What is the sin that leads to death"? The sin of unbelief and rejection of God's provision through his Son for eternal life". All the sins of the world have already been paid for by Christ on the cross ( 1 John 2:2 ) but one cannot be forgiven and saved if they have refused to believe and trust in Christ to be saved. If they have rejected The Lord Jesus, they have no hope and will die in their sins".

wait no this isnẗ true, Paul used to reject Jesus and killed his servants but then he repented from it. You can repent from that sin and become saved. And blasphemy of the Holy Spirit is the only sin that cannot be forgiven even if repented from.

@@servantofyhwh6064 Paul was called by Jesus but was never required to repent of his sins first in order to get saved. Show me scripture that says that Paul repented of his sins to get saved. Paul repented to the Lord by believing that he was who he said that he was and then was baptized according to Jewish tradition by Ananias a devout follower of the law. Blasphemy of the Holy Spirit is what the Pharisees did by saying that Jesus had a demon in him helping him to heal the sick and do his miracles and has nothing to do with us committing this blasphemy.

@@bereangirl7118 #1 you cannot be saved if you do not repent of the sin of not believing in Jesus, that's literally impossible since being saved in the first place comes from believing in Jesus. So Paul did repent from his unbelief. #2 blasphemy of Holy Spirit and rejection or unbelief in christ are two completely diff things. Literally in the verse prior to the Blasphemy of the Holy spirit Jesus says "whoever blasphemes me I will forgive". So again Paul had to repent from his unbelief in Jesus by believing in Jesus to get saved.

@@servantofyhwh6064 Repenting of unbelief in Jesus and turning to God for salvation is correct but repenting of sins to believe in Jesus is totally unscriptural. We are saved by grace through faith and not repenting of our sins . That would be adding works to the act of salvation. We admit that we are sinners in need of a savior but not repenting of our sins first in order to get saved. Wouldn't that be hindering the finished work of Christ on the cross and his accomplished work of complete forgiveness?

I have first hand revelation on this topic as the Spirit told me to quit praying for my sibling. I thought is was not the Spirit an opened prayer the next day with my brother on the top of my prayer list when all I hear from the Spirit is Jeremiah 7. Upon examination of this I see the following in Jeremiah 7:1-16 The word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord, saying, 2 “Stand in the gate of the Lord’s house, and proclaim there this word, and say, ‘Hear the word of the Lord, all you of Judah who enter in at these gates to worship the Lord!’ ” 3 Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: “Amend your ways and your doings, and I will cause you to dwell in this place. 4 Do not trust in these lying words, saying, ‘The temple of the Lord, the temple of the Lord, the temple of the Lord are these.’ 5 “For if you thoroughly amend your ways and your doings, if you thoroughly execute [a]judgment between a man and his neighbor, 6 if you do not oppress the stranger, the fatherless, and the widow, and do not shed innocent blood in this place, or walk after other gods to your hurt, 7 then I will cause you to dwell in this place, in the land that I gave to your fathers forever and ever. 8 “Behold, you trust in lying words that cannot profit. 9 Will you steal, murder, commit adultery, swear falsely, burn incense to Baal, and walk after other gods whom you do not know, 10 and then come and stand before Me in this house which is called by My name, and say, ‘We are delivered to do all these abominations’? 11 Has this house, which is called by My name, become a den of thieves in your eyes? Behold, I, even I, have seen it,” says the Lord. 12 “But go now to My place which was in Shiloh, where I set My name at the first, and see what I did to it because of the wickedness of My people Israel. 13 And now, because you have done all these works,” says the Lord, “and I spoke to you, rising up early and speaking, but you did not hear, and I called you, but you did not answer, 14 therefore I will do to the house which is called by My name, in which you trust, and to this place which I gave to you and your fathers, as I have done to Shiloh. 15 And I will cast you out of My sight, as I have cast out all your brethren-the whole posterity of Ephraim. 16 “Therefore do not pray for this people, nor lift up a cry or prayer for them, nor make intercession to Me; for I will not hear you. In the gospel Jesus did away with the law but Jesus commanded us to love him with all our heart mind an soul, likewise love thy brother as thyself. When we fail to walk in perfect love not confess our sin an repent, we commit the sin unto death! Jeremiah 7:16 tells us God hears not the intercessor or the prayers of abortionist, idolators an oppressors who repent not! I learned a lot from thos but still have questions. I just studied this book of 1st John last month (I'm going through 1 book for 1 month) and although I completely agree that the unpardonable sin is, as Jesus said, rejecting of the Holy Spirit, I am not fully convinced John was talking about that. From what I could tell (not claiming to be correct, just my analysis) is he was referring to physical death. I understand your point that all death had its origin in the original sin but lying will not kill you, contracting AIDS will for example. And there are certain sins that will shorten your physical life and literally kill you, while others, although still sin, wont have that direct consequence. So we dont pray that God heals someone who is suffering from a direct consequence of there action in rebellion of God. Is there a hint in the Greek that this is talking about the same thing Jesus was?

