As Caroline Kennedy stated a few years ago, at the Kennedy Center Honors, Barbra Streisand was receiving one of the 5 awards given to people in the arts, yearly and not solely Americans who've made a contribution, but any person who has tried, through acting, dance, song, from anywhere. From Lucille Ball to Zubin Mehta; Dame Julie Andrews to Gene Kelly. Leonard Bernstein to Luciano Pavarotti…etc. (Incidentally, the night the awards are given out and a huge, formal concert saluting the honorees, is taking place with week, shown on TV between Christmas and New Years, if interested.) Barbra has sung this song, from "West Side Story", written by former Kennedy Center Honorees, Bernstein and Sondheim, so many times as to make it one of her standards, which Ms. Kennedy points out…but also points out that it is an 'anthem of hope', a hope her father envisioned that the USA would one day be known for, not just in war or politics, but also for the Arts. This song is proof of that no matter who is singing it in whatever language. I have heard this song in almost every language and it never ages or loses its meaning. What it meant 55+ years ago, when it was first sung on opening night of 'West Side Story', it still means today, as sadly we've yet to achieve what the singers, (here, Alfie and Renee), through the lyrics of Stephen Sondheim, sing about. It is an amazing song, so moving, whether done by the 2 above or Barbra or The Pet Shop Boys, Supremes, and all who've covered the song, An 'anthem of hope' as Ms. Kennedy, who has every reason to be void of hope given the tragedies that have befallen her family, for a century, but still retains so much of it, points out. Beautiful and so appropriate for the Queen's Diamond Jubilee. God Bless the Queen and the UK. ~ Pax Omnes ~ Gary (Italian/American). PS…sorry that I do tend to go on, and on. I sidetrack easily.

The guy can sing but the woman instead should consider sing some opera no one understands.

See, this is why you should do your homework on people. Renee is an American opera star, who also loves (and sings) jazz, musicals, etc. Just like Alfie.

@@hecate235 The woman is a hopeless singer, not better than amateur karaoke level. Understandably she went for opera where it is enough with a big voice and no musicality is needed. And how many cares about "opera stars" 😀.

@@hecate235 Hey hecate 235 -- I have loved your comments about Alfie for years!.....You have such great insights. And of course Renee Fleming is a magnificently trained voice -- she recently triumphed in the MET presentation of The Hours. I'd love to get a DM or text from you someday. Take care.
