Hey guys, hope you enjoyed the info. Turns out Houdini Apprentice does not allow Alembic or FBX exports. Oh well, SideFX are clever :) This means those of you who does not have a licence are left with two options inside C4D and X-Particles. Option 1: Bake Geo, just use single polygon instead of sphere - loads will be less painful, final alembic should be quick with playback regardless the geometry, but depends on the sim. Colors would be more difficult. If you're after similar effect as in the video then just shader with noise projected in cubic mode should give similar-ish look. This type of baking is long and resource heavy process, unfortunately. Option 2: Create Thinking Particles group (Simulate - Thinking Particles - TP Settings), create TP Geometry from same menu and assign the group to it. Set X-Particles emitter to generate Thinking Particles and specify which TP group it should use. Bake TP Geometry to Alembic and you'll get particles. The rest is the same as in the video, apart from colors - they don't get transfered. You can create several emitters and groups to divide your colors and make it work like that. For example, if you emit from shader, you can divide it with inversion. Let's say you have black and white noise, and particles are emitted from white. This would be one TP group. The second TP group would be emitted from another emitter, same noise, but inverted. After alembic import you can scatter geo to different groups and assign different colors accordingly. Dodgy method, I don't like them both but hey, who knew Houdini wouldn't do it in Apprentice version :) Good luck peeps. Peace!

yea..won't let you export... I found out the hard way after a 3 day project - still loved the learning that came with it and going to buy a 2 year indie license as soon as I learn how to use Octane (day0 for me with it) Thanks man this is some serious high level workflow and you are, as always, very inspiring.

I’m just exporting obj sequence and importing it to blender. I wrote my own python script to import it as shapekeys and it’s most time working. Problem is when vertex number changes over time so it can’t be used that way. But in few days I’m starting my Houdini indie subscription so I don’t really care about that

Learned this much: It's a hell of a lot of extra work to render on farms, as opposed to locally. At least if one is using a plugin like xParticles. All that Houdini side trip was required merely to prep the file to send out for external render.

Finally some good and well structured explanation (like always), thanks a lot for that... something Otoy couldn't come up with for years. Process still looks like a pain in the ass, especially if you have to make changes (rebake all of the stuff). I don't get it why Otoy can't establish a system like drop&render or rebusfarm. Orbx is huge, takes ages to export, standalone is a nightmare coming from a plugin side. And: showing the cost calculator at the last step is classy Otoy. As much as I love the engine, I really hope they invest some money in UI and UX. The download workaround at the end gave me a double face palm... :D Edit: of course, encrypted files are a huge benefit, I give Otoy that. But then they should work on an automated and fast way of exporting it to orbx.

I'd recommend rendering the entire scene (everything except particles) on RNDR. But render particles separately on your desktop with individually optimized settings. Then compose particles with the main scene in post-production. On top of that, I'd do so even if RNDR would support the X-Particles engine. This approach is more flexible in terms of possible amends.

Seems like a lot of extra work when most other render engines allow you use the c4d file.

@@AndreyLebrov Usually they say they are encrypted, but who knows. I am so small time it isn't really a concern. I love the idea of RNDR but all the exporting/baking leads to increased headaches and more places for things to go wrong. Love your videos though!

@@AndreyLebrov Also, I don't think you mentioned it, but if you have a heavy file that uses a lot of VRAM is there a way to have it use cards without a certain amount of VRAM or Type of card? I have had projects that take a few minutes to render, however if the cards run out of VRAM render time sky rockets (I assume because of Out-of-Core). That really increases the costs/render-time.

@@AndreyLebrov we still can't and one negative about using octane scatter is that there would be no motion blur as scatter doesn't support motion blur

Andrey it's worst ! 2 titan rtx taking 14 minutes to render unbelievable I was thinking to buy just 1080ti for fast rendering, thanks I have not continued with octane, working now with redshift and soon will start practice in unreal engine 4 , I hope you watched unreal engine 5 trailer which incredible no poly metter now you can import high poly mesh from zbrush directly hahaha crazy :) let send you link let me know what do you think about it

Hey ) offline rendering will still be a thing for a while. As for Titans, I have no idea why everyone are buzzing about it, it’s not even stronger than 2080Ti 😄 I paid for memory, that’s all. And yeah my frames are taking a long time to render, but it’s important to remember that I have almost 30 GPUs to do the job, so I can crank whatever I want up :) if you planned to buy 1080tis - go for it. I’m still rocking a lot of those. UE btw does look cool )

@@twinsim there was a way to calculate energy cost and to render to earn tokens with one 2080 TI would cost 1200 USD a year, so that's important to keep in mind.
