The 2021 Meltwater Champions Chess Tour Finals is a 10-player round-robin taking place from September 25 to October 4 on chess24, with World Champion Magnus Carlsen, World Cup winner Jan-Krzysztof Duda and Dutch no. 1 Anish Giri playing from a venue in Oslo. The players start with bonus points based on their performance over the $1.6 million tour so far and then play a match each day for a maximum of 3 points. The top scorer after 9 rounds wins $100,000 and is crowned the Meltwater Champions Chess Tour champion.
Each match features four rapid games with a time control of 15 minutes for all moves plus a 10-second increment added each move. The winner gets 3 points and the loser 0. If tied 2:2, then a blitz playoff is played, with two games where the players have 5 minutes and a 3-second increment. If still tied they play a single Armageddon game, where White has 5 minutes to Black’s 4, but a draw counts as a win for Black. The winner after a playoff gets 2 points, the loser 1. I am a noob but I am starting to think that generally trading multiple pieces for 1 of an equal value is not really that equal. IE, trading 2 minor pieces for a rook and pawn usually goes bad for whoever is loosing the two minor pieces. Obviously very dependent on the particular position but in general seems to be the case.

    I'm amazed that in blitz format Magnus could think quickly enough to calculate that he'd win a third piece. Clearly he did and Giri didn't.

  • @alexpotts6520

    @alexpotts6520

    Giri undoubtedly noticed it, but thought that his lead in development meant the position was good for him. Carlsen genius was to recognise that, as long as all the minor pieces were defending each other, it didn't matter how passive they were, white could never make any progress, while black could keep improving his pieces until he had a winnable endgame.

    Like all the other comments, this has got to be one of Magnus's most brilliant games. Anish is no slouch in GM tactical play and what a shock and sudden "WTF" moment he must have had when Carlsen went with NxB?! He must have known in his heart of hearts that the proverbial rat-trap door had just closed behind him...wow! Astonishing play is never lost on Magnus; to our delight. Bravo Magnus, BRAVO!

    Great game! The beauty of having a complete set, except the queen, is that 2 knights, 2 bishops and 2 rooks can all work together to cause some major damage. The bishops can block the king on the dark and light squares, and 2 knights working in tandem are monsters.

    This game was something else watching it live. Incredible foresight by Magnus especially playing the black pieces. I was even more impressed when he gave the interview and pointed out possible ways Giri could have won but that’s blitz for you. He saw it all. Also when Magnus walked away after this victory and Giri stayed sitting at his computer just comprehending what had just happened for a minute. Giri looked beyond defeated there.
