My wife and I love visiting beautiful mountain villages, and Albarracín is hands down our favorite. First visit a number of years ago was a day visit and our second was a two-night stay just this past weekend. Highly recommend a leisurely stay as there is nothing better than an early morning stroll or sunset walk-around when the angle of the sun does its magic for your enjoyment, whether just looking in awe or photography is your thing. Simply amazing views to be had at every turn of an alley way. Also some excellent restaurants (we loved the tapas at La Taba) and for breakfast, Cafe Casino, the vistas of the town and hundreds of swifts zooming by the windows. For early evening drinks, recommend the atmospheric El Molino del Gato down a few steps by the bridge at the entrance into town, next to the tourist office. Many great hikes to be enjoyed within 30~45 mins in the Sierra de Albarracín. Incredible scenery in our drive-around the region through the tunnel under the town and on A-1502 & A-1703.

Agree totally. Visited the area in my second year in Spain and it is definitely spectacular! I really like all of Aragon. Lots to see but unfortunately people tend to go to Spain and flock to the big cities which in my opinion are overrated. The real Spain is in its smaller lesser known area which are full of history and beautiful nature. First year I visited Ronda and was blown away.... In the north of Bugos you get places like orbaneja del castillo and puentedey..very small but unbelievable places. Beautiful hidden gems all over Spain.

So many beautiful towns and villages in Spain. Many of them are little gems tucked away far from the maddening crowd. The trouble is if they become too remote and don't get visitors they depopulate and that spells doom. We don't like tourists but we need tourism. Lovely video. WT

Hi mannix, I agree and sincerely hope that they do. Let's face it, tourists coming to way out places like this are almost certainly the respectful ones. I've been to remote parts of Spain where the Spanish tourists are as unusual as the foreign ones and that is something I really enjoy. We should give credit to all of them.

I went twice and the second time I brought 2 friends. They were mind blown. Teruel City is worth a stroll . Came once from Valencia via Teruel and once from Barcelona . The Pinares around the town are so worth a walk from town. Don´t miss the "pinturas rupestres" . An unforgettable place.I call it "el ombligo del mundo" (belly button of the world).

I am from Morocco, my hometown is a village called Benirzin, when I searched for the origin of this name, I found that the Muslims who fled from this village in the video during the era of the Inquisition courts migrated to northern Morocco and established my village that I know today, which prompted me to have a kind of nostalgia to come here, I would also like to mention that they are very similar in terms of the nature of the place, a beautiful coincidence, greetings from Morocco

I agree, Albarracin es el pueblo mas bonito de Espana. We have seen most of Spain and still have not had the chance to see it. It's been on our list for years!

I agree Francisco. I had a few days in Trujillo last year and Guadalupe the year before that. I visited a lot of places but what I enjoyed most were the national parks and dehesas. A great deal of my pleasure in Spain is not just the destination (the cities, towns, etc) but the countryside and surprises in-between. WT

yes! the dehesa is just such an incredibly austere and beautiful landscape; and the towers and history of Caceres with its history of struggle between local noble families is fascinating! (similar to the Borgias and Medicis)

I wouldn't call Albarracín the most beautiful village of all but if readers of El País voted thus, so be it. That sort of thing is very subjective. Teruel itself is very interesting. I, like you, was in both places about 15 years ago. I remember Albarracín well since where we parked our car there was a cat trapped under the motor of the car next to us. I left a note in Spanish on the windscreen, "Hay un gato preso debajo de su motor". I wonder if the people got it out or even if it got free before they got to their car. In that case, what would they have thought about my note? I still worry about that even today. The region between Teruel and Morella, the Maestrazgo, is also very interesting. My favorite village name is Cantavieja, which is worth the visit. Looking forward to your vist to Albarracín and watch out for cats that love to climb under motors to escape the heat.

@@donnawoodford6641 Yes, I guess they do. But once in Guadalajara, Mexico, ages ago when Mexico was a great country to live in, a cat was trapped somewhere under my car as I was driving. I could hear the mewing and finally with a loud noise it jumped out, luckily not in the middle of traffic. Poor thing.

@@sallas5534 Yes, the name have arabic roots, arabic was a spoken language in the Iberian peninsula and we have a lot of words from the arabic language due to mozarabic people, who were christians living in muslim occupied areas and they brought a lot of vacabulary to the spanish language . But the actual village, the one you see is from the XVI century and muslims were out of Aragon around XII century, so no one single house of the village is arabic,

They are quite cheap but there is little work there, if you work online they are ideal, you can live for 550€/month

The place is beautiful and the views are spectacular but you spoiled the video with the music, something more relax would have been better.

Hey Stuart. Great stuff as always. Your videos are really helping me with my upcoming move to Gran Canaria. I was wondering if you would have any info on being self employed in Spain? The taxes, pension etc etc. Also the health system there. Should we pay for private health care when living there and if so how much is it? How much are doctor appointments? Is it easy to find an English speaking doctor? Not sure if you have info on that but thought I would ask anyway since all other info you have given has been fantastic. Thanks mate.