John was not referring to physical death but the only death that truly matters, eternal death. Both John and Jesus (Matthew 12) when speaking of blasphemy of God are easily understood when you look at Numbers 15:27-31. This scripture explains sin unto death, sin not unto death and blasphemy of God and defines them clearly. When you come to see this, many other scriptures begin to make a lot of sense: (1 Timothy 1:13; Romans 1:18; Hebrews 10:26-29) I hope this might help guide you in the right direction.

And you got to remember about the chastisement from God the Bible also talks about that so does Paul the apostle. • @missthunderstormable

i think this verse is about physical death. First of all it mentions "a brother or a sister...so it means they are Christians". So this is not dealing with eternal death. In 1 Corinthians 11,30 it says: "For anyone who eats and drinks without recognizing the body eats and drinks judgment on himself. 30That is why many among you are weak and sick, and a number of you have fallen asleep. 31Now if we judged ourselves properly, we would not come under judgment.…" In Corinthians when Paul speaks about a brother who sleeps with his stepmother, he is also calling for the destruction of his flesh. So if you do not judge yourself...it might lead to your physical death. I think this is about unrepentant Christian who continues to live in sin, their sin is leading them to death. They chose to live like that. It is pointless to pray for them. Nobody can pray for them to stop sinning, it is personal choice, they know it all. It s not as if they are unbelievers darkened in their understanding. They know and still they chose to live rebelliously. John is dealing with sinning and confessing your sins or choosing to stay in sin, throughout his whole epistle. I think such a Christian is a disgrace to God and to the Gospel and God will take them earlier.

@@codywilson5445 only God knows that, but I am positive that Christian, true Christian, can live like that and still get saved, because Christ died for all of our sins, past, future, present and who can tell what time limit is for the Christian to turn from living in sin. We cannot judge them, we are told not to associate with such a brother or a sister, because then it s like we are giving our seal of approval to their way of life. Salvation is eternal, it is a gift, it is not dependent on our doing or not doing or living or not living according to principles of the Christian life. Christians get sidetracked too and are rebellious, carnal, Paul is dealing with these things and admonishing in all of his epistles. No, it cant be, if it depends on how obedient we are, salvation is not a gift! If thinking just in human terms, human thinking, if your father gives u a gift, you can still misbehave, he will not take a gift he gave u, but he might punish you for disobeying. So I think, that s what God means when He talks about disciplining us. Now we can differ on what discipline is or what it means, but without calling into question our salvation. We are the CHILDREN OF GOD and belong to His family, we are sealed by the Spirit to the day of Redemption, we are born again, we are holy. I think everything is said in this sentence often quoted in Christian circles: you are not a sinner who sins, but a Saint who sins sometimes. Sin and life in sin is not our nature, it is not in our nature anymore. So, to answer the question, when I say only God knows, well Christian also knows, the one we are talking about, who lives in sin, only He knows how he feels in his fallen state, does it bother him or not, if he indeed is a Christian, his sin will be like a marble in his shoe, his conscience will hear the Spirit of God constantly and therefore it will lead to repentance, meaning a change. Now, it is possible that He dies in that state, and I do believe He is saved! Look at Hebrews, I keep reading Hebrews all the time these past 6 months, especially pay attention to Hebrews 10, 10: "And by that will, we have been made holy through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ ONCE AND FOR ALL . " ...." because by one sacrifice, He has made PERFECT FOREVER those who are BEING MADE HOLY". and many more verses in Hebrews 8 and 9 etc...and again 10, 2, talking about sacrifices in the OT, "for this reason, it can never, by the same sacrifices repeated endlessly year after year, make perfect those who draw near to worship. If it could, would they not have stopped being offered? For the worshipers would have been CLEANSED ONCE AND FOR ALL and would no longer have felt guilty for their sins." In Romans Paul talks about judicial act of God making us righteous, that is our situation before God. We have been proclaimed RIGHTEOUS, Christ took our sins and we are covered with His righteousness. It is a gift, because we believe on Him for our salvation. A lot of preachers are not preaching the true gospel, but performance based Gospel, such as John Macarthur and co. If they do not see it, you are not saved, basically that s what it amounts to.

