Hi, i am considering to buy the recital one due to tight budget. But i read some reviews about it after some months of use, that some keys started to missing the sounds, and some are louder/quieter than others. I am now not sure whether to buy it or not

Thanks for the video. Although I really do like the Prestige as well and thinks it’s a great instrument I do feel you didn’t give the Artist the credits it deserves. And although it’s mentioned more than once in the replies already, I too would like to emphazise that the higher polyphony does make a big difference. Perhaps not for cirst beginners but as we improve and learn to play more complex pieces you will not suffer note drops. Also it’s rare to find it in this price category. Another interesting thing the Artist has is the ARP switch, and if one is to buy the better pedal with the presitige it will make the price difference with the Artist less because it’s included there. I think both are great instruments but for a little bit more money I’d definetly consider the Artist because it offers a lot more than the Prestige and not just a little bit as you implied.

I recently acquired a Yamaha PSR EW-310 and it is the bomb. 76 keys that are semi weighted; excellent for a synth. All the sounds are top notch quality especially the grand piano. I like to play with accompaniment such as drums and bass for that band sound when playing solo and this one has a ton of choices for that. I also need a huge variety of all the instruments I may want at the touch of a few buttons. This synth was just released with the sound board of a $6000 unit they put out a few years ago so for the price of $250 U.S. ($420 Canadian with exchange rate, shipping & taxes) I am very happy with it. The reviews on this unit blew everything else out of the water at this time. I also really like the fact that it is light enough to grab and go and that for a fast outdoor show, it can even run on some batteries with the built in speakers that sound great and are loud enough to get a small job done well.

I ran this prestige artist keyboard off a 9V battery. it works. If you want portable power, get something from an electronics hobby kit that accepts a 9V battery and outputs it to a male plug that fits into the power input of the keyboard. Or, additionally, build your own li-ion or li-po battery pack that you can use to power the keyboard. Get portable power.

I bought my Recital Grand a few months ago for $379 as an Amazon Prime Day deal. I liked it over the Yamaha P-45 because it has direct entry for the tones, and saves the Function + key entry for higher level controls. I was also looking at the Korg B2, but the Korg uses a proprietary plug for the pedals, while the Alesis uses a standard 1/4" plug. So far I love mine.

Nice review Jacques!! I thoroughly enjoyed it. Question though. If I'm a beginner, do I need to go all the way there with the great key feel? I have a Casio WK-200 keyboard (I got a long time ago) with "touch-sensitive" keys. I'm not sure what that means other than the harder I press, the louder the sound. It has a bazillion features most of which I'm sure I'll never use. Would it be better to get something different with better key feel and fewer features? Or should I just use what I have now and upgrade after I finish my lessons?

  • @PianoIn21Days

Hi Larry, I never require my students to get fully-weighted keys. It's just not necessary especially for new students. And even people who have been playing a long time can be happy with semi-weighted, including me! ;) The touch sensitivity you mentioned is different (corresponds with volume control,, as you mentioned). Unweighted keys feel very light and make the experience less authentic, but even semi-weighted as opposed to fully-weighted will make a huge difference. Fully-weighted is great but not absolutely essential. -Jacques

But, for me, is really important to get the better relation quality/price when I'll buy my first piano, assuming 88 keys piano, not keyboard. Well, I saw many comparations specially between japanese pianos (Yamaha P45, Roland FP10, Casio PS-X1100,...), but I recived a recomendation for one (I think) german brand. Could you make a comparative review including Thomann DP-26 or Thomann SP-320 vs P45, FP10, Alesis Prestige or so on, for entry level to piano beginner, please. I have a specific question. In an online comment, a buyer said there was a problem with the volume control on the Prestige. He said that it had only three levels, high, lower and lowest, he called it 1, 3 and 10. He claimed that keys sometimes played too loud for the volume level. The Prestige and the Prestige Artist appear to have a volume control knob which I assume provides either continuous gradations or a series of levels. Is there, in your experience, any substance to what this user said? My primary need is for an instrument with acoustic piano emulation. Bering able play around with other modes is just a side benefit. If I owned a house, I would acquire an acoustic piano and that would be it. The other model I am considering is the Casio PX S-1100. How do you rate the Casio for my purposes? Other people on KZread have done a hack job on it. My thought is, at the price point of these instruments, the manufacturers have done a pretty good job. $500 to $600 is not much money in today's world.

