@cart 55 obviously he could sing a song, the point is he can not sing it like Layne. He doesn't have anywhere the range Layne did. This is why it mattered so much to him to get Layne in his band because he knew he did not have the lead singer vocal range. He knew Layne had "it".

All of these people who say that Layne was 'the best singer of all time', are fans and largely speaking from ignorance. Like I say all the time, just because someone or a sports team is your favorite, that doesn't mean that they are the best. You said it correctly, Layne had a unique voice and it worked well with the band....and really well with Cantrell's vocals. But Jerry was the musician of that band.

@@michaelr.4878 He was a great singer not the best because the best singer doesn't exist. But he had a beautiful rich tone and a powerful middle range. I prefer Scott Weiland over him because he was more versatile than him but still Layne could had been as good or even better that Scott if he had the chance to live longer. He's voice is not overrated at all, he was a great vocalist.

No shame in the breaks, he was figuring out what he could do that night, and so later in the song he stopped trying to go for such high notes. Also he sounded like Cobain a bit due to the raspiness.

BlueBotMemes they are nothing but a softer metal band. Grunge is a music genre of simple riffs, a few chords and usually no solos. All of which Alice In Chains contridicts. There are many attributes to their music that prevent them as being labeled as grunge. Even Alice In Chains as a band agreed they weren’t grunge and were kind of annoyed they were being labeled as a grunge band, being that grunge at the time was very mainstream.

Funny how people notice and comment on the cracks and voice issues. The following artists have covered this song and only the first got through it without a break: Aaron Lewis, Corey Taylor, James Hetfield, Breaking Benjamin,, Sevendust. These are people that sing for aliving and they can't handle this song. The fact that Layne was having an "off night" and still sounded amazing is just a testament to his ability. Best singer of all time.
