, incomprehensible, mysterious, frightening, and disturbing. It's the definition of the fear of the unknown. The distortion in the image coming from astronauts' body cameras and dark, gloomy surroundings added to that uncertainty about everything you see. That exact moment when you think that you figured it all out, that you know enough to succeed in life, and there is so little room left for excitement from exploration of uncharted territories, or willingness to learn new things. The foreign spaceship appears to remind us how small a man is against eternity, and how little we know.

9:00 check out the expanded universe relating to how the space jockey was made in particular the animated series. After the living spacecraft sounded the containment breach alarm, the immobile and vulnerable space jockey attempted to fend off one of the most almighty face huggers ever appearing in the franchise. A monstrous thing, it looks like a combination of a king crab, and the most enormous spider you’ve ever seen, I think that’s what’s on his body, having been injured in its own attack by the jockeys powerful arms some of the acid leaked down and helped Melt and fuse the king facehugger into the space jockeys chair. On decomposition it creates this revolting hybrid you see in the original film. This king facehugger was created by the traitorous engineer class that wished to wipe out humans and through mutiny the pilot/space jockey. They used accelerant on one of the eggs during the flight to create this super aggressive, monstrous facehugger that stalks its prey. The hole in the floor is a direct result of the facehugger climbing the walls and spitting acid into the floor of the pilots chamber, gaining access from underneath.

I honestly didn't mind the lore of the space jockey being explored. I just thought the lore used was trash. He didn't have to be some sort of "ancient engineer." I visualized the Jockey being more Predator like.

My idea for an Alien5 movie is as follows: It takes place after alien4 and takes places on an earth in ruins. TheRipleyClone has transformed into an entity that is producing eggs, and a lot of humans are affected, and a war breaks out. They have to use a nuke on the swarms of xenomorphs and decidedes to travel to the planet where they think the xenomorphs orginate from. There they find there are multiple forms of xenomorphs. They manages to form a clone of a xenomorph that is able to communicate with them. And a peace is established. But as allways Weyland-Yutani has spies that want the xenomorph for their biological weapon program. And it is a surprice who the spy is. And that Weyland-Yutami has a lab on a spacestation not far from the xenomorph planet. Where they finds forms of xenomorphs that noone has seen before.

Very good. Alien is my favorite movie. To me, the space jockey was a victim, always has been. They never knew anything about the ability to create an Alien. They got contaminated from somewhere else, like we (the nostromo crew) will soon be too. The species of the Space Jockey we know nothing about. it should have stay mostly a mystery. Their technology though is suspiciously BioMechanical (the ship) so it is hard not to link the Alien to them specifically. if i speculate; The Space Jockey species were contaminated elsewhere, the alien 'evolve' with them taking the advance biomechanical DNA, and become the Alien we saw. it is a simple tale; An alien species have viruses like we do, we have contact with them, we catch the virus, we all die...except the strongest (Ripley). But again, their technology (the ship) is so biomechanical that they may in fact, be the creators of the original Alien (making prometheus sort of making sense in a bad way...) But the signal would never have existed if that was the case. The SJ would not have had the empathy necessary to warn any outsiders if they would have been the creators. Or maybe, the SJ was the only one 'contaminated' with morality?! it would be so ironic!... Espacially after Ash saying 'One that is not contaminated with morality...' lol wow, that would have been awesome...
