Alfa Giulietta - Recession-Proof Genius or Wallet Buster?

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Alfa Romeo Giulietta - is the Giulietta the perfect "cost of living" crisis car to buy right now? The most practical hatchback Alfa of the last 10 years is still a sharp looker, a snappy driver and super cheap to buy and run if you choose the right engine and spec. Whether you choose the JTDM, the Multiair or 1750 tbi Cloverleaf, the current economic crisis means that considering the Giulietta as your next car could be a smart move!

I have been running a QV for the last 5 years in Melbourne, Oz. 2011 still only on 60k miles. Competizione Red. It has been faultless, just properly services by an Alfa specialist. It is a perfect daily driver, comfortable but quick. I also run a 3.2v6 916 Spider and the 2 complement each other perfectly. 15 Alfas in total to date. I'm enjoying all of your Italian content, keep up the good work Chris.

A Giulietta is probably the best buy in most countries if you want a bit of an unique hatchback. Great consumption at 50+ mpg and easy to drive. Agree about the ride, it is very hard at the back. Put Bridgestone all round for mileage and very happy. @@TheAlfaNutHi Chris, It's a Giulietta Veloce, not a QV. 240 HP instead of 235 hp, and very small differences. About the fuel consumption about 10L/100 km, more or less, depending of the road and if you respect the speed limit. It could be 8L, or a little bit more than 10L . I don't know the consumption in gallons per mile.

Great videos Chris. Hi from Newcastle, Australia. I currently have a 2015 Giulietta 1.4 multi-air distinctive. It is my 3rd alfa. My very first car to own (in 1983) was a 1970 Giulia Super 1.6. I restored is and based on $$ is the one I wish I had kept. The second was a 1981 Alfasud 1.5 TI, After continuously chasing rust, swore I would never buy another Alfa. Along came age and the irrational love / hate relationship with Alfa Romeos. I decided to buy another one (hence the Giulietta). As it is bit of a garage queen, it has only just clicked over 50,000km with most of that racked up prior to me purchasing it. Indeed, it still has the new car smell. Lovely car to drive. Love the distinctive styling. It has been very reliable to date (with only scheduled services required). The biggest criticism however would be the interior build quality and the cheap plastics used throughout. Specifically in my case are the door cards. The lining has lifted from the backing in both front doors resulting in a baggy, saggy appearance. It is apparently a common problem I suggest it is the complex concave shape, the tension in the leatherette (??) and the stupid hot days that we have had recently in Australia resulting in failure of the foam between the lining and the backing substrate. I have just purchased some second hand ones, and now is all back to original. Other than that, no complaints. I love the car.

Hi Chris great video as always. Both me and my son owned 2016 Veloce Guilietta’s really liked the cars they look amazing and always make you feel special. But as always with Alfa there’s a kick in the bollocks. My sons car failed first head gasket issue cost 3.5k to fix. Then my car started showing the same signs great. The cars had only done 22k and 44k respectively. This is a known problem with the 1750 engine it changed to aluminium to save wight as the unit was used in the 4c. So both cars are now sold such a pity as I really miss mine. All I would say is buyer beware the specialist who carried out the work has now fixed at least twelve. Keep up the good work maybe you might convince me to go back to Alfa one day!! Regards Andrew

You guessed it, another Giulia! I wanted a Giulia QV of course, but for now the 2.0L petrol powered Q2 will do fine. The price was right, since there were quite a few 2023 models to clear from the dealerships in the LA area to make space for the 2024 models which I think will arrive soon. It´s very economical, it practialy makes the diesel it self. It also sounds good even for a diesel (nothing like a VAG diesel that sounds like a tractor). And when you drive it in Dynamic mode it´s pretty damn fast. And im glad you mentioned that it still has that bit of fairy dust that Alfas have, even thou its made as a practical hatchback. I would also say it have good leg room for passengers in the back, and the boot is very big for a hatchback. I agree re the ride - mine was bouncy but not long before i sold it swapped the springs for Eibachs then it became the car it should have been from tge factory. An effortless performer though, particularly in D, and other than a cracked EGR exchanger didnt put a foot wrong in over 60k miles 😊

I felt a similar way with the 156 I had years ago, which was written of when sideswiped by a lorry on the motorway. Anyway, I like the round gear knob. Alfas may not be the best cars, but they have something that most others don't and although I didn't aim to have a diesel, I'm really impressed with the low down torque and economy of the Alfa 150 HP engine that I have the same as yours and as it has low emissions and is EU 6 it is ULEZ compliant

Have had a 2013 1.4 multi air for 5 yrs. My only expense so far, after 50k miles, is soon to be 1.7K for a multi air unit incl’ labour. Occasional cut out problems that an Alfa dealer couldn’t identify. It’s commonly known, now, that the manufacturer did not specify that the multi air units filter needs periodic changes, hence the compression problem due to build up of oil - not happy!!

My 12 yr old Giulietta is still going strong, and has just clicked over 120k miles. It was bought in the middle of lockdown for £3600 cash, and it’s been stellar! The Gs are really nice cars, look fantastic, and the odd trim rattle aside, have really, really nice interiors. Great on long journeys, and pull really well (mine’s the 170bhp 2.0 diesel). I’d have another without hesitation. It’s not too expensive to run - I use a local Alfa specialist who is quite reasonable - and I won’t skimp on tyres or other consumables. I ignore the stop/start - I think it’s a complete waste of time! Personally I like the oversized gear knob - the change quality is very satisfying- however, the knob does have a tendency to come off in your hand (oo-er missus) - easily fixed with some double sided tape! Criticisms? The rear tailgate wiring, which feeds the rear lights and wiper has been repaired twice (second time with a new wiring harness), which is fiddly, the wheels kerb very easily, I agree on the scratchy interior plastics, some interior trim rattles get irritating, the rear bumper is very, very susceptible to scratches and nicks when loading / unloading things like mountain bikes, and the HVAC, if the fan blower fails, is a dashboard out job.

