great topic, and my mind goes to Financial accountability, every currency spend or save have an effect on the economy, from personal level to global. more money larger the accountability, and the few is reliant on the compliant masses(formerly known as sheeple). so a large global mindset shift can steer the earth into a new direction.

I'm new to most all of the approaches to all the topics on this channel. I am trying to understand and learn. The one thought I keep having is no approach can work when you don't play by the rules and laws or don't care about your fellow man be it capitalism or communism or a hybrid of those or something altogether new. I've been watching to see how this would be handled.

There are root causes that transcend beyond economies or governments, whether capitalism/communism/feudalism/monarchies..All of those civilizations collapsed in horror..Because they were all built on the foundations of celebrating and rewarding greed, ego and violence..Those characteristics lead to the decisions and behaviors that destroy civilizations, and most of all, do not mix with any technologies what so ever..Because "externalities"(consequences) are not allowed to be considered..Because temporary and fictitious monetary surpluses would be exposed as such...

I'm told that a very small percentage of people have a very large percentage of the wealth. I've not yet heard of a system or plan that would change this by laws or rules or a new special system. Other than the heart being changed. So I'm left with an inclination to hope for the something that offers the most freedom and least governance. Kinda like picking a politician, which is the least worse of the bunch. I've been watching this channel looking for answers to my thoughts.

Fiat money is not created when the Fed "prints" new dollars. Thus the Fed printing dollars does not lead to inflation as many right wingers like to complain, whenever left wingers are forced to print money due to past right wing administration spending. Most fiat money is created by banks issuing loans to consumers and businesses. Each time a loan is given the majority of the money given to the borrower is created out of thin air by the banks. When the Fed "prints" money it is basically just covering a small percentage of the money the banks created over the last term. It has a factor in that is kinda emboldened ls the banks to lend even more money next term, but that is only a piece of the story for how banks choose the amount of loans they will authorize. Fed interest rates, consumer/corporate debt tolerance, loan regulations, asset investment growth rates and many other factors also affect the banks decision on how much new money to create through granting loans (which are largely unsecured from the banks side of the equation, hoping that only a small percentage of borrowers default). It is all a very fragile system requiring layers of balances, and if one goes down we are due for collapse.

It's a little bit chicken and egg scenario though. It's the u.s. oil companies who brought their expertise to other countries like Saudi in 1930s, Venezuela, Iraq, and made deals to give leaders in those countries part of the profits. Without the oil being extracted, there is no profit. U.s. agriculture is so advanced also, that most of our population can sit around watching Netflix and never risk starvation thanks to food stamps. Maybe the currency does have a privilege too, but those other items and winning WWII came first, making us rule the world. Yes every empire eventually falls, but not unless other oil companies and militaries fight us for Saudi etc. Of course we can price the oil in dollars if we want. Without our big oil companies expertise combined with our military protection, there is no oil.

The U.S. and other nations are smokescreens used to divide and control us. Behind the scenes, the real puppet masters are international corporations and bankers, including those big oil companies. They have no allegiance to any country or people. They pit us against each other to keep us fooled and in control. Also, U.S. agriculture (and all global Big Ag) depends on fossil fuels both to run machinery and as the basis for chemical fertilizers. Without that oil, the world population is way past the sustainable level.

So what's the price of that "expertise" ? The US has to feel entitled forever to exploit the world. Ok, how did it even create that advantage over others? And who depends on who actually? Do you remember when the oil supply was cut in the 70s? Wars happened afterwards, innocent people died and keep dying for the sake of sustaining the empire's life line, the level of debt is just ridiculous, it's like digging your own tomb.

Some time ago I read a book, I believe by a UN researcher fellow, which showed that the location of your birth and the wealth of your parents basically explained your eventual wealth (the research had been done on a global basis). I guess these random factors are now called "privilege???" I'm all for helping others, particularly given the abundance we've been blessed with, but "privilege" brings a lot of unnecessary baggage along with it. Maybe it's just a fad of the times and will soon see its demise under the weight of as its indiscriminate overuse. Here's hoping Nate will be one of the first to shun the silliness which this concept promotes. As for this bit... these ideas have been around for decades!! for more incisive stories around the abuse of the poor via "debt economics" see Confessions of an Economic Hitman, and books that followed from the same author. Of the set, "Confessions..." remains the best. Yes, the West seems to be embarking on a project to subject itself to the same pain it has inflicted on the rest of the planet for decades. Those closest to the redistribution machine are grifters, amassing as much as they can muster while claiming all is good, we'll just borrow and print more, see... it works!

How are we not privileged to be born and live in the U.S. where our currency is exported to other countries as a reserve currency? It allows us to live like kings relative to 90% of the world, even the poorest of us (poorest relative to other Americans). We all have running water, hot water, sewage service, cell phones, plenty of calories to eat daily, etc., all by no fault of our own. We got it by being born here, while much of the world languishes in poverty. I'd call that privilege. I don't know a more fitting word. Do you?