A year ago, I upgraded to a Yamaha PSR E363 from Amazon for $250 which has 61 keys and is touch sensitive. I love my Yamaha too. In my book, digital pianos are real pianos. They just work differently. The worst thing about not having an acoustic instrument is not feeling the wood vibrations when you first start playing, and perhaps, being distracted by the extras that come on keyboards and digital pianos if you're still very young. But you are still playing as an adult, so it's a success story. It's obvious that Jaques here, like many reviewers/teachers views a digital piano as a meagre substitute for a "real" piano. That's sad. Digital pianos rule at the lower end of the family piano market, outperforming acoustic pianos several times their price - just as pianos. But they have oodles of extras too, expanding the possibilities of keyboard playing beyond anything that our predecessors could have imagined. Enjoy your Yamaha!

Hi Mike, To the contrary, I'm very happy with sticking mostly (or right now as I currently don't have an acoustic in my home, fully) with digital pianos/keyboards. I even encourage many people to go with the non-acoustic route based on their needs and lifestyles. This video is meant to be helpful to people who are looking for a specific sort of thing, and I'm comparing it to a common and well-known other thing. It's a natural comparison, at least until somewhere down the road if the music community as a whole starts viewing keyboards and acoustic pianos as unrelated instruments. Which may happen. But for now, most people think of them as related, and therefore make comparisons. -Jacques

@@PianoIn21Days Thanks for replying Jaques. I take back my comment that your some sort of elitist. I agree that there are comparisons to be made, but that word "real" sounds so elitist and dated. Since as you say, you're a digital piano enthusiast, I'm sure that like me, you want DPs and the brilliant people who designed them to be respected. If we speak of acoustic pianos as "real" pianos, then that helps the elitists to present DPs as poor substitutes/facsimiles, not deserving of the name piano, and only suitable for squeezing in extra practice time, with headphones. That might have been fair 25 years ago, but not now. Do people say "real guitar" or "acoustic guitar"? To me, acoustic pianos and digital pianos are both real, so there's no need to use the word unless it's to distinguish them from VSTs, which of course are virtual. Keep making your nice videos!

Thank you for the review! It is very unfair to say that the keyboard categories you mention (unweighted, semi-weighted, and full weighted hammer action) are a reflection of quality (low-end vs. high-end). Those categories generally apply to "purpose" NOT quality. For each one of those categories there examples that vary from low-end to high-end based on manufacturer and price point (since you mentioned Roland, they have lower-priced digital pianos with plasticky-feeling keybeds and higher-priced options with wooden keys and super realistic weighted/hammer mechanisms). What I will offer here is that ultimately you get what you pay for and if you don't align the instrument with the player so that it properly "feels" and connects with the player, I guarantee the player will simply just give up after some time.

Luis, I agree with a lot of what you said about getting what you pay for and matching the instrument to the player, but I can think of two exceptions. There is a very big jump in price to an acoustic piano, and suffice to say, the cheapest ones don't suit good pianists at all, whereas digital pianos costing much less often do. Every now then a digital piano manufacturer offers substantially more playability for fewer bucks, as seems to be the case with Alesis. Sadly, the Prestige and Prestige Artist models still cost a lot more in Europe than in the US, so the Alesis value-for-money aspect here in Europe is not so evident. I hope that will change for the sake of my students and my friends.

An entertaining “unboxing”. The Canadian Amazon site does have the Prestige Grand, but I cannot locate the “Artist” variant to see what it claims you are getting for the extra money. I do recall when buying a Yamaha keyboard years ago (before 2009) that it was claimed to have “pressure and velocity-sensitive keys”, although reviews said that it didn’t have weighted keys. I’m guessing this was a simply a fancier type of switch that could sense velocity and pressure, but gave no feedback to the user. Oh yes, it’s definitely the soft “g” in “Prestige” if you’re pronouncing it as the originators (the French) intended, but alors, you Americans have a habit of appropriating foreign words then “adapting” them. Cairo (Ky-ro} becomes “Cay-ro”, Versailles {Ver-sigh) becomes “Ver-sails”. But then my country of birth, England, has a fine history of mangling words then using them to name pubs, so “plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose” as the French would say.

