He mentioned in the documentary that he would have moments of fear and panic, but he would train himself to dial it back and focus. I think he just trained his mind over and over to the point where his amygdala was desensitized. This happens with people who meditate for long periods of time. I think the reverse happens with people suffering with panic, anxiety or PTSD. Those people have hyperactive amygdala's. This makes me think that the mind can be trained one way or another. It's very interesting.

To dial back the fear and the panic is the only viable strategy. You’re climbing without rope or a partner, you make a mistake and they’ll find your body at the bottom of a sheer cliff. Panic is not a strategy.

Reading your comment 1 year after posting I'd like to point you to the video he made in June 2022 with Magnus Midtbø where he coaxed Magnus into free soloing with him (kzread.info/dash/bejne/da2tw5RsfbPVcaw.html). It's incredibly fascinating to see how Magnus, a highly experienced, world-class climber, struggles to overcome his fear and how Alex coaches him through the send. Alex' stream of commentary is what I imagine is happening in his own head while free soloing, coaching himself through the rough patches and scary moves. I am definitely with you in believing that the fear response can be trained - even without an amygdala functioning differently, like Alex's does.

Let's call the finger the part where there's the distal, intermediate, and proximal phalanges (ie the three parts of the finger; thumb has 2). There are the extrinsic and intrinsic interossei muscles as well as the lumbricals (can't make the Star Trek sign w/o the lumbricals!!!) All these muscles have attachment points within the phalanges only (ie not connected to the bones of the hand.)
