Alicia Keys DM'd me - Can You Do A Drawing In Three Days?

I was so close to burn out at the end of last year. The same day I decided to take a holiday was the day Alicia keys DM'd me asking if I could do a drawing for her in 3 days. It was one of the most stressful few days I've experienced but that pressure turned out the help the creative process in a huge way.

That's one way to look at it, but perhaps it leans a bit towards a victim mentality. Another way to look at it is that yes, the demands placed were high, but this provided Jono the opportunity to be tested in his abilities and become sharper because of it. Long term perhaps it wouldn't be healthy. What doesn't kill you makes you stronger!

Regardless of the opportunity this provided him if you were to compare his treatment in this scenario against other professionals of similar skill and expertise he is being taken advantage of. Imagine imposing these terms on a lawyer or a doctor. The fact that people just expect artists to bend over backwards and produce for opportunity or exposure is ridiculous. Maybe your perspective works for an amateur but he might as well be a master.

  • @martyaddther8597

@@Spynuffin I disagree. There is no necessity to compare him to a doctor or a lawyer. The offer was made, and he knew what he was getting himself into. He could say no if he desired. The moment he took up the challenge, which he knew was going to push his mind and spirit, he took all complaints off the table and used his energy to meet the demands. I didn't hear any complaints from him in the video, mind you. I did hear him say that it was something he knew was not sustainable. Sometimes a man must run a sprint to see what he is capable of.

Why all the unnecessary outrage? As an artist he accepted the challenge with no undertaking from her other than an appreciation of his art work and he responded because he felt flattered that a well known singer song writer got in touch with him. He said she acknowledged his work. He isn’t perturbed by it but the internet trolls cannot wait to find something or someone to be outraged about!

Yeah well I think whenever a person becomes a celebrity they can just ask and receive with no questions ask. In doing so they probably do not take into consideration of what others have to go through to complete their requests bc they can just throw money around and think it'll just solve the issue. Plus 99.99 percent of artists would not turn a celebrities request die. Like that, and they know it. In turn it gives them this idea that they can just ask ppl on a whim without a care of how the artists feels. All that for a shout out from her page isn't worth it. She should of said, "Can we colla, and I will come on your channel" that way her fans see it's more to it than some artist drew her. He is seen as the artist who did the work and it's better exposure. However she would probably want to get paid to do a collab which brings me to the point, celebs live in their own world, and they have a whole different set of morals they don't view other ppls value only theirs and it's bc they constantly get praised by everyone

But she didn't just ask and receive. She shared an idea that she had with him and asked him if he was up for the job. He was under no obligation to take it nor was he omplaining about it. In fact he seems very grateful for the opportunity to showcase his art to a newer group of people and to have challenged his creativity in ways that could have only happened under immense pressure, as he said. These kinds of last minute deals happen all the time when you've made it as an artist. Its a good sign I promise. As an actor, I've taken gigs 1-2 days before it's due to perform. It happens quite a lot especially in NYC. Lord knows they could've asked plenty others but hey, they gave me the opportunity and I'm grateful because it means they thought I could do it. So I've taken it. That also means learning a whole script and choreography in less than a day and performing with a cast of sometimes complete strangers I've never rehearsed with. But the point is, its a job, an opportunity to do what I love and to challenge myself while doing it. Its no different with Jono. The fact that he was able to do it proves the time frame was only a challenge and that he was capable.

PRESSURE is the key to editing with more precision, and pushing through the unnecessary noise we usually entertain during a typical creative process. I might die of suffering and the pain from physical and emotional exhaustion, but the revelation afterwards and realisation of how I trusted myself, and navigated the added pressure, tension, stress, and abuse (hehe), always leaves me with a higher and more personal satisfaction and achievement. A slower pace scares me more, as I am more likely to be bored multiple times along the way.

A major high-profile, world-renown client requesting a highly-detailed, photo-realistic, large format commission, all done by hand in days without notice and within minimal concept discussion is not an easy ask - no matter how talented you may be... especially when you know any thing less than perfect would be tossed and could negatively affect your reputation. This wasn't a simple sketch portrait or digital art that someone can run through Lightroom and remove layers, mistakes or use filters. FWIW, many major hits, albums and recordings have been written in minutes, recorded in one-take and had less than a day in a studio with little to no editing so it is very possible to do what I was using as an analogy - the point was to highlight how this wasn't exactly no-pressure commission and could have very easily failed..

Don't get me wrong, people are special but the unnecessary restrictions of the request shows complete lack of you and your work! I hope next time some other talent or big name gets excited about you! and your work! That you assess the requirements of your average and know you must do it within your own boundaries, giving time to your own standards. If everyone wants a piece of your action then you're worth waiting for !!!!! give them the realistic date for completion and leave it with them x

And did he get paid for 2 months of work? Or is "the exposure" the pay 😠

@@sledgehammer-productions I know what you mean. If you get more celebrity work from it, you know that it was worthwhile, but if you don’t get work from it, then it just leaves you feeling used. I have been in this boat and it’s not pretty.

Why do you pour water at the paper before starting to draw?

Just discovered you. WOW! You sir are a Beast! How many hours did you put into the actual drawing? I just finished a piece (pointillism) of/for a (well known) Late night TV Host and I have 15 hours in that. I know what it's like to be consumed by a piece.

Did you know ahead of time that there was other artists that were contacted ❓ It seems unfair that you didn't make the livestream.

This was great! But I have to admit, I'm so empathetic, I was nearly hyperventilating just listening to this story!!

Had you working for 3 days straight under pressure, to not even use the end-result in the final product, except for a shorts/story... That's rough 💯

This video is meant to be motivational but I am not motivated🤣 That voice at the back of my head cannot even help me agree it will take less than a week 2 months compression into 2 days. I would turn down most likely

It doesn't speak for Keys that she told you your artwork would be presented in a fantastic way on the huge stage and live, etc, but then not doing so. It seems like she was trying to bait you with that particular promise, knowing full well that it wasn't going to happen. Well-known people know they can get away with it, especially with artists who are ambitious and talented enough to know they belong at the top of their genre, but just haven't quite made it. So she definitely owes you. And you are very forgiving. 😉