If you think the Americans are bad for mangling imported words, you haven't heard the Spanish people struggle with simple English and French words! One of the disadvantages of a regularity in pronounciation (as in the Spanish/Italian languages) is it makes you virtually incapable of comprehending foreign alphabets and irregularities. While the Brits are very cheeky with certain pronunciations, in reality they have less difficulty in pronouncing French words (for instance) than do the Spanish and Italians. But it does irritate me when I hear Americans say Los Vegas instead of Las Vegas. How can so many Americans get that wrong?

Great site and good review .... BUT, something that has always bothered me. Why make the light and easy, modern key actions to mimic the old fashioned, unavoidably, clumsy, heavy mechanical feel? I can imagine some reasons, but all based on just pretending its a grand piano. In reality I see more problems than advantages. Graded action - who wants to have to get used to every note requiring a different strength to press? Weighted keys - there may be an optimum amount of weight, for finger joint health, but that amount is not achieved by just copying the amount that unavoidably results from swinging heavy wooden hammers in traditional pianos. "Rebound" - this is what unavoidably happens from swinging wooden hammers. Do we need to re-produce this unavoidable "fault" of "real" pianos? In short, I imagine 98% of all keyboard players will never have a real piano, so what's the point of extra training for the body into its peculiar quirks - there is enough to learn without unnecessary extras. Surely the best action is that scientifically engineered to provide the ergonomically optimum amount for fingers, and that for producing (as simply as possible) the best sound. I would be glad to hear comments, or if there have been any real studies done to determine what is optimum, and the constraints on "real" piano actions that unavoidably make playing more difficult than it would otherwise need to be. Nevertheless, an excellent review. Keep up the good work Schaun

Thanks for your comments! I can't speak to all of your questions but I will say that a great many people want to be able to play between keyboard and piano seamlessly, i.e. see a public piano or one at their friend's home and play it without having to get used to an entirely different feel. That's one of most important reasons that I usually recommend at least semi-weighted keys, tied with the fact that completely unweighted keys feel very toy-like and just don't feel as connected when you play on them. Resistance is part of the physical feedback that makes playing enjoyable. -Jacques

This is a nice video. It's a bit long-winded, but the information is useful for newbies. We must have heard the word "real" used at least 20 times to remind us that the digital piano is something other than a bone-fide piano. In family homes all over the world digital pianos have become the favourite beginners' pianos, and they are also the favourite gigging pianos outside of the concert platform. They are also favoured in all of the smaller studios. Many pianists (myself included) no longer need an acoustic piano. So it's time we put the dismissive elitist expression "real piano" to rest.

Sorry brother. There's nothing professional about your review. You speak of a "KING" of digital keyboards. The Alesis Prestige Artist is a great contender. You did not comment/compare the built-in sound system. That is probably why Alesis made the above keyboard façade taller... duh. Most REAL players look for the scenarios like "live" vs "not-live". You should know, if your teaching, you NEED a sheet music/music book prop. Pro keyboards don't have them. That's a problem when you're teaching or recording. Thankfully, your reviewed keyboards do. Does the Inovus? We didn't get to know. How was the Inovus' velocity response or adjustability? You didn't say WHY someone would even want the (actual) disability of graded keys for live performance. There are sound engineers that HATE the limp, thin sound of the most incredible grand piano's high end "speakablility" and resort to compressors and equalization to get someone's performance to speak to an audience. Authenticity is one thing. Real world usability is another. THE most important feature of a sustain pedal is whether the polarity can be changed for different keyboards. Do either of the pedals in your review have that? Some of the most important lessons in "feel" I've ever learned are (miraculously enough) from MIDI recordings. My Casio has 127 steps times 127 steps for velocity. How does any of these keyboards you're reviewing handle MIDI? I could go on...

