I'm somewhat curious about the boats. If i'm not mistaken they had a steam plant providing propulsion which is something pretty rare for a commercial vessel that small. How were they operational-wise? They look like really seaworthy ships but with that plant possibly a little labor intensive.

The footage shows them hunting Sperm whales which have the dubious honor of being the most hunted whale species. I have a study from 1980 which predicted that the Sperm whale was going to be extinct by 1990, so it's nothing short of a miracle that they're still around today.

@@mandibleclaw56 sorry about the spelling, but my point is that most of the human population forget ,or don't know where the meat on their plate comes from,if you,and I suspect not, ever worked in an intensive meat farm....you would realise how cruel and in human we still are to this day,so wake up and stop distinguishing between animals that look amazing,to animals that just live for our greed

I wonder what you bleeding hearts think when you order steak, lamb, pork ,chicken and every animal that is used as food. Poor cows, sheep and bloody chooks. Did a year with Reijo Simojoki on Cheynes 3 when I was a deck boy. Exciting life for a 16 year old and good money.Thats what life is about, earning a quid!!

Yeh totally different when I eat sheep pork beef etc it's farmed and grown for that purpose we don't farm whales and can't breed them as a liable food source or for oil killing them would only hunt the population out I don't know where you obtain your meat from but I'll have you know its farmed in mass proportions year round and grown for human consumption

Comparing slaughtering whales in mass proportions till there on the brink of extinction is viable oh are cows sheep pigs ducks chook etc going too go extinct because we've been slaughtering and breeding them for years😂😂😂😂😂😂

Quite ironic that Cheynes made food for farm animals from the whales. I spent a day at the whaling station last year, absolutely fascinating place and expertly curated.