@@brushstroke3733 definition: privilege 1) A special advantage, immunity, permission, right, or benefit granted to or enjoyed by an individual, class, or caste. synonym: right. 2) Such an advantage, immunity, or right held as a prerogative of status or rank, and exercised to the exclusion or detriment of others. 3) The principle of granting and maintaining a special right or immunity. So while the random blessings conferred on those born in the right place to the right parents are enjoyed (as a privilege) the rest of the definition doesn't (necessarily) apply. That the West has been "lording over" the rest of the world... that's nothing new, not even worth noting as special "new knowledge"... the Global South / East / North has been noting this for decades if not centuries. I guess it's a good thing people wake up to the history of bloody malfeasance performed on "their behalf" to ensure their "privileges" remain. I just won't call that whole set up a "privilege!" Willful blindness to mechanisms that sustain the over-abundance, might be a better way to phrase that. Also... every country has its (relative) elites, and they generally maintain their abundance in a similar fashion. Generally the idea of self-flagellation with terms like "privilege" invokes the demand for equality instead of equity, righting the past wrongs by over-correcting.

@@vesc1389 Unlike most people, I try to be precise with my choice of words and not conflate meanings. I know that many people are very imprecise and think that you are mostly reacting to and responding to them. For me, when I use the word privilege, I mean the first definition - "a special advantage." I do NOT mean to imply any accompanying feelings of guilt or shame that are beyond the precise definition of privilege. For me, admitting privilege does not mean admitting guilt, it means being humble and not attributing my position to anything I did not do. It means not taking pride in my position because my position was handed to me just as everyone else's was handed to them. I didn't stack the deck, neither did you. We just got dealt fairly good hands relative to those born in extremely poor and dangerous places. I'm thankful and appreciative of being born in the U.S., but I also recognize my complicit guilt if I consume more than necessary and if I allow my government and fellow citizens to continue to take advantage of other peoples' virtual enslavement without at least calling their attention to it. I'm glad I'm not forced to work in a pit mine or smart phone factory and I try my best to minimize my own consumption that supports and encourages such inequalities. That doesn't mean I support policies to reverse our positions though. I support treating all humans as family, as our brothers and sisters, not as our enemies or servants or slaves. That does not mean surrendering to them and becoming their servants or slaves.

@@brushstroke3733 Think we're nearly on the same page. The rubber meets the road on defining some stuff though. Living in the West guarantees "complicit guilt" unless you live as a hermit in the forest. By that I mean your standard of living will not come down to the "global average" let alone below that level. There's also the case (tenuous one I know) to be made for... what happens if we all drop consumption to global averages? global depression would be guaranteed, disproportionately affecting the global poor. Next, please define "consume more than necessary." Not a betting person, but I'd wager your "necessary" would be considered luxurious living by many. Should you cut consumption even more? Probably not! All I'm saying is these notions which impute guilt are just that, a narrative of guilt making through shaming. Hence my aversion to the use of "privilege" precisely because it leads down this path. Your government is "neck deep in it" as some would say, for decades and decades. 99% of the West will denounce anything that jeopardizes their own "enslaved" living standards. Calling their attention to it will not change a thing, this has been going on for very long time... historical roots for all of this predates historical records. Just beware of quick fixes for any of this, more likely to be grifters after your "guilt ridden donations." Do your best to improve the lot of your fellow citizens directly, local or global.

  • @brushstroke3733

@@vesc1389 You're right, what I consider necessary would indeed by considered luxurious by the majority of the globe. My definition of necessary is fluid and flexible, and it is what anyone feels they require to be satisfied. It's perhaps not the standard definition of necsssary which might be that which is required to sustain life only. However, I don't require nearly as much to be satisfied as the majority of my fellow Americans. I don't even feel that cell phones are necessary, though they pretty much are, seeing as how many security functions depend on them. I don't feel that personal ownership of a motor vehicle is necessary. I don't feel that cooling a home below 80°F or warming a home above 58°F are necessary. These are just a few examples. Again, I agree that guilt and shame are counterproductive and do not help alleviate any problems for anyone. I am not sure I agree that reducing consumption would hurt the global poor though. I think it's possible that if they weren't busy producing tchotkies and trinkets and Mardi Gras beads for us they might have more laborers for farming and basic infrastructure, thus making food and basic standards of living less expensive. Also, it would likely mean that we first world nations would comsume less energy which might reduce the cost of energy all around, making it more affordable to those with less wealth. I guess we will have to just agree to disagree about this point since we're both speculating about this. Lastly, if definitions matter, are you sure you used equality and equity correctly at the end of your previous comment? It sounded to me like you had the definitions reversed. Equality means a level playing field for all, equal opportunity, equal standards. Equity means tilting the playing field and standards so that everyone gets equal outcomes. I think you and I want equality and do not want authoritarian powers or anyone else trying to create equity.

No. Paying for imports is not debt, it is an exchange. Business in exporting country A sells goods and services to business in importing country B for currency. Currency of country B is converted into currency of country A by the businesses financial institutions. The transaction is complete. Debt is not involved. What we have is an economic ideology that tells countries it is preferable to run a trade surplus (export more than you import). And we have a lack of understanding that global trade has to net to zero; that countries running persistent trade deficits have to create more money; that money will end up as foreign holdings; and that countries with weak currencies will naturally run trade surpluses. We have a free floating currency exchange system, yet few countries endorse policies that allow their currency to fluctuate according to the market. Hence the need for their central banks to hold a reserve currency so they can intervene and shore up their local currency. Reserve currencies are used to defend a country's trade balance, which isn't always possible. Then there are misguided policies like pegging one currency to another, using a different currency for imports versus domestic transactions, borrowing in a foreign currency, etc. Obtaining western economics credentials is seen as a privilege. Then these people return back home, and push policies that harm their country's short and long term future.