I do NOT agree with brother Mohler that this is speaking about spiritual death and not physical death. The reason is we cannot see someone's spiritual death. The sin unto death is any sinning where the person dies in without repenting. Ananias and Sapphira are good examples. Also 1 Cor. 11:29, 30 is also another example. What the passage in 1John is saying is if we see someone sinning and they do not die pray for them to be saved. If we see someone sinning and they die in the sin do not pray for them. It is too late.

Brandon Brown, I understand where you are coming from as the church has been lied to and like most you believe the lie. I am not sure what you mean by one dimensional, but if you mean do I believe the scriptures, YES! No a Christian cannot backslide. The truth is there are a lot fewer Christians than the churches are claiming. The term backslide or backslidden is only used in the OT and it only applies to Israel and in every instance it is saying they are lost, not saved. It is saying that Israel has backslidden from being a believing people (nation) to an unbelieving people over several generations, not that they are saved and walking in sin. They are backslidden or to say lost. In fact as a people/nation they are still backslidden today. So NO believer can backslide using the term biblically according to the scripture. Sadly satan has promoted the false doctrine of a backslidden Christian on the church and most believe it and reject clear scripture. Also NO a Christian CANNOT spiritually die. Jesus said we would NEVER die and that is spiritually (John 11:26). As for Charles Templeton he was never a Christian, 1John 2:19. Lastly Hebrews is NOT speaking about sin unto death.

@john smith You don't think the "sin that leads" into death is the blasphemy of the Holy Spirit as was explained? So what do you propose? I'm sorry but your explanation of 1John makes no sense? "If we a someone sinning and they do not die pray for them to be saved" (Is this passage written to the saved or unsaved?) "If we see someone sinning and they die in the sin do not pray for them. it is too late." (well this is pretty obvious - but again, I would ask is talking to believers or non believers?). The main reason your opinion doesn't add up, is because "the wages of sin is death". And SIN, is not only what you do, but also what you don't do. And whatever you do that you know is wrong, to you it is SIN. In other words, if YOU CAN DIE AT ANY MOMENT BEING GUILTY OF SIN (KNOWN OR UNKNOWN). So how many people suddenly die suddenly??? This is why the blood of Christ and being BORN AGAIN is the only way. And if this is the only, than the only way to not be free of sin is TO NOT BE WASHED BY THE BLOOD OF THE LAMB.

Most pastors are scared to offend anyone, yet the word is very offensive an blessed is he who is not offended the scripture tells us! Shalom

No one knows? What happens to someone who rejects Christ? Hence, the gospel of glory!

The Church knows. The Catholic Church has had a consistent teaching related to this (on mortal and venial sin) from the very beginning. Just Google CCC(catechism of the Catholic Church) 1854 through 1864.

I appreciate the effort here but this sermon wore me out. I think more than 10 minutes on this subject is probably too much.

Mark commands us to LOVE the Lord with all your heart mind and soul and likewise love your brother as thyself. 1 JOHN 4 GOD IS LOVE AND WE MUST HAVE LOVE FOR ONE ANOTHER OR WE HAVE NO RELATIONSHIP WITH CHRIST. Therefore a righteous Democrat Believers are a true Oxymoron, likewise with the idolatorers and the narcissistic oppressors like King Saul a narcissistic oppressor. Luke 13:13 Without repentance we shall all perish. Jeremiah 7 defines the foolish five virgins who don't have there prayers heard of by God the abortionist idolatorers and the oppressors nor their intercessors prayers are not heard of by God for they never repented Jeremiah 7 stipulates. God is the same yesterday today and forever. Fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, Proverbs 9. I am a Eagle Prophet of the tribe of Simeon 144,000 future Governor of His Kingdom on Earth. … The incident with Esau is referring to his birthright not his salvation. Gen portrays Esau later as saved and Jacob sees the face of God in his brother. Sorry, not well done.

I being Pakistani Christian listing to the preachers with great care. This is in response to @maremma5. Preacher has done a good exegetical in referring to Esau according to Biblical text mentioned in Hebrews 12: 16-17 it is about Esau did not repented nothing it is said by preacher that he was saved or not saved. You cannot discredit the preacher with his handling the Scriptures in a right manner.
