T Me That’s a great one too, they have a lot of material that’s really great that not a lot of people know about. I’ve been listening to Alice In Chains for years and I had actually never heard this song until a couple days ago. It always feels good to find hidden gems

What did his voice in was not heroin, but voice lessons that did not indicate a pitch limit to which he should shout. He attempted to go above that range that was safe to shout in, and it caused his whole voice to unravel because the muscles that create the chest voice sound cannot maintain that tone too high and too often. I have been to that breaking point personally while trying to sound like Layne, and it sucks. The more you use your chest voice, the more you need to counterbalance that with head voice and flageolet exercises. Failure to do so will cause you to sing flat at first, and later lose range. As awesome as Layne Staley sounded in 1990, it was just not sustainable, especially with all that throaty distortion. You can hear him coming back to his natural light tone in the Unplugged show. Belting is kind of an illusion- it sounds like raw yelling or screaming, but isn't. Instead, it is the production and amplification of very specific harmonics that make the voice sound shouty. Those harmonics are developed from the muscles that create falsetto and flageolet. Anyone who tells you otherwise, is *lying*.

@@into.the.wood.chipper. I’ve wondered for the longest (and theorized the drugs 1st, possibly poor technique 2nd, fatigue from touring 3rd) as to why he started to sound more strained as early as ‘92, most noticeably in the chorus to MITB. From ‘89 until about the end of ‘91, it sounded effortless and powerful, but that 92-‘93 period that followed rarely revealed the same force. I know he grew sick of that song, but I wonder too if he changed up the chorus around that same time span from growing bored with the song or to go easier on his vocal chords (or both?)

You said it!! That's what separates them from the other big 3 from Seattle. Pearl Jam, Soundgarden and Nirvana were so hipster, smug and would criticize other music genres. On the other hand, AiC would always recognize their love for glam metal bands like Kiss, Hanoi Rocks, Motley Crue, etc. These guys are awesome💗

I'm here to be controversial. New AIC > Old AIC. They improved musically and have better production and better lyricism since now both William and Jerry write songs and not only Jerry. And the stuff with William are atmospheric and enjoyable. The things with Lanye were great but it's just because his voice was good, not the songs themselves. Sickman and God smack for example are boring to listen to. But that just my opinion. I love Layne's voice more than the songs he sang. But in William era, both the vocals and songs are enjoyable.

Inez>Starr for me. Also love me some new AIC, Jerry/Layne/Inez/Sean is their best lineup tho. Love William and love the new lineup and black gives way to blue is an incredible album but their peak was definitely with Layne and always will be. Jerry has always been the genius of the band writing most of the songs tho and he’s still doing that today so I will always support him Sean and mike.

@@adecentdelinquent8986 I think the most notable decline musically in the new stuff is the drumming. It’s good and hits hard but is missing so much of that tribal flavor and creativity from the old era. But to me layne Staley was what made me absolutely love the band, and he is sorely missed in the new records as both Williams and Cantrell kind of sound similar when they harmonize

Sunshine was playing while I was away from the computer. I thought for sure it was William D, as it is obvious he uses Layne Staley's voice in his vocal mix. Imagine my surprise when I came back! ----but really, not all that much. William D has a lot to answer for. Jerry Cantrell said both he and Layne burried all of their master tapes/recordings at the dessert, in the sand, so far out and deep, no one would ever find them..

Wikipedia states the last time they performed this song with Layne Staley was on February 1st 1991 at the Off Ramp Cafe in Seattle Washington. Can they be wrong or is February 11th in the description wrong. Please comment if you know the answer. Thank you
