Alexander Gerschenkron

Despite his vintage, the next generation of development economists will be mining him for a lot of fresh insights. He would have loved the fact that much of Africa moved straight to cell phones.

As Ben Selwyn effectivelyu demonstrates in his (2011) article : Trotsky, *Gerschenkron and the political economy of late capitalist development, Economy and Society*, 40:3, 421-450, Gerschenkron's classic essay and book fit well with the fuller and more sophisticated understandings of Marx's ideas that emerged from the translation of his *Economic and Political Manuscripts* and letters, in which he warned that while economies have their internal dynamics, they are human creations that are institutionalized and sustained within social structures rather than being overdetermined by the equivalent of natural laws. The crude invocation of "inevitable " and "fixed" stages was linked to Stalinism and its quasi-religious orthodoxies.