At a given price point, a manufacturer can only do so much. Consider that a simple starter for a car might cost $250 at a parts store. The manufacturers are making multi-mode digital pianos at the $500-$600 price point (if you know how to shop) that do a lot. You can't expect perfection at that kind of price. For another thing, the manufacturers have to meet the desires of the majority of the market. I don't think the majority of the market is looking for acoustic piano emulation ahead of anything else. Maybe I am, but a lot of people want to play rock and roll, jazz, blues, folk, not piano exercises. Maybe I do, but I know that I am the outlier. After doing days of research, I have come to the conclusion that there is no perfect choice. The Roland FP-10 might be a great entry-level choice for someone who wants piano emulation above all. But then they make it with the speakers pointing down. I understand the logic from an acoustical engineering point of view, but it undermines the utility and versatility of the instrument. Then I decided to stretch my prince range and look at the Yamaha P-125A. Now Yamaha has introduced a superseding model in the form of the P-225. When you look at a higher price point, you start encountering reviews by ever more exacting and opinionated piano snobs. The Alesis Prestige Artist looks like good but then I have seen negative reviews severely critizing certain features. I can get Prestige Artist for $500. But then I wonder how good it can really be given all of the criticism I have seen of other models in the same price range. It never stops.

This market is wide open to real players that have to meet the stresses of performance/sound/durability/service from the manufacturer? and on and on... I have sold... I have designed... I have critiqued... I have shove a couple of these off a roof. It all comes down to what's affordable and what sounds good every night. The best venue where I live has a garage for it's Baby Grand stage right. It lives there most often because most players today don't even have the chops to make it speak. That's a shame. But between that and messing your hands up before the rest of the tour, they'd rather play their soft-touch MIDIs. I don't blame them.

@@haroldwaynejackson7880 What I am shopping for is an entry-level digital instrument with good piano emulation. I studied piano some in the 1970s. I liked playing scales and exercises and I worked out of an instructional composition series called Mikrokosmos (Bartok). After some days of research I first focused on the Casio CDP S-160 and then on the Casio Privia PX S-1100. I dropped the CPD S-1600 as too rudimentary and now I am not sure PX S-1100 is good choice for my purposes. I have come across the Alesis Prestige Artist and also added the Yamaha P-125A to the list even though it is above my original price point. The Yamaha P-125 is a known quantity. As described, the Alesis Prestige Artist appears to be a good piano emulator. I looked up Alesis and found out that it is an American company which had long specialized in meeting the needs of performing and recording musicians. This is a good sign. My simple question is, what is your professional opinion of the Alesis Prestige Artist piano? I have some other background in music and I think it is possible that I will progress pretty rapidly. I don't want to buy something and then have to upgrade after a sort period of time.

@haroldwaynejackson7880 What I am shopping for is an entry-level digital instrument with good piano emulation. I studied piano some in the 1970s. I liked playing scales and exercises and I worked out of an instructional composition series called Mikrokosmos (Bartok). What I would like to know is what your professional opinion of the Alesis Prestige Artist is. After some days of research, I stretched my price range to include the Yamaha P-125A on my list. I have considered the Casio Privia PX S-1100. Now I am putting Korg and Kawai on my radar. I do not want a Roland even though the Roland piano emulation is very good. The appeal of Alesis is that it looks like a good piano emulator, but I have seen a lot of negative comments too. Any thoughts? Right now, the Yamaha P-125 looks like the can't-go-wrong option. I have other experience in music also, some that has worked out as far as it went and some that hasn't. I think it is possible that I could progress pretty fast on keyboard. I don't want to buy something that I will have to soon replace. My entry point is based on that consideration. You can learn and practice fingering on the cheapest keyboard, but once you progress, then what? I want full size keys and weighted and graded action above all. And reliability.

@@anonymike8280 Try the Casio PX-5S. I know it's complex, but the texture of the keytops and the force required to make voices speak fully works for me. You can always change the velocity response on several models. Changing the resonance response on the PX-5S impressed me.