Try charging the battery fully and you will probably find that it start working again. The S/S system switches off when the battery volatge is below a certain amount of charge. If that doesn't work, you may need a new battery.

Mine is the 140 JTDM and it revs like a petrol, doesn't really clatter like old diesels and gives as much torque as the Rover V8 (290nm) yet returns 65 mpg and costs £35 a year for VED. Also only costs me £155 a year fully comp. If and when I get bored of the current torque I can have 350nm for about £150 - just a remap. I have the same engine in my Saab Vert and my sport wagon. Seats are still perfect and leather no signs of this age. Engine has still originel sprayers/atomizers and glowing plugs. Turbo is running perfect, it can hit 400.000 easy. Only problems it had: - navigation was out from 180.000 to 220.000, it helped itself - one window at the back i cannot close from driver position - gearbox failure because of to late changing dual mass flywheel - cupping of tires when not changing fore/after It drives in corners like a racer. I never think of to less power, my mercedes c with 170 ps are all usseles, better have 125 in the alfa.

I've got a '16 red 1.4 multiair TCT for almost a year now, and it goes just fine. For the tires, the dealer offered to install new Bridgestone Turanzas and I agreed since I've had that tire before. Nice economical tire with not much noise but not with much grip if you are "energetic" with your Giulietta. So, I can't recommend anything ftm. For fuel consumption, mine is tuned at 193hp and still consumes the same as without the tune at around 8,6l/100km, which is...let's say ok. I'm also impressed with the TCT, having a lot of experience from the previous selespeed/cambiocorsa/F1 systems and none from any double clutch system, this one feels to me like 100 years ahead. The fastest and smoothest box I've ever tried. In general this car is a nice way of combing relaxed everyday commute with some b road hunt on dynamic mode. And the diesels will be economical too.

I believe it is a great driving and affordable, dependable car. Not so much compared to how cheap were the 156/147 were, and even cheaper 145/6 and 155, but still a good value for money without needing to live with a boring VW products. Far from perfect, but no car is perfect really. Much better in almost every sense than a Golf 6 or even 7 with their crappy interiors, extremely slow steering, and depressing appearance. Too bad almost no one bought it. When it comes to tires, I also bought Michelin CC2 and they are good, but not softer than my old and bold summer Bridgestone, while being a bit squirmy. Maybe this is because they are new, let's se if they will get better. Before those I tried some cheap All Season tires, and those were so soft I could not recognise the car, however they squirmed so much that I sold them and bought the Michelins. I also have this 150 hp one, because I bought it used I could not choose the power as this was a very good example, which is a rarity in my country, most of the used cars were garbage. However, this 150hp one has 400nm of torque, it is so good in regular city driving and when on B roads. The only bad thing is that it dies after 3000 RPM, and this is really too early. I somewhat fixed it with the remap so now it has more power up there, however now it has more than 450 nm of torque it sometimes feels undrivable while in Dynamic mode and shifting from second to the first gear. It is a good car, more Fiat-feeling than the older 159, but still a good car and very reliable. As for the design, I never liked it, especially when I first saw it in washing machine white, however 10 years later and I started to see how wrong I was, the car looks much better than anything from that time, it even looks better than few modern cars.

@@TheAlfaNut Yes, I am from what is left of Yugoslavia. I am not sure what do you mean by character, this is really one of those things that we all see differently. I personally recognise it is an Alfa because of how it drives and feels, but different people prioritise different things so maybe for you the character comes from an engine and I will agree of course, none of those engines are special, especially this diesel. This diesel is not sporty although powerful, this is why many chose 170hp petrol, however that engine still does not sound good as boxer, or even Twin Spark, also the gear change that came with petrol engines was stiff and not pleasant at all, it does not have the weights this diesel gearbox has, this is where the click you mentioned comes from. The gearbox on diesels is magnificent. Then the steering, it is lifeless and disconnected although fast. In Dynamic mode it is too heavy, however not because of the natural resistance but it just has less assistance, so it is even more disconnected. In the end natural gives the best feeling but you can not use this while in dynamic unfortunately. I see how BMW watered down their cars over the years, this is what is needed to sell enough I believe. Look at Audi, people find Audi a sports car brand, to me it is a joke really, but it is what people today want, just a bit more power, few stripes here and there, some plastic add-ons, and fake exhaust pipes, few stickers, and that is it. They know nothing about what makes a car sporty or fun to drive. Giulietta was a mach easier car to live with compared to 145/6 and 147 for a regular human, but it is still too stiff and without fancy bells and whistles, two attributes that a regular, non enthusiast does not want in a car. I would say that they stayed with their ideology even more than they should in order to sell many cars, but I believe they sold so little because of many other things, this is very complex. I really think Giulietta was a better car than the Golf 6 and it still sold ten times as much. Sometimes you do many things right but you still fail, there is no logic in human behaviour unfortunately, we are not Vulkans. :) Sorry for the long reply...
