Alice Faye embodied a certain ideal cherished by a large segment of American, and probably, international culture of her era. She represented everything positive, lovely, charming and classy but not overly sophisticated. She projected warmth, beauty, kindness, and grace. All the things one could ever want in a woman or a friend. I hope your connection to her has been a blessing to you, because our connection to her as a culture has been a blessing to us.

This was the 1985 Royal Variety Show in London for charity in the presence of HM Queen Elizabeth II. It’s to her that Alice Faye turns and bows her head at the end. The Queen met and thanked her and other cast members such as Dame Anna Neagle and (now Dame) Joan Collins on stage after the show.

Well she is performing, so has to appear well dressed. Yet I agree with you. I see women over 50 dress like they are going to do gardening or to the beach. I am 76 and take care of myself, though I am on a small SS income, no way I am going out looking less than neat and nicely dressed. I am also a professional singer, so I dress beautifully in inexpensive clothes and jewelry, but look good on stage.

My all-time favorite musical star. Got my crush on her when I saw her in 'That Night in Rio'. That was in 1941. I was about 12. Met her for a few minutes after being in the audience for her and Phil Harris' radio show at the Hollywood NBC studio 1948 /49. I notice in this clip she has lost her New York accent after living in Calif. most of her life. She says 'swear' instead of 'sweah' as she did in her films. If I recall correctly, she grew up in Hell's Kitchen.

I’m 61. I discovered her through her husband, Phil Harris, on old time radio Jack Benny shows. Phil was Jack’s band leader and his persona was being popular with the ladies. Then in real life he married Alice and you could tell she was the one. The gag now was that she supported him because of her success and also because Jack’s character was cheap. Wonderful art imitates life stuff.😘

Before Alice Faye came on the scene, most female movie singers had operatic voices. As such, movie producers weren't sure how audiences would re-act much less accept a more low-register female voice that almost sounded masculine at times. Well, obviously audiences loved her.

Every time I listen to her I am haunted by the mystery of how the hell she had no lasting record contract with any let alone major label at least while she was at her peak, when she in fact sent more of her film songs to the hit charts than any other singing actress in the history of film musicals. A Fox star to boot & so little material thought lost seems to ever come from Fox sessions or shoots. It's a sin. At least we have her radio work and some of it's in better shape sonically than a lot of record company masters from the same period. Thanks Buzz!
