I thought this performance was UNBELIEVABLE. Layne practically ripping his vocal chords out for it and it's still better than most singers. I think his voice here ADDS to the song.

It’s an absolutely amazing performance despite his voice letting him down here and there. Very, very raw! Live at the Moore is sheer perfection, but this is something else.

They were a band of best friends and it really comes through the music. I often wonder what it would be like to present your bandmates with a lyric like "I want you to scrape me from the walls and go crazy, like you made me." It must be pretty tense. I write a lot of dark shit but I don't have the balls to show it to my bands. Thank God the band all worked to turn all of their issues and pain into the best music the world has ever heard. Maybe a hot take, but fuck it, they're my favorite band and I'll stick to my guns.

I don't understand people saying that this performance isn't good on Layne's part. It gives me shivers every time I watch it. I think in terms of "technique", there are other performances (MTV Unplugged '96) where his voice was more precise, but I love the beauty of how ugly this performance is. Not to mention Love Hate Love is an inherently haunting song in nature. His vocals relay so much fervor, raspiness and all. Just brilliant in my eyes.

Me too, it’s amazing, you can feel the tension in the band right before the climax of the song when they’re probs all wondering if he’s even gonna go for the high YEAAAHHS. And then he does, even tho he knew his voice was shot that night he still was trying his best for the audience and the band and himself

For sure...my chest aches when I hear these guys. Brings me home when I hear them then makes me feel homesick like it does a lot of others. Mike had been shooting up and overdosing...he was such a fantastic bass player. Layne was right behind him the addiction but he was still doing it and did it for years after. This wasn't the end for Layne quite yet. I miss these guys and Cornell...I search and try to find new musicians with Layne's power and talent for harmonies...haven't found one yet and it's been over 20 years of searching. Peace to those guys.

its funny everyone blaming heroin for his voice being as raw as it is when in fact they were nearing the end of that tour and god knows how many times he belted out that song among many other badass songs and just understand that even the most amazing vocalist start to lose there voice n need a break after awhile. dont get me wrong there is nothing good about heroin as iv experienced that very same pain but even when his voice was at its worse it will still send chills thru your spine. Exactly. And if youve ever heard him hit softer clearer notes, then you know hes MAKING his voice sound that way. He could make it smooth and cleaner and it would probably be alot easier on him. But thats not their sound. You see how much effort hes putting into it. His voice is shot.

Sometimes we don't understand what occurs prior to these gigs. I read Mike over dosed before this show. Yet there he is, playing live, just after a near death experience. I can't imagine that. The story behind this concert here in Brazil in '93 was catastrophic, Layne was really stoned, Jerry was busting his ass with the riffs 'cause he knew and felt that this was a big time event after the stress of getting his dad's tags stolen, Starr was at the end of his run and got Jerry pissed at his reckless behavior to the point of tossing him to the side of the road, a defining point for the band regardless.

I know this wasn't their best live version but the raw emotion and pain in Layne's voice justifies he was one of a kind. This show in general was so fucked up considering all bands got shitfaced be4 this! Including Nirvana. IMHO, I'm no expert but here we can see and appreciate how much of a great vocalist Layne was, being unable to hit those B-flat 4s to his fullest potential he uses the "Oh" vowel instead, making it sound, equally smooth and dark.

Maybe phil ensamlo was hanging out with him lol

Andrew Feltner his voice was a little off because he was bawling his eyes out right before the show started because he thought he lost his best friend, meaning Mike Starr. ..Layne shot Mike up for the first time and it nearly killed Mike. Layne had to throw him in a shower and kept punching him in the face and chest and thankfully it revived him. Layne hated himself for it and then bam...showtime! it's a wonder they even made it out on stage. btw I think his voice was just fine considering the circumstances that had happened minutes before the show.

Damn Right. Alot of little things affect the voice. Even dry air from travelling, lack of sleep, eating certain foods that cause acid reflux and so on. Could even be from extensive amount of consecutive shows. I did a cover of Man in The Box with my band a few months ago and my voice was feeling lower and weaker just from rehearsals days before the talent show, which caused us to drop a half step Eb to D Standard. On a good day, I can hit the notes in the correct tuning but that night felt weaker lol there will definitely be some bad days for every vocalist out there.

the crack and cigarettes, and huffing spray paint would've done much more damage to his vocals than shooting skag. i agree though, the road would've taken much more out of him that the 3 vices i just gave as examples. but as everyone knows, Layne loved all of them and would do all of them

You are always presented with a choice: you can either play it safe and pretend to feel the lyrics, or you can have them oozing out of every pore and your mind hurts from experiencing it all over again. The second one can make your throat sore afterward. Haven't seen a convincing in-between yet, so it seems that those are your two options. Problem is, real emotions project better than fake ones, so even the best and most earnest singers still hurt themselves even WITH training.

It's like a broken guitar string. The greats can still make it work, pull it off, AND Layne does. It makes it special :) *Hear the guy in the background saying "You're the BEST!!!"? Yep :)

I remember a very long time ago a friend of mine told me a story of a buddy of his that sometimes partied with the roadies of a bunch of bands in the early and mid nineties. and had a lot of good and alot of bad stories. But he told my friend that heroin was impossible to find in Brazil but cocaine was abundant. and while AIC was touring with nirvana both bands were constantly doing coke. Maybe crack I can’t remember. And chronic cocaine use causes throat and nose issues over time. Layne was a frequent user of both heroin and crack. 🤷‍♂️ but I’ve heard other stories that make sense too.
