Algebra 53 - Elementary Row Operations

Once a system of linear equations has been converted to augmented matrix form, that matrix can then be transformed using elementary row operations into a matrix which represents a simpler system of equations with the same solutions as the original system. This lecture introduces the three elementary row operations used to achieve this transformation.

    Wow this is amazing. Took me forever to find a decent video and here I am learning from a cartoon professor. The animation saves alot of time and easy to visualize unlike traditional board writings.

    You are correct that we could have written R1+(-3)R2. However R1-3R2 is a bit more concise.

    One example of a practical use of linear equations is to represent anything that changes at a constant rate. For example the position of something travelling at a constant speed. A system of linear equations could be used to represent a situation where two or more things are travelling at a constant speed and you want to find when they meet, as the example in "Algebra Chapter 35 - Systems of Linear Equations in Two Variables". There are many other real life examples of linear systems that you will encounter, especially if you study engineering or science.

    when using the scale operation, you choose to multiply 2 by R1, and -1/3 by R3, can you explain how, or why you choose these numbers?! Thank you

    Hi. How did you know you had to multiply the third row by negative one third?

  • @MyWhyU

    @MyWhyU

    7 жыл бұрын

    In the video, the third row was multiplied by negative one third as an example to show how the scale operation worked. There was no particular reason to choose the number negative one-third as the multiplier other than making it easy for the viewer to follow the math.

    This is the stuff that always throws me off...at 5:10, where does the 2 come from? The person that made the video just picked a "2" out of a hat and decided to use it? Or is it derived from the problem? Could they have picked ANY number? No videos ever explain where things like this come from so I never know.

  • @MyWhyU

    @MyWhyU

    7 жыл бұрын

    You are correct. The number "2" was just a random multiplier picked as an example to show how the "scale" operation works. Any number could have been used, but multiplying by "2" is easy for viewers to follow without having to think too much about the result, as opposed to say, multiplying by negative 17.
