Thank you for the compliment! Do you have a layout? What scale and what country/time period do you collect? If I ever get space to build a layout it will be Great Britain in the 1980s, probably N scale.

The first layout had an Eddie Stobard lorry. I have two on one of my layouts, but, having been bullied by these "knights of the road", I changed the name to Eddie Stupid! People notice that "spelling mistake".

Ha ha! I remember a few years ago when Eddie Stobard were doing a big marketing push, trying to get the name everywhere. I'm not sure bullying was one of their strategies, but you never know.

@@ModelPaintWhatever M6 North, roadworks. 40 mph speed limit, nose to tail traffic at 6 mph. Eddie Stupid driver right up people rear, attempting to force his way through. Came up behind me, VERY close, and sounded his bullhorn. I just switched on my blues, he braked very hard, and pulled back. Then forced his way into the inside lane, right up the rear end of another vehicle, sounded his horn, they panicked, and went into the emergency lane. The hero of the roads then roared up behind a Land Rover towing a horse box, (I could see two horses inside it), sounded his bullhorn long and loud. He didn't give a damn about the fear he was instilling in the horses, nor the damage they could cause to themselves. I switched on my blues again, pulled up to his cab, and indicated right, moving across his front, forcing him to the hard shoulder. I sat there until the horses were away, switched off my blues and moved into the lane protecting the horse box. I despise townies.

I didn't go this year. But I am planning for next year. I can get there in just under 5 hours, using my Scooterpac Cabin Car. 15.8 miles is a long way at the maximum pavement speed of 4 mph!

Kudos to you for sticking to the speed limit! Many's the time I've had to dive out of the way of F1 wannabe scooter cars. I bet it would come in handy up that last hill to Ally Pally though!

@@ModelPaintWhatever I doubt you have seen a Cabin Car. Look up Scooterpac. I have the only one in 3 London Boroughs. Ambulance Yellow, with beacon on the roof. The road journey would be impossible, as it is limited to 8 mph. I miss the days of being crew on a real ambulance.

MODEL RAILWAY SHOW OR EXHIBITION OF CHILDISH TOYS ??? It's becoming quite apparent that the quality of layouts at even the larger "Model Railway Shows" in Britain are degenerating to the level of barely better than "Kiddy Toy train sets". No comprehension of Signalling on many layouts. No understanding of the numerous rules covering train formations, and the fact that LMS & GWR stock can't be coupled to LNER, SR & BR stock due to different couplings & gangway connections. And freight, not even a basic understanding of "fitted" & "unfitted" wagons & the order they have to be marshalled in. All of which is made far worse with all these ridiculous and totally unrealistic childish "Gimmick" accessories. Such as interior lighting that makes a lighthouse look dim. Absurd and totally unrealistic loco sound systems that sound nothing like the real thing because you cannot get the "Base" sound from one tiny little speaker, all of which becomes highly irritating within seconds. So if you want to see good layouts it seems only the specialist shows like "Scaleforum" have anything worth going to see !!!

Thanks for the tip about the Scaleforum. I'll see if I can get there this year. I think shows like Alexandra Palace are an important gateway to the hobby - there were a lot of families there, full of wide-eyed kids who are the future of the hobby. Some will grow up to make train sets, but a small subsection will grow up to be into the accuracy you describe. Personally I'm not keen on the Lego or Thomas the Tank Engine layouts, but the assorted children in the crowd LOVED them. The way I see it is, without this type of show aimed at beginners, there won't be an evolutionary path for the hardcore realists to follow. The hobby is a broad church. I agree about the sound systems, only a couple sounded anywhere near realistic, but with the lighting, at such a small scale they have to be unrealistically bright in order to see it, so I can cut them some slack on that. They can keep the "real" steam though. :) Thanks for your comment!