If you are working in Spain and paying taxes you can use the public health system. No aditional fees will be charged in that case. Medical attention is free.

Si se va a trasladar a España a vivir, mejor aprenda español y no necesitará un medico que hable ingles, Es lo mínimo que debe hacer por respeto al pais y sus gentes. If you are going to move to Spain to live, better learn Spanish and you will not need a doctor who speaks English. It is the least you should do out of respect for the country and its people Saludos

It may not be the right question, but... where do you think I should head? I will be emigrating to Spain with italian citizenship moderately soon, without a career (I plan to study there) so basically on jobs like waiter, retail etc. Which cities would you recomend I should consider to work? And if its too expensive, like madrid or barcelona (I would berenting a room tho), which city close enough would be worth it ( no more than an hour away). Thank you

Think very carefully my friend. Unemployment is high and the jobs you suggest are fiercely fought over by unskilled workers. Even if you found a job it will be extremely low paid. Don't even think about Madrid or Barcelona. I know many Italians consider Spain as a possibility but job opportunities are probably even worse than Italy. Speaking English is just the start. What other skills can you bring to the table? I wish you well, it's a great country if you can make a start but please don't underestimate the difficulty.

Hi Enrique, you should`nt take Albarracin for granted for this only video, it is a place in the middle of the mountains with a lot of green areas around, a river, some falls about 10km distance. There is a dry season, but I can assure you it is totally surounded of nature. There is a pine forest 3km from the town, where people come from all over the world to do boundering because of the particular rocks there are there. Take a look at "sierra de albarracín" that you will see more about it.

I love Ronda too but it's much bigger, more accessible and visited. Spare a thought for the towns that orbit Ronda. Grazalema is an absolute gem.

Albarracin in formal Arabic means the claws of the eagle 😁 i wouldn't be surprised it the village's name implemented during the Arabs rule . it just sounds very Arabized. in journalism it's used with the word poverty, example: good economic plan could get the third world out of " Barracin " of poverty 🙂

There are archaeological remains since early Neolithic, later we know thanks romans that there lived a keltian tribe called Lobetani and the city was called Lobetum. Later with Goths was called Santa María de Oriente -. After muslims ocupied the territory in XI century, the bereber dinasty of Banu Razin made an independent kingdom there and was called Al-Banu-Razin that means The son's of Razin city..during next century (XII) was conquered again by Christians. The serrany if you get the city by the contrary side you did, is spectacular.. And during Summer, nights are beautiful..

You just need to have an International driving permit. To get an IDP, contact the motor vehicle department of the country that issued your driver's license. You may need both your license and an IDP to rent a car.

Were those mountains burned by a fire? Looks too arid. The place would be so much better if there was more vegetation in my opinion.

I don't know. In the video, some trees can be seen. Anyway, there are dessert zones in Spain despite we have the largest forest mass in the EU after Sweden. It is a curious thing . In spite of what jtj says, that (the Sierra de Albarracín) is not really Southern Spain, it's Southern Aragon, which is kind of center-East within Spain. It's a bit of an arid place, but mountainous, and in a way, it's beautiful the way it is and it's quite interesting from the nature point of view if you want to watch birds as many hilly areas in Spain. You can find things as interesting in the area as forests of Spanish junipers ("sabinas" in Spanish), quite a unique species. There are some areas in Aragon that are even more arid, some even called actual deserts, like the desert of Monegros (which is actually further north). But if you travel even further north and aproach the Aragonese Pyrenees, things will get greener and lusher, so not all Aragon looks like this. Same if you go North west to the Cantabrian coast. Also as you head to Catalonia the landscape will still look Mediterranian, but a bit less arid than this. Southern Spain is not homogenous either, and though it's definitely not like the Cantabrian coast or Ireland anywhere and you won't see evergreen pastures, and some places there are extremely arid bordering on being deserts, especially in Almería, Murcia or Alicante provinces, it's not all just like a desert, and definitely not everything looks like this. In Andalusia you can find olive tree groves, mediterranean forests full of holm oaks in Sierra Morena, snowy mountains in Sierra Nevada, you can even find fir tree forests in Grazalema, and in Extremadura and around there are lots of dehesas. And though dehesas and Mediterranean forests in Southern Spain look extremely dry under the scorching sun in summer (apart from the trees), in spring (when this video was recorded, I guess) or autumn they are often green, not emerald green like in Asturias or Ireland but still green and beautiful, and full of flowers in spring. Actually there are few things more beautiful than an Extremaduran or Andalusian dehesa in spring (make a google image search of "dehesa en primavera" and you'll see). Unlike what some people think, south=arid and north=green is an oversimplification concerning Spain that doesn't always apply. Though all the Cantabrian coast is green and lush, the deserts of las Bárdenas or Monegros are still in Northern Iberia. While the Sierra de Grazalema is one of the rainiest points in Spain, it's quite green and it's in the South. But still, arid places in Spain are not ugly, and they're often also interesting concerning its nature, with a great biodiversity of their own. Spain is really diverse in spite of not being that big in size and that applies to nature too, which is a part of its greatness, there are few European countries so diverse concerning its nature and landscapes.
