Alford Gardner: 'I came to the UK on Windrush and I wouldn't change a thing'

Alford Gardner arrived in the UK on the Empire Windrush 70 years ago. One of the only ones left to tell the tale, he remembers a happy ship, dances and round-the-clock calypso. This is the 'beautiful life of a Jamaican living in Britain'

Nice happy story. When my parents came from Jamaica to London in 1960, they had only positive things to say about how welcoming people were back then from people that they didn't even know would invite them to there homes, same with co-workers. My Mother told me that she has so many invites that she had to turn down the invitations. The same stories when I speak to an 86 yrs old relative of mine.

I’m so glad people managed to keep their optimism and happiness, despite what certain people in this country did to them. This guy makes me proud to be British!

Lord Kitchener and Lord Beginner were calysonians from Trinidad and Tobago. They are no longer with us, they were quite prolific calysonians during their lifetime. Wonderful and happy that finally the Windrush generation are given their rightful place in British history, and that every 22nd June would now be a public holiday. It had to take the Windrush scandal to achieve this auspicious recognition. "Out of evil cometh good."
